Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty.

LESSON: THE DIFFERENCE MAKER

Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of , and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 1 1:1 NKJV

1. Elkanah was unfamous, unspectacular, and unsensational. He wasn’t outstanding in any way. But when he shows up, he makes a massive impact on this world.

2. Why was Elkanah important? Who was he? What did he do? Elkanah was living in a time where there was no king in Israel which meant there was no authority, no law, nor order. Every man did what they wanted to do. There was no moral authority.

3. Elkanah: ‘El’ is a reference to God. ‘Kanah’ means to be purchased or to be possessed. Elkanah: a God purchased man or a God possessed man.

4. During this time, , the High Priest was over Israel. He was described as being fat and blind. Fat refers to the flesh being out of control and blind means that he lost his vision and his vision for God.

5. Eli was a priest but he was not God-possessed. He also had two sons, Hophni and . Both of them were corrupt in nature. The Bible says they, ‘knew not God,’ yet they were serving in the house of God. They were going through the religious rituals but they were not God-possessed.

6. The world was corrupt, the church lost its vision and the priests were corrupt. Elkanah was living in a godless, self-possessed, self-consumed, self-engrossed, self-centered, ungodly environment.

7. Elkanah had two wives, and . Peninnah had children but Hannah was barren. Peninnah would mock and scorn Hannah and she made her life miserable.

8. He loved Hannah and tried to make her life better but no matter what he did, he couldn’t make her happy because she was barren. Man can only do so much and can never take the place of God.

9. Elkanah was faithful because everything he did, he did it unto God. He was loyal and didn’t quit because of the challenges he faced. Elkanah being God-possessed meant that he had God-possessed character.

10. Elkanah was faithful to the house of God. Faithful to worship God. Faithful to bring his family to church. He was the example that kept his family’s faith in God when everything looked bad.

11. He took Hannah to church and she went to the alter. She cries out to God because she needed and answer. She needed and encounter with God. God heard her prayers and she gave birth to a baby boy. She named him Samuel.

12. Samuel later anointed to be the King of Israel where there was godly order and godly authority in the land.

13. This all happened because Samuel had a God-possessed father and a God-possessed mother. We need to get God-possessed and not self-possessed.
