India's RuPay digital payments system was linked up with Singapore's 33-year old Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS). The move will enable RuPay users to make payments at all of NETS acceptance points across Singapore. BRICS NATIONS REAFFIRM NEED FOR COMPREHENSIVE REFORM OF UN BRICS nations have reaffirmed the need for a comprehensive reform of the UN, including its Security Council, to make it more effective and efficient. The grouping stressed the need to increase the representation of the developing countries so that UNSC can adequately respond to global challenges. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is on a five-day visit to South Africa, attended the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting in Pretoria. After the meeting, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa recalled the 2005 World Summit Outcome document and reaffirmed the need for a comprehensive reform of the UN. BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Originally the first four were grouped as "BRIC" (or "the BRICs"), before the induction of South Africa in 2010. The BRICS members are known for their significant influence on regional affairs; all are members of G20. Since 2009, the BRICS nations have met annually at formal summits. China hosted the 9th BRICS summit in Xiamen on September 2017, while South Africa will do so for the 10th BRICS summit on July 2018. The term does not include countries such as South Korea, Mexico and Turkey for which other acronyms and group associations were later created. FRENCH SWIMMER BEGINS RECORD PACIFIC CROSSING ATTEMPT A French swimmer set off from Japan aiming to become the first person to swim across the Pacific Ocean. Ben Lecomte will swim for eight hours a day for more than six months as he heads towards the US west coast. He is hoping to raise awareness for climate change.
