1. FOREWORD BY LEO KANEMAN, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE FESTIVAL

Cinéma Tout Ecran confirms its singularity by focusing on the films and their artistic qualities and disregarding the cinema-television frontier. With the International Series Competition, Cinéma Tout Ecran also asserts its state-of-the-art position. Producers, television channels and the public all grow more and more enthusiastic about this genre. The fans are changing as those who used to confess their interest for television series reluctantly now loudly assert the creative qualities of this specific format. The cinema lovers may soon be superseded by series aficionados who consider that series are now the spearhead of audiovisual creation. The globalization process of the format progresses with Switzerland’s hailed entry in the international league (with Nos archives secrètes).

With several dozens of thousands of people attending the event in 2005, Cinéma Tout Ecran is, after Locarno, one of the festivals with the highest attendance. This means that beyond the filmmakers and moviegoers, Cinéma Tout Ecran attracts a very broad audience.

Benefiting from Europe’s recognition through the support of the MEDIA programme, Cinéma Tout Ecran is ideally placed to promote and to become the figurehead of the Swiss cinema. The Festival is an excellent place to exchange and mix, and gives an ideal opportunity for the work of the directors to be presented to professionals coming from all over the world.

For Cinéma Tout Ecran has more than one advantage: a close collaboration with international channels; sections that give the Swiss works many possibilities to be broadcast in Switzerland, in Europe and throughout the world; the Geneva Select Market where Swiss filmmakers and producers have the opportunity to meet with other professionals and which purpose is to help Swiss films to be exported. Work In Progress has the same objective but mediates earlier on, stimulating international producers to invest and co-produce the films.

“Restore the image of the Swiss cinema abroad”, as says the objective of the Federal Office of Culture, is actually a good idea, but we have to implement it.

Léo Kaneman General and artistic director of Cinéma Tout Ecran

SAUF LE RESPECT QUE JE VOUS DOIS by Fabienne Godet, France, 2005, 35mm, colour, 90’, orig Fr starring: Olivier Gourmet, , ,

SYNOPSIS: The invisible mobbing François has been enduring and tolerating for years on his work place has now become unbearable. His awakening is all the more rude that it is late. His friend and colleague, Simon Lacaze is fired and commits suicide. He then asks his boss to justify himself. He chases him by car and he inadvertently causes a car accident in which the boss is killed. One guesses that he will be judged for his actions, but nobody will be accused of having forced Simon Lacaze to commit suicide. What if it were normal to rebel against psychological violence?

DIRECTOR: Besides her Psychology studies, Fabienne Godet played theatre and once collaborated on a short film. She found there a new liking for cinema and after receiving her degree in Psychology, she took Film Studies, while working as a medico-social worker. In 1992, she directed and self-financed her first short film called La vie comme ça. Seven years later, in 1999, her mid-length film La tentation de l’innocence was selected for the Festival de Cannes.

13. GREAT FILMMAKER ON THE SMALL SCREEN

KEN LOACH

Ken Loach was born on 17 June, 1936, in Nuneaton. After studying law at Oxford, he branched out into acting and then worked with the Northampton Repertory Theatre. This led to television, where he directed a series of docu-dramas. While Free Cinema was soaring high, Ken Loach made three radical pieces of work : Poor Cow (1968), Kes (1969), and Family Life (1971), which positioned him as a committed filmmaker. In spite of a few successful historical or geographical excursions – to the Spain of 1936, with Land and Freedom (1995); Latin America, with Carla’s Song (1996) and North America, with Bread and Roses - Ken Loach draws his best screenplays from everyday adventures. His heroes are the misfits of soaring liberalism. Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair have ably provided him with an inexhaustible crucible of stories about unfortunate souls who, despite the misery inflicted on them, try hard to keep their self respect; characters like those in Riff Raff (1990), Ladybird Ladybird (1994), Raining Stones (1993) or Sweet Sixteen (2002). Most of Loach’s films have been shown at the Cannes Festival. Hidden Agenda (1990) and Raining Stones both won the Jury Award, and his last film, The Wind that Shakes the Barley (2006) walked away with the Palme d’or. More than a film, this award crowned the work of a just and uncompromising man, true to his ideals. For all these reasons, the CAC Voltaire and Cinéma Tout Ecran are paying tribute to him.

