BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

Welcome to Blackfield & Langley Football club

Good evening and welcome to Gang Warily for our encounter versus Bashley FC in the Wessex Premier League.

We extend a warm welcome to the players and supporters of Bashley FC including the Match Officials, Referee James Byng and Assistants Ryan Thomas and Mark Robertson.

Bashely FC are currently sat two below us in the league table with 3 win and only 1 loss, not an easy team to beat.

Blackfield & Langley are still a bit gutted with their first loss on Saturday against Hamble, they are keen and looking to bounce back today and hopefully take the 3 points.

Our next game is in the FA Vase away to Bournemouth Poppies, it was a draw during a pre-season friendly so both teams should be good for a battle.

We wish all in attendance this evening an enjoyable match and a safe journey home.

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1935 After playing in the war time Hythe and District League the Club joined the Southampton Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Senior Cup losing to NDLC. However, the following season the Club won the Cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this with progression in mind, the Club applied to join the League and made their debut in Division Three West in the 1950/1 season. Although title winners the following season, the Club did not move into Division Two until 1956/7. They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of 1959/60. Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in 1974/5 after finishing third but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/2 the reorganised and Division Four was swallowed up by Division Three and as runners up promotion was secured to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Locksheath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with eleven top six finishes including, three second places and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/8. With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87, the Club recognised that to compete against the best in local football, the long term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a playing surface that is still to this day, the envy of many teams and the enthusiastic Committee set about bringing the ground up to the required standard. Development continues to this day. The best opportunity for promotion came in the Championship year 1997/8 but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The Club’s chance for promotion came two years later - a last match win at West Wight Mayflower earned the third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Division 1 the club were relegated to the new Division 2 in 2004. The Club in 2004/5 became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the FA Adult Standard Charter. 7 BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

The 2008/9 season saw success return to the Club with promotion back to the top division of the Wessex League under the guidance of . Jon continued for a 2nd season finishing the season mid-table. Jon left the club in the early part of the 2010/11 season and Assistant Manager Louis Bell was put in charge with the team eventually finishing in 14th position and 16th in the subsequent season. The Club had in incredible 2012/13 season under the leadership of Ashley Vickers, winning the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league by 10 points, reaching the 4th Qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to Hastings United, and reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase. In stark contrast, 2013/2014 season was the most tumultuous in recent years with a number of changes in playing, coaching and management throughout the season, leaving the club unsettled for the most part. Taking on the manager’s role mid-way through the season, Kevin Gibbens, assisted by Chris Farrell, managed to finish a very credible 6th. 2014/15 season started with John Robson taking control of the 1st team who started off brightly but with some injuries and a general failure to score goals, the season didn’t quite pan out as planned although the team still finished a credible 5th in the league and were Russell Cotes Cup winners. Glenn Howes took the reins in his managerial debut in 2015/16, ultimately guiding the team to 3rd place behind Salisbury FC, missing out on the 2nd spot to Sholing with a defeat at Fareham Town on the last game of the season. The Watersiders also finished runners up in the Southampton Senior Cup, losing heavily to defending champions, Team Solent, made it to the 3rd round qualifying of the FA Cup, (losing to Maidenhead Utd) and were losing semi-finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup. After another season of going close, Glenn was joined by James Wood and the Club surpassed the previous success of 2012/13, enjoying its most successful season in 2017/18, winning the Wessex Premier Division by one point in a very tight race with Andover Town and benefitted from the restructuring of Step 4 Leagues, gaining promotion for the first time to the Southern League. Season 2017/18 also saw two appearances at St Marys in both the Hampshire Senior and Southampton Senior Cup finals, unfortunately losing on both occasions to Havant & Waterlooville and Southampton FC respectively. The Club also made a semi-final appearance in the Sydenhams League Cup and equalled the record in the FA Vase by reaching the last 32 but eventually losing to Bracknell Town in a midweek replay. Success continued in 2018/19 with the Club winning Southern League South Division One and narrowly losing in the semi final of the Southern League Cup. Success on the field of play together with hard work behind the scenes in connection with Ground Grading requirements has enabled another piece of Club history to be created with promotion to the Southern League South Premier Division. Over the years, the Club has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners in four of them. The last success in 1998, producing a league and cup double. In the 2000 final, the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a replay to AC Delco after a power failure lead to the abandonment of the first game with 15 minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead.

