La Salle University is a liberal arts institution which combines the best of all educational worlds. With 3300 men and women attending classes, the university offers a pleasant en- vironment within close proximity to Philadelphia's cultural, social, and historic centers.

Founded by the Brothers of Chris- tian Schools, La Salle is named for St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers. The institution, which began as a one-building acad- emy in city Philadelphia, is on an 85-acre, 36-building campus in Philadelphia's Germantown section. The La Salle day and evening faculty numbers 400 full and part- time, with 45 different programs of study offered in which to major. With a student-faculty ratio of 15-1 and an average class size of 21, students can be assured of as much personal guidance as needed from faculty members. This commitment to the in- dividual has always been a major tenet of the Christian Brothers' goals for La Salle. La Salle's curriculum requires the completion of 120 credits, but allows wide flexibility in choosing courses. LA SALLE UNIVERSITY HEAD BASKETBALL COACH BILL "SPEEDY" MORRIS

Bill "Speedy" Morris begins his third season as head coach for the Explorers. Success has been the rule since Morris has come to La Salle. Morris took his first Explorers team to a 20-1 record finishing as finalists in the 1987 NIT. His 1987-88 squad not only compiled a better record at 24-10, but they went one step beyond with a 14-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record and sweeping through the league's post season tourna- ment to the automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament.

In the 1988 NCAA Tournament, La Salle travelled to Notre

Dame, IN, to face Kansas State in first round action. The Wildcats beat the Explorers 66-53, closing one of the school's most ex- citing seasons to date.

Because of La Salle's spectacular regular season and post- season play in the conference tournament, Morris was named 1988 MAAC Coach-of-the-Year. Along with the impressive

season record, Morris' team also captured first place in the Con-

necticut Bank & Trust Invitational in Hartford, CT.

Morris first gained recognition as a basketball coach at Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia. In 14 seasons at Roman, Morris tallied 347 wins against only 82 losses. Roman won one Philadelphia City Championship; six titles in the Philadelphia Catholic League; two National Catholic Tournament champion- ships and had four 30-win seasons.

Morris also spent two years as head coach at The William Penn Charter School. His overall record at Penn Charter was 40-14 and Morris' 1984 Penn Charter squad won the Philadelphia Interacademic League championship for the

school's first title in 12 seasons.

Morris came to La Salle for the 1984-85 season when he replaced Kevin Gallagher as head coach of the Lady Explorer's program. Morris was the first-ever, full-time appointment to the position. He saw much the same success as he coached La Salle's women to 22 and 21 victories in 1985 and 1986, respec-

tively. His 1 986 women's team won the MAAC title and advanc- ed to the NCAA Tournament. In 1986, Morris was appointed to head up the men's program and in doing so, became the first coach in the nation to make such a switch.

A native of Philadelphia, Morris and his wife Mimi reside in Roxborough with their four children: Keith will be attending La

Salle in the fall and will play on his father's squad; Brian is a

senior at Archbishop Carroll High School; Margaret Mary is a junior at John Hallahan Catholic High School; and Christopher,

who is ten, attends St. John the Baptist School. "Speedy" Morris* Career Coaching Record

Conlin is a durable player who has started 74 consecutive

games. Conlin shot a remarkable 64.6 percent from the field in his junior season converting 144 of 223 attempts. His made field goals were just shy of the NCAA statistical requirements, other- wise he would have been among the national leaders. He has

led the team in percentage in both his sophomore and junior seasons. Conlin should set a new career field goal percent- age record, he has shot at a 58.4 percent clip over the past three

seasons. He scored in double figures in 15 games in 1988. Con-

lin opened the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Texas-San Antonio. Conlin will be counted on to provide leader-

ship as he is the only senior on the 1 989 squad. He was named co-captain along with Lionel Simmons. Conlin was the team's second leading rebounder pulling down 165 caroms. He had six

or more rebounds in 10 games including a career high 12 boards versus Princeton. As a high school senior, Conlin was the Philadelphia Catholic Player of the Year. Although Conlin led

the team in personal fouls (104), he fouled out only against BYU. Conlin shot nearly 80 percent (50-63) from the line.

Conlin committed the fewest turnovers (39) of the 1 988 La Salle starters. Barring injury, Conlin will join the Explorer's 1,000 point club, he currently has 830 career points. Missed eight games as a freshman with a stress fracture in his right thigh. Played on the Gold Medal Kossum Cup team between his sophomore and junior years. Was a rookie of the week choice twice and a member of the MAAC All-Rookie team in the '85-86 season. Conlin's older brother Chris was an Ail-American lineman at Penn State in '86 and was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. Con- lin's high school coach was Les Burke.

Buddy Donnelly drives against Dayton in the 1952 NIT Championship game.

55 La Salle in the 1988 NCAA Tournament

The goal had been set and reached. A berth in the field of 64 in the 1988 NCAA Tournament. The basketball season was a success for the .

Yet, there was still room for more glory. More recognition than an undefeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular sea- son. More honors for star forward Lionel Simmons. More ac- colades for sharp shooter Tim Legler and more assists for Rich

Tarr, the seniors who led La Salle to Southbend, IN, for a first round game with Kansas State University.

It had been five years since La Salle had played in the NCAA Tournament but basketball fever was running high on the Phil- adelphia campus. As runner-up in the 1987 NIT, La Salle's basketball resurgence had come of age with the berth in 1988 NCAA field. The Wildcats were stout with leading the Big Eight school. He scored a game high 30 points as Kansas State downed La Salle, 66-53. Simmons paced the Explorers with a double double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. "It was a great experience to make the field and play in the NCAA Tournament," La Salle Head Basketball Coach Speedy Morris said. "Our experience in the Tournament will be our motivation for 1988-89. We will be back." Kansas State moved on in to the final eight before bowing out of the Tournament. As the curtain closed on one of La Salle's most exciting sea- sons, optimism rained on the Explorers' expectations for the future.
