Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced in a press conference on Thursday that the current mask ordinance in the state would be extended through Friday, Dec. 11. This order was set to expire on Sunday, Nov. 8.

“I must admit, when we issued that first state of emergency back in March, most of us had hoped that we would be having to worry about COVID in November,” said Ivey. “Yet, here we are, eight months later, and our state, our nation and our world is still grappling with how to keep you safe, but at the same time adhering to those who have jobs can keep on working and those businesses that have been sidelined can get back to work sooner rather than later.”

Ivey said that the disease has disrupted the daily lives of those who live in the state in significant ways, explaining that more than 3,000 Alabamians have died from “this deadly virus.”

1/2 “While obviously some folks are more susceptible to COVID-19 than others are due to age and preexisting conditions, no one is immune, as we are all capable of contracting this virus,” said Ivey.

Ivey cites the current flu season for being the reason behind this decision, saying that this season alongside COVID-19 is a “deadly mix.” She also tells the people of Alabama that they are listening to them and taking their concerns into consideration.

“Sooner rather than later, the people of Alabama will be allowed to make the decision for themselves whether they wear the masks or not,” she said.

Ivey also announced that there would be some relaxations for the order, as businesses are now allowed to return to normal occupancy rates, so long as they continue to abide by sanitation and social distancing protocols provided by the Center for Disease Control.

“Simply put, this should be welcomed news as we get ready for the upcoming holiday season, which is the bread and butter for retail, and especially for our locally owned small businesses,” she said. “You cannot have a life without a livelihood.”

Scott Harris, the state’s health officer, said the state is around 200,000 positive cases of the virus in Alabama, which is approximately four percent of the state’s total population. He also said that the positive case rate is approximately 10 percent of all cases.

Currently, there are 17 active cases at Jacksonville State, based on JSU’s COVID dashboard. There have been 383 positive cases over the past two weeks in Calhoun County, and 38 are currently hospitalized in the county with COVID-19.

Ivey also discussed the events of the recent election, saying that Americans turned out “in record numbers” to cast their votes.

“This expression of freedom and personal responsibility is a hallmark that distinguishes the United States from many other countries around the world,” she said.

She asks the people of the state to look for opportunities to bring our country together moving forward to bring them back together. This includes “finding common ground” and “meeting people in the middle,” according to Ivey.

“This does not mean that you have to compromise your values or your morals.” she said. “But the bottom line is that we’ve got too many big things to do here in the coming weeks that does not need to get sidetracked. The sooner that we can start coming back together, the quicker our country will get back on the path that it was on before COVID-19.”

2/2 ‘After We Collided’ takes over theaters nationwide

The sequel “After We Collided” — based on the After book series — recently made its debut in theaters nationwide on Oct. 23. The After book series was first released on Wattpad, which is a platform available to show off your writing skills, not to mention the site offers thousands of books to read.

Wattpad is where Anna Todd, author of the After series began her incredible career. According to the Huffington Post, Todd gained over a billion reads on the beloved After series alone.

The popularity of this series has grown exponentially since the movie “After” was created in honor of the first book in the series. The first movie gained 69.7 million USD in box office, and the sequel is on its way to exceeding that. Currently, it’s made 47.8 million USD in box office, and it will continue to grow.

1/2 The storyline follows a young, ambitious rule-follower Tessa Young starting her journey into adulthood at a university. She leaves behind a high school boyfriend and her mother, both who are incredibly overprotective and manipulative. As she begins to find her independence she suffers from guilt and her own mind, all of the thoughts relating back to her past life.

While attending the university she stumbles upon Hardin Scott who is the complete opposite of her. Everything she is, he’s not. He’s a rule breaker, a bad boy, but vulnerable at heart with a lot of baggage he can’t seem to move past.

The love story emerges in the first film and carries on into the second. A breakup is involved as well as brutal arguments, fights, and disagreements. The second film kicks off with Tessa ignoring her swirling thoughts on the breakup and heading off to start a new publishing internship. Hardin is completely broken and devastated with himself for how things played out, but like magnets, they find themselves attached to each other soon enough.

A beautiful love story unfolds filled with tragedy and victorious romance that only comes along once in a lifetime.

There is an element that is added — a new character develops within the plot — Dylan Sprouse. Dylan Sprouse, famous from his role off “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,” took on the role as Trevor. Trevor is a coworker of Tessa’s at her new job and is obviously very smitten with her. This adds an incredible amount of tension and jealousy to the plot. It’s a strong development and serves well as one of the biggest side-plots of the movie.

