(c)Copyright 1998 MSB Publishing Co. P.O. Box 221934 Chantilly, Va.20153 Antonin Dvorak(l841-1904) Atong with Smetana and Janacek, Dvorak is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Nationalist movement in Czechoslovakia. He absorbed folk melodies and found effective ways of using them in his orchestral, choral, chamber and operatic music. With the help of Brahms, Dvorak was able to secure the funds to write a set of Slavonic Dances in the style and manner of Brahm's Hungarian Dances. These worlis gave I)vorak fame throughout Europe and are today among his most frequent performed works.
Slavonic Dance No. I Starting with the 2nd measure the tempo should be taken in a one beat pattern. It would be much better to rehearse this much slower so that the students can gain the melodic and rhythmic flow. The accented notes are very important. At measure (28) the Alto Saxophones have a very important passage and will need work to gain the necessary speed. Starting at measure (80) will need to be verylight in style and on the 9th measure much care should be given to the Flutes and lst Trumpets. Starting at measure (144) the tempo should be picked up a bit to give the final section much flavor and excitement.
