3 Mission

The MISSION of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is to prepare globally-minded, community-focused physicians to meet the needs of rural and medically underserved populations and promote research to improve human health.

VCOM’s faculty, staff, and students VALUE: Professionalism, integrity, duty, compassion, altruism, knowledge, and critical thinking.

Class of 2020 Statement

The Class of 2020 adopted this class statement at orientation to reflect their commitment to VCOM and their future as osteopathic physicians:

As a family, we are unified in the pursuit of humility in life and excellence in education today, to more completely serve the people of tomorrow. We seek to carry on our legacy as vanguards of osteopathy and to embrace with healing hands. We commit to give with no expectation and to advocate for the wellness of mind, body and spirit of our patients with a local focus and a global perspective.

The Degree of Osteopathic Medicine

The degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) is granted to and conferred by VCOM upon candidates who are of good moral, professional, and ethical character and have satisfactorily completed all academic and national board requirements.

4 Letter from the President Dear Class of 2020, On behalf of the entire College, we want to take this time to congratulate each graduate. It is your dedication, strength, and stamina that has brought you to this exciting milestone in your career. When you enter your residency and further training, you will be a significant caregiver for your patients during this time. Your future is so bright it is blinding. The practice of medicine you will enter after today will not be the same practice of medicine when you retire. Remember these truths that have been so since Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, the father of osteopathic medicine graduated: “You do not know all of medicine today and you never will, so be a life-long learner. Caring for the whole person is to care for their mental health, their physical health and their spiritual well-being, so practice life-long caring. And remember the human body is a wonderful creation with an amazing ability to heal when given the right environment, the right care, and right support.” We are so very proud of every graduate and welcome you to join over 3,100 graduates known as VCOM Alumni!

Commencement Speaker John G. Rocovich Jr., JD, LLM is the founder of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Mr. Rocovich is an attorney and the Chairman of the law firm Moss & Rocovich Attorneys-at-Law, P.C. in Roanoke, where he practices taxation and trusts and estate law. Mr. Rocovich has dedicated himself to his alma mater, Virginia Tech, and has held many offices to assist in the enhancement of that university.

His interests and support extend to other areas of education and civic organizations where he serves as a board member, including colleges and universities, museums, and financial and commercial institutions.

VERSE 3:

There's a place in Southern Appalachia Where physicians learn to see more than disease Where we learn to heal the body, mind, and spirit And to help all we touch to finally find some peace

CHORUS

31 The Osteopathic Oath

I do hereby affirm my loyalty to the profession I am about to enter. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and the life of my patients, to retain their confidence and respect both as a physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my professional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treatment consistent with good judgment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature’s laws and the body’s inherent capacity for recovery.

I will be ever vigilant in aiding in the general welfare of the community, sustaining its laws and institutions, not engaging in those practices which will in any way bring shame or discredit upon myself or my profession. I will give no drugs for deadly purposes to any person, though it may be asked of me.

I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by word or by act cast imputations upon them or their rightful practices.

I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art. To my college I will be loyal and strive always for its best interests and for the interests of the students who will come after me. I will be ever alert to further the application of basic biologic truths to the healing arts and to develop the principles of osteopathy which were first enunciated by Andrew Taylor Still.
