FEATURED MEN’S SINGLES QUARTER-FINALS – BOTTOM HALF

Arthur Ashe Stadium [2] (GBR) vs [6] (JPN) Murray Leads 7-1 [3] (SUI) vs [WC] Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) del Potro Leads 4-2

DAY 10 HIGHLIGHTS

 He is the last teenager to reach the US Open quarter-finals, bursting onto the scene with 23 straight wins in 2008. A year later he took the title, ending ’s 40-match US Open winning streak after routing 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 for the worst loss of the Spaniard’s career. Though he returned to the quarter-finals in 2012, Juan Martin del Potro has spent much of his time since 2009 healing the wrists that lifted the championship trophy on . He was unable to defend his title in 2010 following right wrist surgery, then missed the tournament in 2014 and 2015 with an injured left wrist that required operations to its joint, ligament and tendon.

 As the World No. 142, del Potro needed a wild card at the 2016 US Open. He hasn’t looked back, beating three seeds without dropping a set en route to his fourth quarter-final in . The 27-year-old Argentine faces No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka on Wednesday. Del Potro has swept their last four FedEx ATP 2 Head meetings, including wins at 2012 Estoril following his first wrist surgery and 2016 Wimbledon after the second, third and fourth.

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO RANKING MILESTONES * Lowest-ranked Grand Slam quarter-finalist since No. 144 at 2014 Wimbledon * Lowest-ranked US Open quarter-finalist since No. 174 reached semi-finals in 1991 * Would be lowest-ranked Grand Slam semi-finalist since No. 237 Vladimir Voltchkov (2000 Wimbledon), finalist since No. 177 John Marks (1978 Aus. Open) and champion since No. 212 Mark Edmondson (1976 Aus. Open) * Would be lowest-ranked US Open finalist since beginning of Emirates ATP Rankings on August 23, 1973

 While del Potro traveled the road to recovery, Wawrinka emerged as one of the ATP World Tour’s most consistent players. The 31-year-old Swiss did not reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final until his 23rd major appearance at the 2010 US Open. He has advanced to 12 quarter-finals or better in the 24 majors since then, highlighted by two championships, three semi-finals and four quarter-finals over the last three seasons (including 2016 US Open).

 In Wednesday’s other semi-final, World No. 2 Andy Murray meets No. 6 seed Kei Nishikori, who is three wins from securing the largest payout in history. Nishikori would earn $3.5 million as the US Open champion and a $1 million bonus for winning the Emirates Airline US Open Series. However, Nishikori is 1-4 in Grand Slam quarter-finals, 1-7 against Murray overall and 0-12 versus Top 2 players since reaching the 2014 US Open final.

 Since suffering third-round losses at ATP Masters 1000 hard-court events in Indian Wells and Miami, Murray has made a strong push to finish the season as World No. 1. The 2012 champion can pass Djokovic in the Emirates ATP Race to London if he wins the US Open title and Djokovic does not reach the final. Murray is 26-1 since finishing runner-up to Djokovic at Roland Garros and he has advanced to seven consecutive finals on tour.