TELEVISION FILMS PRESENTED AT THE FESTIVAL

Documentary films Auditions (1980) A Question of Leadership (1981) Which Side Are You On? (1984) The Flickering Flame (1997)

Fiction films Cathy Come Home (1966) The Gamekeeper (1980)

After the Festival, the CAC Voltaire will continue the tribute to Ken Loach and show some of his films made for the cinema - from November 6 on.

14. SHORT FILMS

For many years Cinéma Tout Ecran has defended short films and the 2006 edition of the Festival lives up to its tradition. First, we have decided to concentrate the screenings over a three day period at the end of the Festival in order to make the event. Second, we move to one of the major multiplexes of Geneva: the Rialto Cornavin, a stone’s throw from the station. Third, throughout the week a short film will open the prime screening of the Festival just before the feature film. And finally, special attention will be given to the Swiss short films in the various programs and within the Geneva Select Market. All these elements for one same purpose in the end: promote the emergence of the short films onto the “commercial” sphere, to take them out of the aficionados ghetto where they tend to complacently limit themselves, to get an ever larger public to see them.

Cinéma Tout Ecran proudly presents its selection comprised of 86 films coming from about 30 different – mostly European – countries in a non-exhaustive panorama of the 2005 and 2006 production. 50 of these short films participate in the international competition. Among them are 6 Swiss films, and 13 other Swiss productions are enlisted in the Swiss competition. This selection will be complemented by an International Critics’ Week program and an Outlook on Belgium. As usual, short films directors, actors and professionals will attend the Festival.

Cinéma Tout Ecran invites you on a trip through images selected by Annie Lefèvre, Massia Pougatch, Pauline Robert-Grandpierre, Bruno Quiblier and Philippe Clivaz. The films will be screened on Thursday, November 2nd and during the nights of November 3rd and 4th. We will be happy to meet you there.

15. SUMMER 2006 IN PALESTINE: FILMMAKER’S VIEWS

For Cinéma Tout Ecran, the fact of including in the Festival this unique program was essential, in as much as it corresponds to the mission that is ours i.e. the discovery of new talents and the representation of reality through fiction. The Palestinian filmmakers are living a terrible situation of conflict. We believe that it is by allowing the artistic and cultural identities of each filmmaker to reach out towards others that we best defend universal values. We thank the Geneva filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff and Akka Films for having suggested this programme as well as the City of Geneva for its support. Léo Kaneman

THE PALESTINIAN FILMMAKER’S COLLECTIVE

The Palestinian Filmmaker’s Collective is a totally independent, volunteer-based collective founded and run by filmmakers. Our goals include working with our community to screen films, share our technical and artistic skills, help make Palestinian films and information more widely available, create a Palestinian video library and to provide a meeting place for filmmakers and friends. The Palestinian Filmmaker’s Collective’s activities include screenings of one Palestinian film the first Saturday of every month and one International film the third Saturday of every month.

THE PROJECT

Both established as well as new Palestinian filmmakers were invited to come together in a project that would reflect the “mood” of this summer. In three minutes or less, filmmakers were restricted to using one- shot only to tell their stories. Despite the fact that Palestinians have been dispersed across the globe, with the majority of them being refugees, “Summer 2006, Palestine”, initiated by the Palestinian Film Collective, was limited to those filmmakers who live in Palestine. The result is a unique collection of short films from across Palestine, delving into the personal, the political, and the poetic – the spirit of a people struggling for freedom.