Though this movie is primarily categorized as a chick-flick, humor is sprinkled within to help ease the boredom of boyfriends who are forced to sit through the movie. This movie adds much more depth to the series and is really able to bring the story to life. The characters have the chemistry necessary to provide audiences with an accurate representation of the infamous book series.

This movie is highly recommended to anyone who is a sucker for romance, and a little bit of humor. 10/10.

2/2 Review: drops album ‘Positions’

jsuchanticleer.com/2020/11/05/review-ariana-grande-drops-album-positions/

Anna Gurganus, Correspondent

Early last Friday morning, pop star Ariana Grande released a new album entitled “Positions.” Grande has achieved an R&B sound accompanied by bold and straight-forward lyrics.

The album has fourteen songs:

1. Shut Up: Irony is present here as Grande sings the sassy lyrics of “Shut Up” in a sweet, pretty melody. The song has a nice tune and good harmony. 2. 34+35: This song is blunt and to the point. There is no question what is in her mind. 3. Motive: Doja Cat joins Grande in singing this one. The song actually teaches a good lesson: know what kind of person you are getting into a relationship with and know what they are really after. 4. Just like Magic: Grande accomplished a magical-sounding background to go with her shallow, egotistical lyrics.

1/2 5. Off the Table: This song features . Grande creatively uses the phrase “off the table” to try to convince the guy to let her love him. 6. Six Thirty: This song has a very creative chorus. It uses the same three-word phrase seven times. Is that the best they could come up with? 7. Safety Net: This is a nice duet Grande sings with Ty Dollar $ign. 8. My Hair: This song interestingly has bits of classic music styles thrown into the mix. There are some jazzy sounds, Motown styles, and an overall oldies vibe. 9. Nasty: Here is another song that is direct and says exactly what is on Grande’s mind. The song does, however, start with a good beat that kept my head nodding. 10. West Side: This one is pretty monotonous. Nothing exciting happens and it is very short. 11. Love Language: As in many of these songs, Grande sings with a very soft voice which contrasts with some of her previous music. This particular one is a little more upbeat and busy. 12. Positions: In this song Grande actually gets past her sexual desires and sings some meaningful lyrics about love and loyalty. 13. Obvious: Grande repeatedly asks, “Could I be more obvious?” The answer to that in all of these songs is no. As I have already pointed out, throughout this entire album Grande is extremely obvious. 14. POV: This song is calm and soothing. It sounds like something that would be listened to to help someone fall asleep. The lyrics are surprisingly sweet, honest, and thought-provoking.

Overall, Grande’s new album is lacking. Music-wise there is no originality from song to song. Once you hit play on the first song you hear the same sound for 41 minutes. The music gets tedious as none of the songs seem to have any climax.

As for the lyrics, there are some creative and thoughtful lines. However, like the music, there is not very much diversity. Most of the songs are about the same thing.

Throughout the album, Grande uses more sophisticated-sounding music to sing vulgar and distasteful lyrics. In my opinion, Grande’s music has gone downhill from previous albums.

2/2 SGA Student Senate makes two appointments

The Jacksonville State University Student Senate on Monday unanimously appointed two new members to two separate branches of the Student Government Association.

The Senate first adopted Senate Bill 30, welcoming Freshman De’Onta Bush as the Vice President of the Student Activities Council for the 2020-2021 school year.

“I’ve always loved helping people feel like they are welcome and wanted,” said Bush after the appointment. “I love meeting new people and I look forward to what the Student Activities Council has in store for this year.”

In addition, the Senate passed Senate Bill 31 which appointed the Senate’s previous Vice President of Public Relations during the 2019-2020 year, Kate Seibert, as a Student Senator.

Being appointed at this time in the year, Seibert said that she “missed working with students and working alongside students.” The amendment passed after many Senators agreed that Seibert would be an exceptional appointment to the Senate and Seibert was 1/2 sworn in that night.

Other business:

SGA President Jerod Sharp relayed information from the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees which took place two weeks ago.

Sharp explained that the Board of Trustees adopted the “intent of the resolution” to rename the Bibb Graves Administrative building on Jacksonville State University’s campus.

“The Board of Trustees will be taking action to change the name of Bibb Graves Hall,” said Sharp. “I am not sure what these actions or the process of these actions will look like as of right now.”

Sharp continues to state that the plans and processing behind these actions are being considered and looked into. Sharp also stated that state legislation would apply to this change and therefore would take time.

