The home of the Sephardi community since 1656 Hello and WELCOME I am delighted to present to the community our new autumn programme. With it we not only present the many exciting events planned for the coming season, but also the debut of our exciting rebranding including our new name, look and logo.

The S&P Sephardi Community has had a wonderful year of growth and development and the coming year will only build on the accomplishments.

The High Holy Days bring with them a sense of awe and reverence as we come together to connect to G-d, our identity, and to think about our past and future. They bring a profound sense of community as we see our synagogues full and we sit with friends and family, engaging in our prayers and traditions.

Thankfully, the vibrancy of the community continues beyond Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur and the year will be filled with lovely opportunities for us to learn, grow and share together. It is on these days that we meditate on all aspects of our lives and how we wish to live them. Integral to our lives are the WHAT’S INSIDE relationships and communal bonds that we have and that we wish to build. Our community synagogues and events are at the heart of our unity and growth as a people. HIGH HOLY DAYS INFORMATION // 4 With our new look come new people committed to helping us with our progress. Rosh HaShanah begins a New Year, the opportunity for a fresh start. The hope embedded in a fresh start is the hope of doing better. CHORAL SERVICE Exactly how we do better is deeply personal. For some people, it means saying sorry to people around us. For other people the emphasis is on saying sorry to G-d, and promising to obey his laws more carefully. As a Rabbi, I AND DINNER WITH hope it means both. My key message is to suggest how best you can make a Jewish fresh start. I cannot give a precise recipe, but I can CHIEF RABBI list the ingredients. It was said by the writer Chaim Bermant, that Jews are not “The People of the Book” as much as “The People of the Cook Book”, so I am confident you will know what to make of my words.

Many people feel they are failing as Jews, because they obey some laws but not necessarily every law, or at least every law every time. Of course in an ideal world we should obey every law, but I come from a realistic school of The Choral Service is beautiful and elaborate, Rabbinic thought. unique to both Shabbat Bereshit and to our 2000 years ago, Rabbi Hillel the Elder was challenged to identify the essence of Jewish teaching. He picked out brotherly love. A non-Jew challenged another sage, Rabbi Shammai, to explain the Torah while the man stood on Spanish and Portuguese Congregation. The one foot. Shammai dismissed the man, but Hillel took up the challenge, saying “What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Law; the rest is explanation.” service will be led by Adam Musikant and the Of course, this story is not really about explaining the Torah to non-Jews—it is about explaining the Torah to Jews. choir followed by dinner. For those that cannot do everything, it teaches at least where to begin, and still acquit ourselves with honour.

Even achieving this Jewish minimum is very hard work, so when can we rest? Rabbi Tarfon gave his famous answer in moving and poetic terms. Rabbi Tarfon said “The day is short, the work is great, Friday 9th October the workers are idle, the reward is great, and the Master is pressing... You are not obliged to complete the work, but neither are you free to avoid it completely.” Service starts 6:00pm

None of us can complete G-d’s work, but we must all do at least some—we must all do what we can. And in doing so, we grow close to one another and closer to G-d. Please book online at sephardi.org.uk Rabbi Israel Elia LAUDERDALE ROAD 12 13 LAUDERDALE ROAD LAUDERDALE ROAD EVENTS EVENTS

In certain religions there is a contradiction between physicality and spirituality. Religious life is a spiritual one and any involvement in aspects of the physical world is looked down upon and in certain areas even forbidden.

A message from Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis

Chanukah and Purim are twin festivals, with much in common. Both recall occasions in our history when Jewish life was threatened. On both, it is permissible to work and engage in creative activity, unlike Shabbat and Yom Tov. On both, we engage in ‘Pirsum Hanes’ – the publicising of a miracle. On Purim we do this by reading the Megillah and on Chanukah by kindling the Menorah, and on both we read the Torah and say the ‘Al Hanissim’ prayer in our services and in Birkat Hamazon. However, there are two significant differences between the two from which we can derive much inspiration. CALENDAR Firstly, on Purim there is a mitzvah to sit down to a seudah, a festive meal. On Chanukah, whilst there are many customs relating to food, there is no obligation to have a seudah. Why this difference? On Purim, the threat to us was physical. Haman sought to annihilate every Jewish man, woman and child. Consequently, we celebrate with the very physical act of enjoying a meal. On Chanukah, however, the primary threat from the Greeks was to tempt us away from Hashem and His Torah. The victory, therefore, was ultimately a spiritual BEVIS MARKS SYNAGOGUE one and thus we celebrate with the kindling of lights. LAUDERDALE ROAD SYNAGOGUE Secondly, on Purim our celebration tends to be community-orientated. While it is permissible to read the Megillah in private, we prefer to hear it being read in Synagogue and we try to enjoy our seudah with friends from around the community. On Chanukah, however, our primary celebration is with family WEMBLEY SYNAGOGUE members in our homes.

Haman sought to kill all Jews simply because they were Jewish and thus on Purim GREATER COMMUNITY we celebrate in the midst of our people.
