Lieutenant RAMC Dec, 1914.Captain Dec, 1915. In France from 02/12/1914. Served in France with the 1st and 3rd Cavalry Divisions. After the war engaged in private general practice whilst holding the post of registrar in the RVH and that of assistant physician to the Ulster Hospital for Women and Children. Gradually his interests took shape and he paid particular regard to cardiology and diseases of children, although he never gave up his role as consulting physician. The Centenary Year of the Belfast Medical School coincided with his turn to give the opening address to students at the beginning of the winter session, and he took the opportunity to give them a truly masterly account of the school from its earliest days in Frederick Street. This work was followed in 1959 by his Scott-Heron Lecture on "The Story of the Ulster Hospital". At the visit of the BMA to Belfast in 1937 he made himself responsible for editing all the unsigned articles included in the ‘Book of Belfast’. The loss of his only son, Robert, who qualified in medicine in 1939 and promptly joined the Army, unfortunately only to be killed in Burma after the fall of Singapore during the Second World War, was a grievous blow to him because between father and son there had existed a great understanding. Dr. and Mrs. Marshall generously bequeathed a room in the university medical library to their son’s memory. Born 09/09/1889, Son of WJ Marshall JP and Bertha nee Shaw, Derryvolgie Ave., Belfast. RAMC. Major. MC and 2 Bars. MiD. Died 22/09/1918. Age 27. Educated initially at the Carr and Ballymacbrennan National Schools, he won a scholarship to Lisburn Intermediate School, subsequently Wallace High School, where he won exhibitions in the junior, middle and senior schools, and then an entrance scholarship of £30 to QUB to study medicine. After graduating MB in June 1914 and, having been in the OTC at Queens, (where he was the best shot in his Company and won four bronze medals for training), he joined the Reserve of Officers (RAMC) going to Aldershot at the end of June for preliminary training. On completion of this he expected to be able to return home to Drumbo for a short holiday but the outbreak of war intervened. Posted to Dublin for a short time, he susequently embarked for France on the night of 07/08/1914 with the medical contingent of the Aldershot Division.

Heavily involved in the retreat from Mons, he “came to prominence for good work bravely performed at … Hill 60.” Writing home afterwards, he commented that it was, “a miracle more of them did not get knocked out”. He was also mentioned in dispatches, “for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field” in Sir John French’s last dispatch.

He was promoted to Captain from 01/04/1915 (London Gazette of 23/07/1915).

He was awarded the MC in September 1916. The citation published in the London Gazette read, “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations. He directed the stretcher-bearers under heavy shellfire with the greatest coolness and courage. He succeeded in entering a village which had been heavily shelled, and, with another captain, a sergeant and four men, collected the wounded into a dug-out and succeeded in getting them back later. He has frequently shown great courage.”

He was married to Ella Todd Warnock of Fernleigh, Endsleigh Drive, Belfast, in Drumbo Presbyterian Church on 12/09/1917. She was the only daughter of the late Rev. James Warnock, formerly minister of Drumbo and of Kroonstad, South Africa

Page 11 where he had gone for the sake of his health. One of the ministers officiating was the Rev. Joseph Cordner who may have been the father of James Cordner, who was KIA in April 1918. The best man was Hugh McCormack the bridegroom’s brother who was later to have Campbell’s death commemorated on his own headstone. The officers and men of 15 Field Ambulance gave them a silver salver.

Slightly wounded in late August/early September 1918, he was KIA in France on the 22/09/1918 two days after coming out of hospital and just over a year after his marriage. He was 27 years old and was serving in the 5th.(5) Field Ambulance RAMC. He is buried in Barastre(6) Communal cemetery, Pas de Calsis, France grave 11.

Born 05/05/1891, he was the son of William McCormack, a farmer and Mrs. McCormack of Hillhall House, Lisburn, Co. Down, his death is also commemorated on his brother’s (H.H. McCormack’s) headstone in Drumbo Presbyterian church graveyard. He died on the 12/08/80.

Writing to his parents shortly after his death, Major F.R. Thornton (RAMC) wrote, “I think by this time you will have received news of Major McCormack’s death yesterday morning. A shell hit the shelter in which he and Colonel Bradley were sleeping and both were killed at once. He was buried yesterday afternoon in the cemetery close by in the presence of all the men of his ambulance who could be spared, and detachments from the other ambulances of the division. The General commanding the Division and many other officers were present. At the special request of the men his body was carried to the grave by the N.C.O.’s of the unit. It is difficult for me to express to you the deep sympathy that I feel, as I realise what a terrible loss it must be to you all. We all feel it most deeply, as he was beloved by officers and men. Of his unselfishness and courage it is needless to speak, for the men would follow him anywhere, or do anything which he asked them to do. I wonder if you have any small photographs of him, I should, myself, so much like one and the other officers are asking for it; in addition if you could let us have a few, I know how deeply some of our N.C.O.’s and men of his section would appreciate them. With my very deepest condolence”. Born 05/05/1891, Co. Down

