Message from our Community Impact Director

Many of you know me already as the North Woods District Executive, but with Michael Hornung assuming a more active role in the Des Plaines Valley Community I have been asked to assume the position of NWSC Community Impact Director. We have done much already to impact our community. Michael has set us on a good course for improving unit support and establishing a longer term program schedule. I look forward to continuing the progress in program support, membership and financial sustainability. Summer is a busy time with camp activity and putting plans in motion for a strong start to the fall program.

I appreciate the support you provide Scouting and our efforts together will enhance the programming, membership and financial strength of the NWSC. The Blast into Scouting on September 14 and launch date of October 7 are days when all volunteers and professionals will show the impact we can make together on Scouting and our community.

I would also like to welcome Terry Dutton who will be joining us July 1 as the PTAC Director of Program. Terry is an Eagle Scout and previously served as a teacher and elementary school principal as well as camp director. Welcome Terry.

Commissioner’s Corner

Have you heard the adage, “a tracked number grows?” It’s true. Tracking helps you stay focused on the goal and with focus and persistence comes success. And that is the heart of Journey to Excellence (JTE). Timely submission of progress is so immensely helpful toward growing scouting.

Did you know at any time, unit Key 3 and Key 3 delegate leaders can download all JTE values that are part of the nationally tracked measures. Just to go my.scouting.org and click “JTE reports.” This report is updated daily.

Commissioner Tools and Unit Visits Our Commissioner staff has adopted cloud-based “Commissioner Tools” that allows it ready access to unit performance and health from anywhere. We have asked our Commissioners to spend more time visiting units and recording their visits in Commissioner Tools. Our Commissioner staff is also making formal charter presentations and Journey to Excellence recognition to the chartering organization and unit, to reinforce outstanding performance by our Scouting units.

Commissioner Training Unit Commissioner training will be held in the Calumet Community at the Munster Scout Service Center on Saturday, June 17, 2017. Unit Commissioner training will be held from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM with Commissioner Tools training from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM. There is no charge for the training session and you can register at: https://scoutingevent.com/456- 13355. We anticipate a well-attended training session.

Troop 10 crew is getting ready for Philmont, but we are looking for an adult that has WFA, who can join with our Troop for the high adventure. Expenses, except for the Amtrak trip, would be covered. If interested, or able to serve please contact me immediately.

Message from the BSA Chief Scout Executive – Mike Surbaugh

Making Scouting More Accessible to Families Within Scouting, our families and volunteers consistently tell us that the values, character, and leadership skills taught to boys through Scouting is needed for the entire family. To that end, we are evaluating program options that will help us truly serve the needs of today’s families. Our objective is straightforward: to bring the benefits of Scouting to the greatest number of youth possible all the while remaining true to our mission and core values, outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. At the recent National Annual Meeting, we began a conversation about whether and how Scouting should serve a broader constituency. Based on the feedback, there is strong support that we thoughtfully move the discussion forward and continue our work in meeting the needs of families. More
