Asian Pacific American Heritage Month takes place May 1 – May 30

Saturday, April 27 - Staff members and parent volunteers from Jo Mackey Academy of Leadership and Global Communication will be working to improve the home of a North resident in honor of National Rebuilding Day. This special event, taking place from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., is sponsored by Rebuilding Together Southern , a local non-profit organization providing free home repair to low income elderly Southern Nevada residents. National Rebuilding Day is held annually on the last Saturday in April. More than 1,200 volunteers will donate their time and money to repair 17 homes in Las Vegas. The house Mackey staff will be helping to repair is located at 2617 N. Bruce St., North Las Vegas.

Saturday, April 27 - Northwest Career and Technical Academy (NWCTA) will host its 6th Annual NWCTA Scholarship Golf Tournament at Highland Falls Golf Course. For details, call David Philippi at 799-4640, ext. 4305.

Saturday, April 27- UNLV will host a Microsoft Achieve 2013: EduTech Family Summit. The event, set for 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Student Union, will focus on ways to support students in their quest for academic and career success through the use of innovative technology. Sunday, April 28 - Communities in Schools of Nevada will hold its "Couture for Causes" from noon- 4 p.m. One hundred percent of proceeds go to Communities in Schools of Nevada. For details call 770-7611 or visit http://www.coutureforcauses.org/#/couture0.

Monday, April 29 - The annual Western Association of College Admissions Counseling College Fair will be held 7- 9 p.m. in the Las Vegas Academy gymnasium. Pre-fair workshops will be held from 5 - 6:30 p.m. More than 1,000 people are expected to attend this event, which is free and open to all CCSD and private school students and parents. Southwest Career and Technical Academy student Jessica Wolf, 17, has been elected post-secondary vice president for the Nevada chapter of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). Wolf competed in the HOSA Nevada State competition March 18-20, 2013 in Reno, and won gold for the community emergency response team. She will go to Nashville this summer to compete and represent Nevada at the national competition. The college- bound honors student has been accepted to the nursing program at UNLV.

As reported by Yahoo News, Advanced Technologies Academy is Nevada’s best high school, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Las Vegas High School senior Jay Mattox has been selected for the City of Las Vegas 2012-13 All Star Football Team, which will play in June 2013. He is ranked at #17 nationally for his kicking, and was recently highlighted by KLAS-TV as a “Future Star of Tomorrow.” Additionally, he has received three “Coaches Choice” awards for his region and was named Nevada All State Punter for 2012. This outstanding student has received a full ride scholarship to the University of Texas El Paso and will start classes there in the fall.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) this week recognized local students who won the agency’s annual Earth Day art contest. The winners were Rudy Amaya of Roy Martin Middle School and Jessica Judd of Las Vegas Academy. More than 300 students in grades 6-12 from 17 area schools took part in the contest, which was sponsored by the RTC and Vector Media. Students were asked to create and submit artwork that celebrates Earth Day and the RTC’s sustainability initiative.

Senior students from Advanced Technologies Academy held court during a mock trial on Wednesday, April 24, at the at the Eighth Judicial District Court, in the Regional Justice Center. Students from the Legal Studies program served as attorneys in the case, while students from the business management and administration, architectural drafting and design, and engineering programs served as expert witnesses, defendants or jurors. Members of the Advanced Technologies Academy advisory board also helped facilitate the trial and take part in the jury. The case was heard before District Court Judge Joanna Kishner. This trial serves as the culminating event for the 2012-2013 senior cross-curricular capstone project.
