In Confirmation class a couple of weeks ago, we were examining the second article of the Apostles Creed. As we examined who Jesus is and what He has done for us, we talked about an aspect of Jesus’ work I’d not covered before in this part of Confirmation. In truth, this topic was probably a bit above the heads of the students, but it didn’t hurt to plant the seed. The newest edition of the Catechism points out that our very pur- pose in being created, and more importantly, redeemed by Christ is to serve Him. This is profound if understood correctly. Unfortunately, our first in- stinct is to chaff under the idea that our purpose in life is to “serve.” Our ideal of individualism coupled with a resentment to being “subservient,” even to God, makes this truth hard to recognize for the beautiful thing that it is. First off, this reminds us that we do have a purpose in life, as a spe- cies and also as individuals. We do not need to seek out and “find our pur- pose” as so may spend their lives doing. Our purpose is to serve God by liv- ing THROUGH Christ and His example and love. So why is serving a posi- tive rather than a negative? When we first hear the word “serve” we assume it means to be “ordered around” and forced to do things so that God can sit back and be “lazy.” The term conjures the image of the servants doing the work and the master (God) reaping the rewards. But the truth of the situation is that not only does God give us freedom and creative licenses in how to serve Him, the benefits are not reaped by Him but by us. Our purpose in life is to be like Him. Serving Him means to model ourselves after an all loving brother, who has already given up Himself for us. Our purpose is therefore not to do His will for His benefit but for our own. Our lives have meaning because God has given them meaning, which means striving to be the per- fect creation He originally made us to be. This will not be completely achieved until we are in heaven when our service will be perfected, but “serving” still has wonderful benefits here in this world. Put another way, when we understand the absolute goodness of God, there can be no higher purpose than to spend our days striving to be “the good” that He knows we are capable of, with His Spirit inspiring ALL ABOARD!!! (sanctifying) us to be. His forgiveness rests on us when we fail to be the perfect servants we were meant to be, which happens daily for us all. Our Mark your calendars for lives belong to Him, but He graciously gifts them back to us to live out in Vacation Bible School pursuit of loving Him and others. July 19-22, 2021 The world often sees the purpose of humans (collectively and indi- vidually) as dedicated to improving things by some worldly, measurable (Continued on page 20)
