Athletic Directors in ’s Public and Private Secondary Schools

Sponsored by Athletic World Advertising and Crown Trophy Fall 2007 www.msada-md.org President’s Message

The busy summer started with the MSADA hosting the Section 2 meeting in Laurel and Annapolis for the fifty delegates and representatives from the NIAAA. Delegates got a chance to tour the University of Maryland and it’s the athletic facilities while spending time with athletic director Debbie Yow, head women’s coach Brenda Frese and head football coach Ralph Friedgen. The following day allowed the delegates the opportunity to either play in the morning or take a tour of our state capital and U.S. Naval Academy. In the afternoon, the featured activity was a boat cruise on the Chesapeake Bay and a traditional crab feast for dinner. It was entertaining to watch the delegates from Kentucky use a ‘Hammer” as they tried to eat crabs for the first time.

The hard work of the Executive Council and officers in planning this huge endeavor Karl Heimbach, CMAA provided a great experience for all the visiting delegates and I would like to thank everyone who helped in making sure this meeting was a success. I believe we set the bar “high” for future states who will be hosting this meeting in the future. Again, I just want to say “Well done” to everyone who helped in pulling off one of the best run and organized section meetings that has ever been hosted.

It was a pleasure to attend the Turf and Equipment Seminar hosted at and athletic director Ron Lane. Turf Equipment and Supply Company, Inc. of Jessup, Maryland presented incite into grass growing, irrigation systems, equipment, financing and countless other practical ideas needed by athletic directors to have safe and attractive playing fields for their teams. This presentation was one of the most professionally done seminars I have ever attended and the willingness of a major company like Toro to provide such great resources for athletic directors and schools speaks volumes about this great company. For all those who attended, we walked away with a better understanding on what must be done each season to improve the quality of our athletic fields as we continue to play more athletic contests on our limited field space.

As we enter the 2007-08 school year, I encourage you to not only join the MSADA but the NIAAA as well. Hopefully, you’ll take advantage of the “dual membership” that is currently being offered and also take advantage of the MSADA school In This Issue membership for your principal and assistant athletic directors. Being part of both organizations is an important step in improving your professionalism and Page 2 development as an athletic administrator. It is never too early to start planning MSADA/NIAAA/NFHS Awards to attend the national conference on December 14-17 in Nashville and the state conference in Ocean City on April 11-13. In closing, I wish each of you a successful school year and I hope you continue Page 7 to contact your district representatives and officers with ideas for seminars, Finding a Replacement Coach workshops, LTC classes and other activities that you feel will help you to do at the Last Minute your job. Another major question is how much time and money can you afford to spend maintaining the field? This is very important for those of you who are not at your school daily throughout the summer. Bermuda grass must be cut 3 times a week throughout the summer and will require a reel-type mower. These factors, as well as many others, must be considered before you make a commitment to a grass type that will be in use for the next 10-15 years. Be assured that there is a ‘best choice’ for your facility, but again, it may not be the same selection as your neighboring schools.

The one major advantage in selecting a turf type is that you have the resources of the MSADA. If you are looking at installing a field, call someone who has that exact type of field already. With an association this large, the odds are that if you are considering it, someone else has already installed it. Use that resource, call them and get their opinion and their likes/dislikes of the field. More Crabs, Please! The MSADA also has great vendor partners in this area, each who are experts in their particular field. Beyond the MSADA, the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) can also be a great resource for information from both the national level as well as through members of the local Chesapeake Chapter. I am sure every member of the MSADA or STMA will enjoy talking about how to provide the best and safest fields for your student athletes! Bring on the Crabs! ○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○

The Maryland State Coaches Association Update

The MSCA is starting its 7th year of service to the State of Maryland and, with its dual membership with the NFHS Coaches Association, it offers the best deal in the nation.