The SGA President also gave an update on the Student Taskforce at JSU. The taskforce will be meeting with chair, Dean Stone, of the Red Tape Sub Committee from the Enrollment Management Committee this week.

“This committee was put together to identify administrative barriers that students may be facing,” said Sharp.

2/2 OPINION: Best coffee shops in the area to add to your must-try list

If you were to mention to a friend that you’d like to get coffee, many locals would most likely think Starbucks in Oxford.

The mega chain’s two or three stores in a 40-mile radius gets so much business the long lines snake around the drive-throughs into the street or into the Target store fronts. On days they’re forced to shut down due to pandemic precautions, there’s almost instantly a reaction from the locals on social media asking what’s the deal.

Getting a quick cup or even sitting down and enjoying the deliciously warm beverage that isn’t the coffee giant can prove to be a bit difficult.

Any Jacksonville local would tell you Java Jolt. Only, the raging and unforgiving toll that COVID-19 has taken on the economy has seen its doors to close for good.

1/2 Here’s a few suggestions on where to get a decent cup, and possibly some good environment to go with it.

Panera Bread in Oxford Ala. While Panera doesn’t have a typical coffee shop feel and is more known as an eatery, their coffees and teas have a taste that rivals the big dogs in both flavor and price. With many of the same favorites such as caramel macchiato and vanilla cold brew, as well as their own spins like the iced Madagascar vanilla latte, their menu options ensure you’ll find something you love.

Pell City Coffee Company in Pell City, Ala. This place has everything you look for in that ideal coffee shop: environment, great prices, and great tasting coffee. They have a nice sized menu, a really friendly staff, and comfy seating that is conducive to a nice conversation or reading a book.

Dunkin Donuts in Oxford, Ala. While the coffee at Dunkin could be better in the flavor department, it’s drinkable when you need your caffeine fix in a pinch. There’s usually no line and a drive-through for when you need to get somewhere quickly.

Southern Girl Coffee Company in Oxford, Ala. This cozy little camper turned coffee shop is nestled in the park across from the Terrortorium and The First Baptist Church of Oxford downtown. String lights illuminate the patio in a cozy backyard style setting as the aroma of fresh ground coffee beans fill the air. Comfortable fall atmosphere is in no short supply as patrons aware of the little shop patiently wait for their surprisingly delicious brew. With menu options such as the Brown Sugar Cinnamon Latte and Bergamot Fog Tea, their coffee can rival some of the more upscale city coffee shops but right in our own backyard.

If you’re willing to drive the extra few miles from campus to get to Gadsden, there are quite a few really great coffee shops in that area: Kristy Kreme, Joe Muggs, The Coffee Bar and Union Jack Cafe to name a few. All of which have really great coffee and a number of them with yummy bakery treats.

2/2 JSU men’s basketball picks new assistant coach, operations coordinator

Jacksonville State men’s basketball coach Ray Harper announced two changes to his staff: Tysor Anderson has been promoted to assistant coach and Dennan Morrow is the Gamecocks’ new coordinator of basketball operations.

“Ty’s ready for this step,” said Harper. “He’s going to work extremely hard. I think he’s a relationship guy, I think he’ll do a great job with our guys and also on the recruiting trail. Dennan is just a basketball junkie. His dad was a high school coach, he understands the game. I think he’s got a chance to be a star.”

Harper explained that there are a lot of new staff and players adapting to the team’s “system” and learning how to play together.

“We’ve had a great group up to this point and I can’t wait to get started playing other people,” he said.

1/2 Anderson said that he was excited to get back into the coaching realm.

“I’m a basketball coach,” said Anderson. “I’m glad to be in a basketball coach’s role. Working with our guys day in and day out, with individuals at practice, in the film room; that’s the stuff I’m most excited about on a daily basis.” Anderson is the grandson of coaching legend Charles “Lefty” Driesell, who was the fourth- winningest NCAA Division I men’s basketball coach when he retired in 2003 after leading the basketball programs of Davidson College, the University of Maryland, James Madison University and Georgia State University.

“Growing up around my granddad and seeing him work from the time that I was a little kid, the biggest thing I got from him was his work ethic,” said Anderson. “Nobody ever outworked him. He used to always say ‘the harder I work, the luckier I get.’”

COVID-19 has affected the team in many ways, and Anderson has recognized that when judging the upcoming season.

