Academy Prep’s 3rd Annual The Performing Arts Club at Academy Musical Prep took it to the top with this year’s production of High School Musical Jr. Is A The group of eighteen Academy Prep students was directed by Mr. Donal Slam Dunk! Noonan and assisted by Program Director, Mrs. Danielle DiRosa-Gallagher. High School Musical Jr. is a love story as well as a testament to finding yourself while trying to stay loyal to your friends during that difficult time in life: High School. The two main characters are Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez. Troy is a basketball star and Gabriella is a brainiac, but they find common ground singing in an audition for the school musical. Academy Prep students rehearsed industriously throughout the spring semester to prepare for this musical production, which is based on the Disney Movie of the same name. “Learning to sing the right lines, dance and dribble a basketball was new,” said star Andrew Gaona. Andrew is not new to the spotlight. This is his second role in an Academy Prep musical production. His first involvement in a theater production was as the props manager in his 5th grade year. He took a lead role as the Cat in the Hat last year and maintained the “status quo” this year as Troy Bolton. Andrew was also featured in the song “Let’s Get Together,” written and performed by LX Harris and other local youth. Andrew’s outlook on musical performances is similar to his experience as a student at Academy Prep. He says, “The road leading to a show is long, seemingly slow and difficult, but come show time, standing on that stage, the feeling of accomplishment is outstanding.” Andrew will graduate from Academy Prep this month, and plans to pursue the arts through high school and college. “If I hadn’t been encouraged to sign up for drama as a 5th grader, I may never have found my talent.”
