THE PRELUDE

THE † Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord. And let light perpetual shine upon them. You are to be praised, O God, in Zion; to you shall vows be performed in Jerusalem. To you that hear prayer shall all flesh come. Rest eternal . . .

THE Sung by the Choir.

THE SALUTATION & THE Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Let us pray . . . O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of your servant David, and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of your saints: through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE READING Isaiah 61: 1-3 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion—to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. V: The Word of the Lord. R: Thanks be to God.

THE Sicut cervus G.P. Palestrina (1525-94)

Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum, ita desiderat anima mea ad te Deus. As the deer longs for running water, so my soul longs for you, my God.

THE 1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord for ever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. V: The Word of the Lord. R: Thanks be to God.

THE Call to remembrance Richard Farrant (1530-80)

Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy loving kindness, which hath been ever of old. O remember not the sins and offences of my youth: but according to thy mercy, think Thou on me, O Lord, for thy goodness.

2 THE HOLY John 6: 37-40 V: The Lord be with you. R: And also with you. V: † The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. R: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’ V: The Gospel of the Lord. R: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

David requested that no or eulogies be delivered.

THE We beseech you, O Lord, mercifully to assist our prayers, which we offer for the soul of your servant, David, that he for whom we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, may be found worthy to enter into the blessed company of all your faithful people, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

THE

The following prayer is inserted by the Celebrant into the Eucharistic Prayer. Remember also, O Lord, the soul of your servant David who has gone before us with the sign of faith and who sleeps the sleep of peace. To him, O Lord, and to all who rest in Christ, grant we pray a place of refreshment, light, and peace, beside the waters of comfort in that paradise where there is neither sorrow, nor sighing. In the glorious light of your countenance, O God, and of your saints, provide him such perfecting as is his need, and as your most merciful loving kindness does appoint. Grant to him, more and more, we pray, every fulfillment of your promised good, even the unimaginable things which you have prepared for them that love you. And of your mercy, grant that we, with these your servants and all your saints, may finally reach the beatific light, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE GREAT AMEN

7 ABOUT PRAYING FOR THE DEAD Many in this day and age have difficulty with the concept of praying for the dead, but nothing could be a greater sign of our belief in the resurrection than taking time to pray for those who have died. If we believe that due to the work of Jesus Christ, death no longer has any sting and that the gates of hell have been harrowed, we therefore must pray for all faithful believers, whether they are on this side of the curtain of life, or whether they have passed on to the other side of existence. Death, because of our Lord, can no longer separate us—we are all a part of the same Christian fellowship. Thus, we pray for the dead, and we hope that they continue to pray for us. After all, we all share in the same Eucharistic feast—we all share the living bread and the saving cup, and each one of us needs the prayers of the other.

† Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. †