“Our success is always focused on wins or losses, but when you don’t know how many games you’re going to play, we’ve got to be able to take on the daily challenges,” he said. “This year, more than any year, it’s important that we as a coaching staff and as a program really focus in on what we’re doing day-to-day and finding solace in the small victories every day.”

Morrow, the new coordinator of basketball operations, said he was “very fortunate and excited at the same time to be able to join a staff with Coach Harper.”

“Obviously a really successful coach at multiple satops and I’m just very fortunate to be able to learn from him and hopefully be able to contribute to a little more future success,” said Morrow.

Morrow noted that 2020 scheduling is “kind of in limbo right now.”

“Road trips will be a smaller group that we’re traveling with and we will have stronger precautions on the road,” said Morrow. “Most of our stuff will be done in the hotel or in the gym, there won’t be too much outside activity other than at those two spots.”

“Hopefully we can bring a championship to Jacksonville,” he said. “It should be a fun and exciting year.”

2/2 JSU Organization Spotlight: International House

jsuchanticleer.com/2020/11/05/jsu-organization-spotlight-international-house/

November 5, 2020

Breanna Hill, Features Editor

The International House became part of Jacksonville State University campus and the community during the late 90s.

An international student from Nepal partnered with an American student in hopes of fostering a community for the international students. Doing so was to help the students who were away from their home and family feel more comfortable at the university. The sole purpose of the organization is to create a bond between all students and help familiarize all with each other’s cultures.

The International House is heavily involved with the surrounding community and with the university itself. Recently, they put together an event called “Coffee Break” during Hispanic Heritage Week. Mexican bread and coffee was served from different Latin and Hispanic countries. The community was able to enjoy the incredible tasting experience while simultaneously learning more about different cultures that brought forth the unique flavors at the event.

1/2 On a daily basis, the organization plans, organizes and prepares events that they put on. The International House members also make it a priority to post on their organization’s social media platforms to keep members and the rest of the university’s students up to date with upcoming events and other shareworthy news.

Through COVID-19, the International House students are adjusting as best they can and continuing to support the university and the community by putting on various events.

“We saw a quick shift in the world due to the pandemic,” said Sushant Chhetry, the president of the International Student Organization.

Over the summer, students who are involved with the organization met many times to discuss the changes that would be put in place when classes began for the fall semester and they were able to form a plan of action. The plan of action includes taking advantage of the virtual space and emphasizing heavily on virtual events held on various platforms. They have also been conducting meetings using these platforms as well.

There are a total of 16 active members made up of international and American students. All of the active members are considered “Friends of ISO.”

Getting involved with the International House can be done in a couple of ways. If you want to be an active member, you must pay certain dues to our treasurer. If you choose not to become an active member, you can still attend events that the ISO put on. Though it should be known that becoming a member means additional perks such as attending private events, discounts and more.

ISO meeting times and places are currently depending on the university’s policy for organization regarding the pandemic. Typically, the meetings are done on either the front lawn of the International House or they are held virtually on Microsoft Teams.

“Our main goal as an organization is to highlight the beauty in diversity present here at JSU,” said Chhetry.

The organization has students from all over who are eager to share their cultural backgrounds and traditions, and the organization serves as a platform for them to do just that.

“Even though the organization has ‘international students’ in its name, it is also a great place for American students to come and make friends and experience cultures from different countries as well as exchange their American culture with their international friends,” said Chhetry.

The International House members pride themselves in staying true to their motto: “Many cultures, one voice.”

2/2 Red Rooster Funtime Eatery celebrates grand re- opening

Scott Leathrum, Correspondent

The Red Rooster Funtime Eatery held their grand reopening event on Monday, Nov. 2.

Red Rooster originally opened in January after JSU purchased the building from Momma Goldberg’s to add a new off-campus dining option.

Due to COVID-19 and the shutdown of the university in the spring, a grand opening was never held. So, the event was scheduled for fall to coincide with the reopening of campus.

“We’re doing well and it’s great to see students excited to come in,” one employee said.

The new dining option offers sandwiches similar to those that Momma Goldberg’s had offered, as well as pizzas. A full sized pizza oven was installed in the building to accommodate the new menu option.

Red Rooster employees said they are excited to be working with the university and Sodexo — the food services and management company JSU contracts with — to bring the new dining options to students.

1/2 At the event, the first 100 people who bought a pizza were given a free JSU t-shirt and soft drink. Cocky, JSU’s beloved mascot, attended the event at both lunch and dinner.

2/2