New forms of digital programmes delivery to end users are emerging on the entertainment and information market. In parallel with the traditional television, theatre and video networks, content delivery through mobile phones and broadband connections will be launched by telecommunication operators, ISP and digital publishers. This push for technological innovation will probably bring about new editorial paradigms and business models, especially in the audiovisual industry, like it did in the music industry a few yeas ago. For audiovisual rights holders and content providers these changes may favour a market extension, but also stimulate a shift to a more competitive scenario where the growth of both supply and demand of audiovisual products and services will certainly alter the power balance between an increased number of actors. The digital value chain may deeply differ from the analogical one, and the significance of some key marketing factors, like exclusivity or media chronology, will surely decline.

The ambition of this year’s Cinéma Tout Ecran seminar is precisely this one: to bring at the same table all the different actors involved in the digital restructuring of the audiovisual content market, coming from Switzerland as well as from other EU countries; and try to find common objectives and joint solutions to reach them

The seminar will address the following issues:

Technological framework and new delivery platforms New editorial paradigms and new economic models

Dialogue between existing and new actors of the audiovisual industry Evaluation of demand, supply strategies and development plans

Saturday, 4 November 2006 International Seminar CAN CRITICS KILL OR SAVE A FILM? Seminar proposed by the FIPRESCI

Venue: Salle Fonction:Cinéma Schedule: 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Maison des Arts du Grütli, 16 rue du Général Dufour, Geneva Languages: French and English

Speakers:

Michel Buhler, distributor, Agora Films, Switzerland Jean Roy, journalist and film critic, L'Humanité, France Nicole Hess, journalist and film critic, Switzerland Patrick Quinet, producer, Artemis Productions, Belgium Patrick Grandperret, film director, France (member of the International Jury 2006) Mariano Morace, journalist, Switzerland (member of the FIPRESCI Jury 2006) Gabriele Barrera, journalist and film critic, Italy (member of the FIPRESCI Jury 2006) France Hatron, journalist and screenwriter, France (member of the FIPRESCI Jury 2006)

Can the critics truly be determining in a film’s commercial career? To what extent does the critics and the press’s support or dismissal h ave a re al influence on a film’s distribution or box-office results? Critical reception seems to be especially significant in the case of auteur films, which are much more fragile in their relationship with the market. We will discuss about this ambivalent relationship that alternately places the critic in the position of a film’s main ally and worst enemy, through the experiences of those who criticize and those who are criticized. Does the audience actually listen to the critics’ opinion when they choose a film? Do distributors consider critical reception when they take a chance on smaller films? These are the questions we will try to answer during this round table.

On Friday, 3 November, Cinéma Tout Ecran will honor Swiss films with a meeting between professionals debating on the production, creation and delivery of Swiss audiovisual works. 21. VERTICALIMAGE

Verticalimage: f. n. - 2005, an assembling between “vertical” and “image”. The verticalimage is an image shot with the camera moved at an angle of 900, then projected onto a screen with vertical proportions.

Verticalimage’s purpose is to revisit the influence of the cinematographic frame – which has always been resolutely horizontal – thought a corpus of vertical films. Following a contest launched this summer, the Fonction:Cinéma theatre will screen a series of films that have been shot and edited in vertical mode on Sunday, November 5. During this second edition of Verticalimage, the question of verticality focuses on the elements contained in the very image, and not only on the frame. Vertical movements, a falling body, scenes in lifts, a chase through ravines all intervene as elements that bring about a narrative rupture within the great films of the history of cinema. A number of extracts demonstrates this fact. Verticalimage is also a meeting point, where the spectator enjoys the opportunity of viewing the screenings non-stop and of meeting the instigators of the project on the third floor of the Maison des Arts du Grütli, Studio n°3, during the entire Festival.

PROGRAM

Tuesday at 6 p.m.: opening of Verticalimage, 3d floor, Studio n°3:

From Tuesday to Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.: non-stop screening of the Verticalimage films

Sunday, November 5, Salle Fonction:Cinéma:

1:30 p.m. “Scenes in lifts”, compilation of film extracts

2:15 p.m. screening of the verticalimage films

3:15 p.m. debate in presence of the filmmakers

All screenings are free of charge and open to all.
