To broaden the horizon of knowledge about these ancient treasures, Niroj Maharjan, heritage guide, will escort participants through the entire route, providing them with details about the structures. He believes that educational tours across the old lanes and routes are of utmost importance. As there are only a handful of people left who can provide substantial information on these topics, historical buildings and monuments, especially the intangible ones, are in certain ways heading towards extinction. The first of seven cultural walks is expected to take place on 26 October at Patan Durbar Square. The three hour tour will encompass these checkpoints: Patan Dhoka – Sulima Square – Pimbahal Pokhari – Nyakha Chowk – Nagbahal – Swatha Square – Mangalbazar. These heritage walks will center around the six remaining UNESCO heritage sites for . So, why should you go? From our point of view, this is an excellent learning experience for anyone interested. People of all ages and all backgrounds should give this cultural soirée some thought. And frankly, if history and art doesn’t bore you, you should be in for a treat. From the organiser’s perspective, the event invitations are open to all but they specifically target the youth because, by including the young population, the preservation of these sites and their stories could be more effective. They would also help ensure the handing down of information from one generation to another. As conservation and preservation of these sites is key, this initiative hopes to yield as much youth participation as possible. In this act, ECCA, a member of IUCN and a leading organization in conservation practice in local communities for the past 27 years, has put much faith and effort to make this attempt a success. Additionally, the proceeds from this fund-raising event will go to their “Support- a-Child” campaign that aims to provide resources for the proper education of students in rural communities. !
