A by-law of The Corporation of the City of Ottawa to designate 75-77 to be of historic or architectural value or interest;

WHEREAS The Ontario Heritage Act, I974, authorj-zes the Council of a municipality to enact by-laws to €epignate

l ..: real property, including all the buildings and strucftures I thereon, to be of historic or architectural value orf int"test; I lAt AND WHEREAS the Council of The Corporatied of the City of Ottawa has caused to be served upon the owner of the lands and premises known as 75-77 ltlicholas Street, more partic- ularly described in Schedule ''A'r hereto, and upon the Ontario Heritage Foundation, notice of intention to so designate the aforesaid real property and has caused such notice of intention to be published in The Ottawa Citizen newspaper having a general circulation in the City of Ottawa, once a week for three consecu- tive weeks, namely on September 26th, October 3rd and October 10th, 1978i

AND WHEREAS the reasons for the designation are set out as Schedule rfB' hereto;

AND WHEREAS no notice of objection to the said proposed designation has been served upon the Clerk of the municipality;

TI{EREFORE the Council of The Corporation of the City of Ottawa enacts as follows:-

1. There is designated as being of historic or architec- tural value or interest the real property, more particularly described in Schedule 'fA, hereto, known as 75-77 Nicholas Street.

2. The City Solicitor j-s hereby authorized to cause a copy of this by-law to be registered against the property described in Schedule t'A" hereto in the proper Land Registry Office.

The City Clerk is hereby authorized to cause a coPy of this by-law to be served upon the owner of the property described in Schedule "A", and upon the Ontario Heritage Foundation, and to cause notice of this by-law to be published in a newspaper having a general circulation in the City of Ottawa.

The scheduLes attached hereto and marked Schedule and Schedule rtBrr form part of this by-law and all notations, references and bther information contained therein shall be as much a part of this by-Iaw as if all the matters and information set forth by the said schedules were all fully described herein.

ALL AND SINGULAR that certain parcel or tract of land and premises, situate, lying and being in the City of Ottawa, formerly in the Township of Nepean, in the Regional Municipality of Ot.tawa-Carleton, in the Province of Ontario, and BEING COMPOSED OF Part of Albert Street, according to a plan registered in the Registry Office for the Registry Division of the City of Ottawa as Number 3922, and Part of the Court House and Jail Block, in Lot "C", Concession nC' of the said Township of Nepean, shovrn on the said Plan ltrumber 3922, the boundaries of the said parcel being described as follows: PREMISING that the Lrearings are astronomic, derived from the south-easterly limit of Daly Avenue having a bearing of north flfty-seven degrees, fifty-nine minutes, twenty second's east (N 5'1" 59r 20" E) as shown on a plan of the integrated control network of the National Capital Region and are referred to longitude seventy-six degrees, thirty minutes west (75" 30' W) and relating all bearings herein thereto;

,,The carleton county Jail , 75-77 Nicholas Street, j-s recommended for designation as being of historical and' architectural value. Erected during 1960-62 to the design of H. H. Horsey, it followed standard patterns for such structures- Constructed of stone, it is a solid, austere building. The front portion contains the governor's quarters, with a pleasant' Iiving room and fireplace. The main block to the rear consists of four floors of narrow, unlit cells with massive stone waLls and a hanging chamber at the eastern end. The last public execution in took place here in 1869. STATEI4ENT OT REASONS FOR THE DESTGNATION: "The Carleton County Jail, 75-77 Nicholas Street, is recommended for designation as being of historical and architectural value.
