BOOK OF THE MONTH: Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

The time: 1966. The place: New York City. Find yourself amongst the socialites and elites attending photographer Walker Evans’ exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. In two pictures, a man named Tinker Grey comes into view, and into the memory of the narrator, Katey Kontent. Upon seeing her old friend Grey once again, she rides her memories back to 1937, the year she and Grey met; a time that changed her life forever. Romance, tempered and fueled by fate and free will, creates a seemingly inescapable path in their lives for them to follow. Set that against the backdrop of money and privilege along with social, personal and global conflict, and you have a complex but compelling plot that at time feels like a novel of intrigue and at others a love story. The tale is reminiscent of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby, filled with sophistication, glamour, glitz, and yes, gauche behavior that makes us want to keep George Washington’s Rules of Civility handy (they’re listed in the appendix of the novel). - Colleen All Staff Picks are available through the Ocean State Libraries system
