  • Indian Philosophy Encyclopædia Britannica Article
Indian philosophy Encyclopædia Britannica Article Indian philosophy the systems of thought and reflection that were developed by the civilizations of the Indian subcontinent. They include both orthodox (astika) systems, namely, the Nyaya, Vaisesika, Samkhya, Yoga, Purva-mimamsa, and Vedanta schools of philosophy, and unorthodox (nastika) systems, such as Buddhism and Jainism. Indian thought has been concerned with various philosophical problems, significant among them the nature of the world (cosmology), the nature of reality (metaphysics), logic, the nature of knowledge (epistemology), ethics, and religion. General considerations Significance of Indian philosophies in the history of philosophy In relation to Western philosophical thought, Indian philosophy offers both surprising points of affinity and illuminating differences. The differences highlight certain fundamentally new questions that the Indian philosophers asked. The similarities reveal that, even when philosophers in India and the West were grappling with the same problems and sometimes even suggesting similar theories, Indian thinkers were advancing novel formulations and argumentations. Problems that the Indian philosophers raised for consideration, but that their Western counterparts never did, include such matters as the origin (utpatti) and apprehension (jñapti) of truth (pramanya). Problems that the Indian philosophers for the most part ignored but that helped shape Western philosophy include the question of whether knowledge arises from experience or from reason and distinctions such as that between analytic and synthetic judgments or between contingent and necessary truths. Indian thought, therefore, provides the historian of Western philosophy with a point of view that may supplement that gained from Western thought. A study of Indian thought, then, reveals certain inadequacies of Western philosophical thought and makes clear that some concepts and distinctions may not be as inevitable as they may otherwise seem.

B. Sonule Dr. Dipti Mukherji Professor, Department of Geography Professor, Department of Geography University of Mumbai University of Mumbai [email protected] [email protected] Abstract: Medical tourism is often used synonymously with health tourism. Medical tourism is a growing sector in India. The term “medical tourism” was coined by travel agencies and the mass media to describe the rapidly growing practice of travelling across international borders to obtain hi-tech medical care. Healthcare has become a global market, with emerging, developing and developed nations competing for health tourists. Medical tourism is the travel of people to another country for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment in that country. Traditionally, people would travel from less developed countries to major medical centres in highly developed countries for medical treatment that was unavailable in their own countries. The recent trend is for people to travel from developed countries to third world countries for medical treatments because of cost consideration, though the traditional pattern still continues. Located at a distance of 25kms from Chopda city and 4kms from Adavad, Unapdev is listed as ASI site and is famous for its hot water fountain. The place is known for its hot spring. Unapdev is situated on Amalner-Chopda-Vari state high way. Tourist can reach this health resort by taking route from Chopda to Yawal on which Advad is situated.

  • Tracing Giftedness: an Exploration of Theories, Programmes and Emerging Dilemmas
Tattva-Journal of Philosophy 2017, Vol. 9, No. 2, 23-32 ISSN 0975-332X│https://doi.org/10.12726/tjp.18.3 Tracing Giftedness: An Exploration of Theories, Programmes and Emerging Dilemmas Anupama Mahajan* Abstract In the recent years, the conception of giftedness in children has garnered a lot of attention from educationists and psychologists in India. Children marked as gifted are said to display above average abilities as compared with their peers. In this paper, I attempt to show that despite multiple notions and theories of giftedness, displaying exceptional abilities in mathematics and science seem to be the dominant focus and trend. In support of this claim, I list out the various Gifted and Talented Programmes of Giftedness in India. By exploring the various landscapes of excellence across diverse schooling environment, I draw from my doctoral research to highlight the ways in which giftedness is socially circulating and the factors that produce, and the processes that enable and sustain it. Through this study, I hope to contribute to the sociology of education in terms of understanding middle class / elite aspirations with regard to education of their children, elite parenting practices, conceptions of giftedness and how „cultural capital‟ is transmitted from one generation to the next. Keywords: Gifted Children, Gifted and Talented Programmes, Academic Giftedness, Conceptions of Giftedness, Construction of Ability, Parental Aspirations * National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, India; [email protected] 23 Tattva-Journal of Philosophy, Vol. 9, No. 2 ISSN 0975-332X Introduction In recent years, the concept of giftedness in children has received a lot of attention in the field of Education, Psychology and Sociology.