Bashley FC – History of The Bash

Bashley Football Club Founded in 1947, Bashley FC joined the Bournemouth League in 1950 and left in 1983 to join the Hampshire League. In 1986 they became founder members of the Wessex League and won the title for next three seasons. In 1987-88 Bashley reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase, losing narrowly to Emley. In 1989 the club joined the Southern League Southern Division and won the title in their first season. The following season in the Premier Division Bash were in contention for promotion to the Conference but finished in fourth place. The club’s rise came to an end two years later with relegation back to the Southern Division. Bashley reached the FA Cup First Round proper for the first time in 1994/95 and won 1-0 at Chesham. A Second-Round home tie with Swansea ended with a 1-0 defeat, with Bash came close to causing a huge upset. August 1997 Bash appointed ex-European Cup winner Jimmy Case as manager. They were promotion challengers during 1997-98, but eventually finished third, with a good FA Trophy run into the last sixteen, losing narrowly at Conference side Hayes. Young Bash midfielder, Wade Elliott, signed for AFC Bournemouth in January 2000 for £5,000, with Bash receiving further appearance money. Wade subsequently progressed to the Championship with Burnley. 2001/2002 resulted in another FA Trophy run ended by finalists, Stevenage Borough of the Conference. A top six place was achieved in 2002/03. The season was capped by a first ever final, played at Southampton’s St Mary’s. It was a superb occasion for the club despite an eventual 2-1 defeat to Conference bound Aldershot Town, with Bash coming close to defeating their illustrious opponents. Barry Blankley resigned early in 2002-3 and leading players departed. Bashley narrowly missed out on promotion under new manager John Robson and had to settle for a place in Isthmian Division One, as a result of FA restructuring. Robson departed, and Geoff Butler was appointed in the summer. Bash started well but had to settle for a mid-table finish. Butler departed summer 2005 and Dave Wakefield took charge as player/manager. After a poor start, Wakefield left and Steve Riley took over as player/manager. An excellent run-in saw Bash finish just outside the play off places.

Another FA restructure saw Bash back in the Southern League South and West Division. They enjoyed a record-breaking season, winning the league by 28 points and achieving a rare double century of 102 points and 111 goals, including a spell of 27 League matches unbeaten. Promotion was an all-round team effort, Bash having the most prolific attack and the meanest defence in the league. Richard Gillespie finished up with 41 goals, the highest total in any of the Southern League divisions and broke the club all time goal-scoring record held by Colin Cummings, which had stood for over thirty years. Bashley acquitted themselves well in the Southern Premier and finished in fifth place. 2007-08 ended in disappointment with a 4-1 defeat by Team Bath in the play-off semi-final. Steve Riley brought in new signings, but 2008-9 was a very different season. Bash were in the bottom four for long periods but ended with a final position of 14th. Summer 2009 saw the departure of Gillespie to Eastleigh, having scored 173 goals in 308 appearances. Steve Riley signed Farnborough striker Mark Gamble to ensure that Bash entered 2009-10 with renewed hope of being competitive. In 2009/10 Bash just missed out on a top five finish on final day of the season. An FA Trophy run saw Bash eventually lose to Conference National side, Crawley Town. Bash lost more key players for 2010-11 but rallied to secure a top half finish. After a good start to the next season, however, Bash struggled. A solid run ensured survival, although Steve Riley left during the summer. Bash appointed former Basingstoke manager Frank Gray for 2012-13 and ended the season in 17th place. Paul Gazzard and Stewart Kearn took over the managerial hot seats in 2013-14 with a much-reduced budget. Results did not go for Bashley, players departed and Kearn stepped down. John Pyatt joined Gazzard to try and stave off relegation. The club was relegated to the South and West Division and were lucky to survive the season. Andy Darnton, Graham Speechley-Price, Martin Spiers and Dominic Cuncliffe all had brief spells as manager before Speechley-Price took over as caretaker manager in February 2015. The club battled on, but finished bottom and were relegated. Andy Howard took the reserves to the 2014-15 Wyvern League title. The FA reprieved Bashley, ensuring Southern League football. Ex league player David Stride became manager, only to be replaced by Steve Riley. Riley resigned following a run of defeats and Tom Prodomo took charge. The season ended with no wins, two draws, a bottom finish and relegation to the Wessex League. Season highlight was the 1-0 FA Trophy win against Cinderford, eventual S&W champions. The 2016-7 campaign, Bashley’s first season back in the Wessex for many years, resulted in a 14th place finish. Almost at the end of that season manager Tom Prodomo departed for Weymouth. Bashley promoted from within with former assistant manager Paul Morris taking over in the manager’s hot seat for the 2017- 18 season. The highlight of the 2017/18 came from the Reserves who won the Wyvern Combination League Cup; with the first team one again finishing in 14th place.

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935) BLFC GROUND HISTORY

GANG WARILY

The above is a Replica of an instrument of war used in 1314 at the battle of Bannockburn. These four-pointed spikes were called ‘Calthrops’ and were screwed on the ground to cripple the horses of the invading English Calvary, when the calthrops fell to the ground they presented a lethal point facing upwards causing havoc by piercing the hooves of the horses.

Some years later the clan Drummond were allowed, as a reward for their services to Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, to include calthrops in their coat of arms. When completed, what better than: “GANG WARILY” (Go carefully)

In 1772 member of the clan Drummond came south to Hampshire, part of this land was purchased by a petroleum company, splitting up one of the Drummonds farms. Because of this division the area had to have a new name and so it was called Gang Warily,

Many years later a part of this property was leased for ground extraction, when this was worked out the mayor of Cadland sold the old site to Fawley Parish Council to Initially prevent industrial development in the centre of the Parish. The council arranged for infilling and landscaping part of the deep excavation, later selling off the adjacent land now known as Priestcroft to pay for the project.

Gang Warily Recreation and Community Centre was built and opened to the public by Fawley Parish Council in 1986.
