Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is named for a 3,324-foot peak in the , the top of which is often shrouded in ice or snow in the winter months. The impressive entrance leads visitors into a vestige of densely forested, unspoiled mountain splendor — once common throughout the . The 41,065 acres of relatively undisturbed forest contain some of the most abundant wildflowers and biologically diverse plant communities in the state. The mountainous terrain varies from an elevation of 1,340 ft. to over 3,000 ft. on 16 different mountain peaks. This entrancing resource offers visitors an opportunity to unite with nature and affords visitors space for camping, hiking, biking, fishing, birding, and education programming.

Park Mission Statement The primary mission of Frozen Head State Park & Natural Area is to protect and preserve the unique examples of natural, cultural and scenic resources and to save one of the last vestiges of undisturbed landscapes in the Cumberland Mountain region from development and land fragmentation. Management of this area will work restore and maintain the ecological integrity of the natural landscape.

3 A Letter to Educators Educators,

Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is a perfect example of a natural, historical, cultural and scenic resource. There are few state parks that offer an area as diverse and remarkable as Frozen Head. As Rangers, we strive to create a passion and desire to protect and treasure this vast resource. In an effort to achieve this goal, we would love to share our knowledge, time, and experience with you all.

Frozen Head State Park & Natural Area offers several educational opportunities by means of exciting, relatable, and hands-on experiences. Through partnering with us you will receive an experience that not only engages and educates students, but also inspires them. Our programs include:  Field Trip Programs

 Outreach Programs (Park Rangers visit you and your school-No cost.)  Custom Programs

Programs listed in this guide support many academic standards. An abbreviated standards correlation can be found under each program. Programs can be modified to fit your desired age group and academic goals.

As you review the following program opportunities, keep in mind that these are only examples of available programs. Custom programs that address your particular needs are possible for both classroom outreach and park field trips.

4 Program Reservation Steps and Guidelines Reservation Steps 1. Please reserve as far in advance as possible. There is a one month minimum for reservations. 2. If reserving by phone, please have the following ready:  At least three possible dates  Your email address, school address, phone number  The names of both the school contact and group leader (if different)

 Grade level and total number of students

 Are you a Title I school? Field Trip Sponsorship information is available upon request. 3. If reserving by email, please complete the “School Group Reservation Form” and submit to [email protected].

Program Fees Program fees are listed within the “Programs Offered” section. There is no cost for teachers. Fees should be paid in full at the Frozen Head Visitor’s Center at the time of park arrival. Payment methods accepted are cash, card, or check made payable to Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area.

Cancellation Notification of cancellation must be received 48hrs before reserved program. Programs are held rain or shine. Cancellations due to extreme weather conditions are made at the discretion of the park staff. In the event that your program is cancelled, please contact Ranger Kayley Kempton to reschedule.

Lunch If available you are invited to use one of our picnic shelters, open lawns, or picnic areas. Picnic tables are available on a first-come basis. If not reserved, shelters are also available on a first-come basis. If you would like to reserve a shelter for an additional fee, please contact the office. We also ask that you ensure all waste and discarded food goes into the trash and/or recycling bins.

Parking Parking for buses is available. Please inquire of proper bus parking prior to arrival.

5 School Programs Offered Jr Ranger Round-Up 30 minutes Cost: Free What is a Ranger? What do they do? Find out as we learn the ins and outs of all the unique and exciting things that Rangers take part in: Law enforcement, Programing, protecting and caring for the environment, exploration and adventure! Tree Walk 30—60 minutes Cost: FREE Sycamores, , Tulip Poplars, Oh My! Join us in taking a look into the complex canopies and root systems of our environment. Trees do more than provide shade. They are an integral part of any ecosystem and can tell a true story if you look close enough. Is it home to a Pileated Woodpecker? Food for our hungry deer? Chances are it is that and much more!

Waterfalls Hike 60 minutes

Cost: $2 per Student

Join us for an explorative hike to one of Frozen Head’s most popular features- Debord Falls! Nestled along Flat Fork Creek, we will explore the many ways that water alters our environment and provides life to the beautiful flowers, trees, and critters that call the area home.

On this journey, we will use seines, dip nets, and our bare hands to unearth what lurks within this ever changing ecosystem! Interpretive Loop Hike 60 minutes Cost: $2 per Student On this half mile trek, we will encounter historic Civilian Conservation Corps camps, unique rock formations, a winding and beautiful creek, as well as a multitude of enchanting pieces of history that bring Frozen Head full circle. Venture out to discover how all living things connect to make a story and how the story that we discover, creates the biologically diverse area of Frozen Head.

Nighttime Nature Ramble 60 minutes

Cost: $2 per Student

Take part in this exciting journey along the Flat Fork Walking Trail as we take in the unique examples of nightlife at Frozen Head State Park. Enchanting bioluminescence, mysterious animals, and sparkling mysteries await you on this nighttime adventure.

Prison Mine Hike 240 minutes

Cost: $5 per Student

1894 was a pivotal year for Morgan County. Prisoners, coal mines and starkly beautiful mountains - Jump back in time as we explore the past and discover how an area rich in natural resources, was utilized! Stonecipher Kelly House Tour 90 minutes

Cost: $5 per Student

In the middle of a picturesque, grassy field at the foot of the Upper Cumberland Mountain, sits the oldest standing house in Morgan County. Filled to the brim with local history and lore, this house is the picture of the American dream! Explore the grounds and house as we voyage back to discover early settler life and how American history affected a small town.

Campfire Cooking 120 minutes

Cost: $5 per Student (covers all program supply costs)

Cozy up by the crackling campfire as we reconnect with simpler times. Get hands on with fire building, safety and cooking as we enjoy a sweet warm treat that exemplifies the durability and ingenuity of Appalachian and Cumberland Plateau settlers and culture! Custom School Programs

Looking for a topic that is not mentioned in our list? We will happily work with you to create a program targeted at your specific curriculum needs. Custom school programs can focus in on subjects such as Tennessee history and geography, landforms, geologic change over time, life cycles, water cycles, sustainability, compasses and map reading, etc. The options are extensive!
