Photo: Wilhelm Breuer he 25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC), which is Ttaking place at the beginning of September, has called up reinforcements. Under the aegis of the 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion, this year’s EU PVSEC is being held to- gether with the 36th US IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference and the 20th Asia/Pacific PV Science and Engineering Conference. It is therefore no surprise that the conference once again promises to outdo Luxor high-quality solar itself in terms of superlatives: 4,500 delegates are expected to discuss the latest developments and cells with an efficiency trends at the conference, which will be holding more of > 17 % and positive than 1,600 specialist talks. Last year, there were around 1,300 lectures and almost 4,000 delegates. power tolerance The lectures are divided into six conference cate- peaking up gories: Advanced , Wafer-Based Silicon Solar Cells, Thin-Film Solar Cells, Components, PV to + 6.5 Wp! Systems and Large Scale Deployment. A highlight of the conference will be the awarding of the 18th European Becquerel Prize, which is con- ferred for outstanding contributions to the develop- ment of photovoltaic solar energy. The award has been named after French physician Alexandre Edmond Becquerel, who discovered the photovoltaic effect in 1839. Last year, the prize went to Alexander Bett from Fraunhofer ISE for his contribution to devel- oping concentrator solar cells. The trade fair has also grown again: 950 exhibi- tors from more than 100 countries are expected at the trade fair, which will cover an area of 80,000 m2. Maschinenbau Gerold GmbH has expanded its prod- uct range this summer with the HMA system, which can be used to seal the edges of thin-film modules with liquid butyl. Although butyl tape is normally de- ployed for this, Gerold claims that using liquid butyl improves the quality of the sealing. For example, the edge sharpness and application preciseness is great- er relative to adhesive tape. Less material is also used than with tape, as there is no waste material and liners are no longer needed. Instead, the liquid butyl can be delivered in comparably cheap vessels. Depending on the throughput, one or two dispensers are deployed that apply the butyl to the module edges, achieving cycle times of between 25 and 60 seconds per module. The HMA system can be expanded by also cutting and inserting films in the butyl frames. As the third production stage, the HMA system is also able to combine glass-glass modules. This increases the process security of the machines. The individual trays are sep- arated to enable the laminator to also operate when not fully loaded. At PVSEC, Tyco Electronics is presenting its new, medium-sized four-rail junction box for solar module foil connections. Thanks to its low profile of just un- der 13 mm, the compact junction box can be easily mounted to the rear side of solar modules using sili- con adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape. The flat construction has been achieved using surface mount- ed device (SMD) diodes, which are mounted on very wide internal power rails. With its decentralised two-rail junction box, Tyco offers an interesting alternative to the standard type of centralised junction boxes normally used. With this concept, two junction boxes are positioned in sepa- rate corners of the solar module with an additional box in the centre. Compared with the centralised junction boxes commonly used at the moment, the decentralised design requires 50 % less jumper cable to connect to the next solar module as shorter cross connections can be used. Both products accord with the IEC 61215 ed.2 (VDE V0126-5) specification. Booth L3/H2/D43

As German Intego GmbH from Erlangen emphasizes, microcrack detection is an important tool for wafer, cell and module production. The company introduces the Taurus Cell system for automatic detection of cracks in single wafers and cells. A similar technol ogy, working on stacks of wafers and cells, has al- ready been shown at the Photovoltaic Technology Show in April this year. According to the producer, Taurus Cell works contact-free and generates images of cells which are suitable for automatic error detec- tion. Thus, results are not disturbed by metallization and the natural grain structure. They can be present- ed on an operator monitor, where the user can change system parameters such as minimal error size, super- vise inspection results, and handle external signals.

According to Voltwerk, the Photo: Voltwerk VS 5 hybrid system could see the coincidence in time of photovoltaic electricity generation and its usage in a 4-person household increase from 30 % to about 70 % compared to a conventional PV system. During the summer months, a 100 % independence from the public electricity grid could be achieved. The VS 5 hy- brid is to hit the market in the first half of 2011. Voltwerk will also be presenting their string in- verter series VS in Valencia, which has already re- ceived the “red dot award” for design. In the area of large-scale systems, the Hamburg company will talk about the new central inverter station. The complete- ly pre-installed station is available in the perform- ance classes 400 to 1,200 kW. Booth L3/H1/A8

against the module. Customisation is possible to meet individual requirements, for example regarding contact distances or cable cross-sections. The junc- tion box is designed for thin-film modules and for crystalline modules with an adequate output. The DC connector helps the installers during in- stallation. It is supplied pre-assembled, additional parts or special tools are not required. It is suitable for conductors with a diameter of up to 6 mm2. The conductors are inserted into the spring cage connec- tion, which is then locked and the screws are tight- ened. The connector meets the requirements of DIN EN 50521 and protection class IP68. There are new mounting systems from Mounting Systems GmbH from Germany to be seen. Mounting Systems have given their ground-mounting system Sigma a new mounting rail. Its shape is reminiscent of the Greek letter Pi (π) – so it’s called the Pi-rail. These profiles are known from the classical structur- al engineering of large house and hall roofs. The ben- efits: less material usage and lower costs while main- taining higher stability and a larger span. The solar modules – whether framed or laminated – can be easily snapped into the Pi-rail without having to drill or use screws. To achieve this, Mounting Systems designed a specifically shaped adapter. Mounting Systems have filed a patent application for their Pi- rail. The other features of the Sigma system remain unchanged. It is mounted on pile-driven foundations and can compensate up to 10° differences in height in the terrain due to its flexible base rails and the height-adjustable adapter. Booth L3/H1/A9

EnWi-Etec will present two new charging stations for electric cars at the EU PVSEC. The E-Tower is designed for use on public roads and for company cars. It rec- ognises its registered users via an RFID card which is looked up in its database. It is available with different connector systems. Currently up to 32 A charging cur- rent is possible, in future it should range up to 63 A. For the private garage, EnWi-Etec offer the E-box – a wall-mounted charger with up to two charging connections. Booth L3/H2/B13

The Spanish manufacturer Atersa will present the CSP 12 1kV, a wiring box, that enables the grouping of series of PV modules with protections and current supervision for each series. It has inputs for 12 series of panels of up to 10 A and 1,000 VDC each. The input series may have a cable cross sectional area of 4 to 10 mm2. The cross section of the output cable to the inverter can range from 35 to 120 mm2. The device has an RS485 output for data and alarms that can send information over a distance of up to 1,000 m. The alarm output goes over a potential free relay.
