In retrospect 2012 still feels like a busy year at Hoyt. With a new database, signage and two Earned and contributed income led to increased revenue of $194,723 or 135% over 2011. This was accomplished significant new plantings there was a lot going on. through increased individual and corporate contributions, foundation grants, rental income, retail sales and gain on investments. The year itself was an interesting one with a cool wet spring and two late-season snow events followed by one of the longest dry summers in a great may years. We lost some magnolias in Year-end appeal donations grew by 25% in 2011 and an additional 7% in 2012. Membership has nearly quadrupled the March snow as the snow was wet and very heavy; I clearly remember walking through the from 208 to 802 in the last two years, and the number of corporate and foundation gifts grew from 14 to 45. But opportunity comes as well, and next spring we will be adding new trees to replace those lost. With the long hot summer I was con- cerned all of the leaves would fall from the trees due to stress prior to the Fall Color Tour, but the rain made a predictable comeback and we had a splendid display of color to enjoy our Fall Color Tour. Alpine plant area in the new courtyard rock garden We installed two new collections, including a redesign of the Visitor Center courtyard beds due to a generous donation from the Joyce M. Furman Memorial Trust. This redesign includes a new alpine plant area in a crevice-style rock garden. The plants are all alpine species from the Cascade, Wallowa and Siskiyou mountain ranges.

The second collection found along the Overlook Trail is a collaboration with Oregon State Uni- versity’s nursery breeding program in the form of a Cotoneaster collection, supported by a

grant from the J. Frank Schmidt Foundation. Sixty-seven species of cotoneaster planted in a Contributed Income: 77% taxonomic layout reflect the sections and sub genera within the large genus. We will be moni- Earned Income: 23% toring the planting for horticultural value, potential invasiveness and unfortunate traits of some species in this genus.

Lastly, and perhaps the biggest project last year, was the purchase of IRIS BG database in collaboration with Leach Botanical Garden, Hoyt Arboretum Friends and Portland Parks and Recreation. This new database has enabled us for the first time to make the database acces- sible to the general public through the Hoyt Arboretum website. Visitors can look up the loca- Cotoneaster planting tion of the tree they wish to see and find its location along the trail on a map. Additional infor- mation and photos of the plants are also available. For staff, the database has been easy to learn and use and is much more powerful at storing data than we were previously able to record.

In 2012 additions outweighed removals with 133 plantings and 67 removals. The removals were all dead trees or plants in the nursery. Programs: 59% As always I would like to thank all of the volunteers and donors who supported the collections work.

Each year since then,  Aristotelia chilensis the numbers of people involved and the breadth of programming has  Magnolia salicifolia increased, and 2012 was no exception. Environmental Education (EE)  Magnolia chapensis has, indeed, experienced “cresco.”  Stewartia pteropetiolata Planted in the field During our 2012 school year and summer education programs, 1,613  Polyspora longicarpa school-aged children visited the trees, plants and animals through  Sassafras tzumu school field trips and Nature Day Camp. EE also gave 1,607 preschool-aged children a taste of Hoyt Arboretum through Ladybug Walks, Nuts About Nature, Rockin’ Robins Nature Camp and school field trips. Over 450 adults and 258 teen- aged youth experienced EE programs during the year as well. These groups of participants came from all parts of Port- land and the surrounding area and brought with them a wide range of cultural and ethnic demographics.

In addition to our diverse audience, we find that participant age, ecological theme and program length all help shape the EE programs taking place at Hoyt. Some visits were as simple as an hour-long nature walk with 2- to 5-year-olds while wearing the ever-popular Ladybug Backpacks, and other visits were more complex. Eighty teen participants in GRUNT Acer fabri Acer flabellatum (Greenspace Restoration and Urban Naturalist Training) and Jr. GRUNT do intricate studies of the plants and habitats to learn how to become engaging naturalists and gain job skills. Our Summer staff learns about the history of Hoyt Arbore- tum and explores its many trails preparing for the upcoming Nature Day Camps. Adults take part in night-hikes, guided nature walks and gain immensely as they learn along with school-aged children on field trips. The experiences offered at Hoyt Arboretum through PP&R Environmental Education are just as diverse as the place itself. And just as this amaz- ing, living museum experiences a constant “cresco”, so do the education programs happening amongst its branches and sunlit grassy knolls.

There is a second definition of “cresco” however; it also means “to come to be.” Environmental Education programs at Hoyt Arboretum not only teach about the diverse ecology, but they also strive to connect each participant to the natural world with first-hand, authentic experiences. Our hope for every EE program is that the children, youth and adults will come to love nature so that they can continue to care for the Arboretum in the future. We, as educators, find it hard to experience Hoyt Arboretum without being moved by its vastness, its dappled forest floors and its distant howling coyo- tes. We hope that we can help others experience the same each year.
