Running Start What is Running Start?

An opportunity to earn College Credit and High School Credit at the same time (Dual Credit)

Requirements: • Must be a high school junior or senior to participate • Must be enrolled in a public high school • Must pass placement test for English/Math or an alternative placement option (i.e. transcript review) http://www.bellevuecollege.edu/testing/placement/ Must use the Placement button on Placement website to submit requests • Must meet all program deadlines

Cost: • Local school district pays the tuition up to 15 credits (depends on NHS enrollment, see RSVF) • Students pay for books, class & student fees, and parking • Limited financial aid available based on financial need English Placement

• Students may use one of the following:

• Scheduling challenges • Must meet high school graduation requirements - (specific equivalencies available at BC) • Parents have limited control due to FERPA privacy laws • Transfer credit issues - may be of concern at private universities and out of state universities (check with your universities and look for the “&” sign in the college class name) • Books, fees and transportation costs - may be a few hundred dollars per quarter (limited assistance available for students on free/reduced lunch) Challenges cont…

• Fast pace and time demands of college studies • 1-2-3 Rule – for each one hour of instruction a day plan to study 2 hours each day for that one class (equals a three hour commitment per day) – Taking 10 credits = 30 hour commitment each week – Taking 15 credits = 45 hour commitment each week • A new social environment and age diversity • Doing poorly harms both high school and college transcripts (which could have financial aid ramifications) • Classes are currently all online • Conflicting vacations - different spring breaks, no February break • NHS Clubs and Athletics - scheduling/time conflicts • BC requires all students to maintain a 2.0 BC GPA (C average) • If your GPA for one quarter is below a 2.0, Running you will be placed on academic probation • Running Start students who achieve Start below a 2.0 GPA for ANY TWO QUARTERS will become ineligible to participate in the Academic program (during COVID times, dismissals are put off until spring) Policy • 15 credit limit per quarter or (1.2 FTE) between NHS and BC What about Part-time?

Your HS schedule will not change to accommodate your college schedule

Running Start is a year-long commitment

We encourage full-time Running Start • Students must enroll during the enrollment period this spring • After Newport starts in the fall, NO NHS classes will be dropped to accommodate RS • After RS classes begin, NO NHS classes will BSD be ADDED for credit • Students must turn in a signed BSD Running Running Start contract (to counselor) • Students must make an appointment with Start their NHS counselor before each quarter’s registration date (we may not be able to Policy meet with you if you drop in) to fill out RSVF • Your NHS counselor will work with you to plan out your full year of RS courses • requires all students to maintain a 2.0 GPA (“C” average) Bellevue • If your GPA for one quarter is below a 2.0, you will be placed on academic College probation.

Running • Running Start students who achieve below a 2.0 GPA for ANY TWO QUARTERS will become Start ineligible to participate in the program. • This means you have to come back to Academic school full-time at HS immediately! • This can hinder your ability to graduate Policy on time! Next Steps

Apply for RS at the college ▪ At BC, that means complete BOTH the RS Intent and the BC Application 4. Set up appt with your School Counselor (after you have applied and completed placement process) ▪ Come to the meeting with an idea of what classes you want to take ▪ Turn in completed BSD Running Start Contract ▪ Complete paperwork (RSEVF) with counselor 5. Fill out Running Start Application • Link to application forms/PDF files sent to student/parent email once eligibility is determined.