RAMC. Lieutenant. Attached 1st Btn Norfolk Regiment. MiD. Died 14/03/1915. Age 22. RBAI. QUB M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. 1915. Member of OTC.He joined the Special Reserve of Officers in the RAMC. Mobilised 05/08/1914. Posted to serve on the medical staff of the 15th Field Ambulance, entering the war with them on 20th August. Walter took four days leave in the UK at Christmas then shortly after he returned to the front lines he was attached to the 1st Bn. Norfolk Regiment as their medical officer. In a letter to his father he wrote: “Above all things don’t worry. If you keep bright and smiling it will do mother a lot of good. Don’t be downhearted. My risks are very small compared with those of the fighting men, but I

Page 14 want to prepare you for this - I may soon be sent as medical officer to a regiment. This may mean more exposure, but the danger is not much increased. One, however, should look at these things not through narrow personal spectacles, but take a broader, patriotic view. You cannot make omelets without breaking eggs. You cannot have the prosperity and comfort that Britain now enjoys, and for which she has in the past shed blood, without losing, without losing lives. And so I come to my point - that instead of worrying about the whole skin of one’s relatives at the front people at home should rather think of the ultimate result of this war, and be prepared, if necessary, to lose their friends.” Walter was killed whilst tending to wounded when the battalion came under heavy shell fire. He was the eldest son of Joseph and Jessie Graham McCurry of Belfast Bank House, Shankill Rd., Belfast. Ramparts Cemetery, (Lille Gate), Ypres.

McFADDEN, George Dixon Fisher

RNVR. Surgeon Probationer. Born Newtownstewart, 28/6/1892. One of nine children born to the Rev. Jackson McFadden and Mary L McFadden. Jackson McFadden, was Minster of Badoney Presbyterian Church from May 1881 until his death in May 1936.

In order that his family of five sons and four daughters received the best education possible, Jackson McFadden took a house in Melrose Street, Belfast, so that they could attend schools in Belfast. George McFadden was educated at Royal Belfast Academical Institution and the 1911 Ireland Census lists an 18-year-old GDF McFadden as the head of the household at 60 Melrose Street – the other listed occupants are two sisters (Mary, 17, and Evelyn, 15) and a brother (Kenneth, 13). In October 1911, he enrolled as a medical student at Queen’s University, Belfast, where he won a Hockey Blue and was a member of the Officers’ Training Corps from November 1913.

George McFadden’s elder brother, John, had also been a member of the Queen’s University Officers’ Training Corps between November 1908 and September 1911. He was already a qualified doctor at the start of the war and he enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps in October 1914, serving as a Captain attached to the 12th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

In February 1916, George McFadden interrupted his studies when he was appointed as a Probationary Surgeon, with the rank of Sub Lieutenant, RNVR. These appointments allowed small naval craft to have a medical student with clinical Page 16 knowledge on the ship’s roster. Following a preliminary period of training at the Royal Naval Hospital in Haslar (during which he contracted typhoid fever), McFadden was appointed to HMS Archer, an Acheron-class destroyer based in the Firth of Forth. In the spring of 1916, HMS Archer was transferred to the 3rd Battle Squadron, operating in the Mediterranean.

Whilst serving with HMS Archer in the North Sea, George McFadden had the terrifying experience of being washed overboard:

“I was lifted like a and carried on a wave out to sea. I could see the ship silhouetted against the horizon ... I thought, „This is the end, death cometh sooner or later, and the wardroom will be thinking in the morning that the doctor is having a long sleep.‟ The next thing I remember was seeing a light in the stern of the ship and I realised that I must be closer to it. Managing to grab the sides, as the ship rolled over I managed finally to clamber on deck. I think that it was the backlash of the sea that carried me off the deck, which was my salvation; but I do not like to think or talk about the episode, though I shall never forget it.” - From “The Surgeon Probationers” by R. S. Allison.

The PCI RH entry records that George McFadden served with HMS Victory, a Shore Barracks Establishment, during the Great War.

After the war George McFadden completed his medical studies, graduating with Honours as a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics in 1919. He obtained his Masters in Surgery (with Gold Medal) in 1923 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1924. He developed an expertise in children’s surgery when he was a resident surgical officer at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children.

In 1927 he married Gasparina Dos Santos in Newberry, Berkshire. He returned to Northern Ireland to take up a position at the Ulster Hospital for Children and Women in Templemore Avenue, and was appointed as a surgeon at the Belfast Infirmary in 1939. He gained an international reputation for performing hare-lip and cleft-palate corrective surgery on children.

He was President of the Ulster Medical Society in 1956/57, at which time he was also Senior Surgeon at both the Belfast Infirmary and the Ulster Hospital for Children and Women.

George McFadden was a member of the Fitzroy Avenue Kirk Session in 1949 and remained at Fitzroy until his retirement to England, where he devoted himself to Page 17 painting (a self portrait was presented to the Belfast City Hospital). Died 1891 aged 88, Windsor, Berkshire. Fitzroy Avenue Presbyterian Church WM and PCI RH. Badoney PCI RH.
