Indoor DIVISION II WoMen’s

Highlights

Lincoln (MO) uses 60-meter dash to stroll to championship: Lincoln’s women’s indoor track and field team had not won a national championship since 2006, but the Blue Tigers made up for lost time March 14. Burying the field under a wave of speed, Lincoln romped to 100.5 points. Grand Valley State finished an extremely distant second with 48 points. If the outcome was ever in doubt, it disappeared after the 60-meter dash when the Tigers collected 23 points on a 2-3-4-6-7 finish. St. Augustine’s junior Barbara Pierre won the race in 7.27 seconds, a meet record, but she was followed by a pride of Tigers that included freshman Samoy Hackett, Janika Martell, Shanna-Kay Wright, Jody-Ann Powell and Nandelle Cameron. It was the third consecutive 60-meter title for Pierre, a first for Division II women’s track and field. It was not enough, however, to stop the Tiger advance. Another avalanche of points came in the 200-meter dash when Hackett won in 23.83 seconds to lead a 1-3-4 assault. That netted 21 more points. The Tigers also scored well in the jumps, the pentathlon and the 1,600-meter relay. “A lot of kids stepped up more than I expected them to so we got 100 points,” said coach Victor Thomas. “Hey, that’s more than I could have thought. I’m proud of them.” The day was also special for Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Pixler, who became the first Division II woman to win three consecutive mile titles, taking the championship with a win- ning time of 4:43.69. Pixler, a former soccer player at Seattle Pacific, bettered teammate and runner-up Jane Larson by more than five seconds as the duo finished 1-2 for the second straight year. Pixler later added the 5,000-meter title, crossing the finish line in 16:22.64. The mile/5K double was just the second in women’s Division II history. The pentathlon competition was the first for Division II, and the initial championship went to Central Missouri’s Anne Carlson, who tallied 3,830 points behind strong efforts in the and the . She took the lead after the third event (the shot put) and never trailed again. “It feels great,” Carlson said. “I redshirted indoors last year, so I decided I had two years to do it. It has been my goal since I found out that it was a meet that I wanted to win, to be the first one ever. No one else can ever be the first. “It kind of sunk in when I got my award and my coach hugged me and I was crying up on the stand. It’s crazy to know that in Division II, I am the best pentathlete.” Another notable accomplishment came from Johnson C. Smith sophomore Shermaine Williams, who successfully defended her national title in the 60-meter hurdles, win- ning in 8.20 seconds – just short of the meet record she set in the prelims on March 13.
