Vs Doncaster

On Sunday, our boys played at Schraam’s Reserve in Doncaster. It was a chilly morning up on the hill with no tree cover in site. We were a little undermanned with 5 players out so some reinforcements were called in. The Doncaster team were undermanned as well so numbers were even across the board when play started. One end of the field was dry and hard yet the other, completely opposite. Wet, muddy and “fun” Do you have your according to the boys. There Get behind your club with REBEL!! defence was called upon and they managed to keep the opposing team to 2 goals while adding 2 themselves. Through fantastic teamwork and movement of the ball, the team gelled well and delivered the goods. It was evident however, that the Doncaster team had been given a good old fashioned rev up at half time and came out firing on the 3rd. They hit 2 quick goals into the wind and had us on the ropes fairly quickly. The boys rallied hard and fought tooth and nail for loose ground balls and found themselves back on top with great teamwork once again and using short and sharp

Today we celebrated 3 more players 50 games. Ollie Lanza, Ben Hales & Angus Hales. Ben and Angus started their footy career at the Sharks back in 2016 playing in the clubs first year of U8 alongside Darcy & Xavier with Ollie starting the same year but in one of the other U8 sides. With all boys playing a second season of U8 with Ollie joining us in 2017. I was lucky to meet Angus and Ben and be assistant coach in their first season of footy. Both boys are full of energy and bring something special to the team, their enthusiasm is infectious, and they have a determination to compete that is unrivalled. It is easy to say similar things about Angus and Ben as they play a similar style, both give everything they have each week and never give up, they have both improved so much and have thrived on moving from zones to the challenge of a full size ground. Ben an absolute machine who runs all day and is a no fuss footballer, with Angus being very particular about making sure he uses the ball well. You know what you are going to get from Ben and Angus every week. Lots of effort and plenty to say… Ollie who walks to the beat of his own drum and is his own man, he is a delight to coach and makes the difficult look easy. Ollie’s football improves all the time and his marking and contested effort on the ground are an asset to the team. Smart with the ball and always gives Angus Ollie and Ben 50 games

Heidelberg were not out of the game and after last week’s drop-off we pressed home finishing the game off, Ben N really wanted to make sure the boys had a win for their mates, took charge of the 3/4time war cry. With that it was never going to be beyond doubt, the boys took it to another level, Heidelberg had enough of the relentless pressure and tackling the boys bought to the game and finished off kicking 2 goals into the wind with the back line keeping a clean sheet. We changed the warm up routine to be a bit more physical and this seemed to pay off. We were hard at the contest and got off to a good start with Felix kicking a good goal early. Banyule had their chances as well, but we went into quarter time a goal up. We lost Jayden who had to go to hospital to get X-rays on a potential broken hand after he put his body on the line and wore a good hard tackle. Fortunately, he will be good for next week. Qtr 2: The second quarter saw us kick another two goals. Felix was able to use his pace to break open into space and give an unselfish handball over to Jacob S who kicked truly. Austin played on the wing and really relished the open spaces, using his pace and clean ball handling to kick long into our attack. Another goal to Felix from a strong pack mark saw us go into half time 3 goals up. THE SHARK ATTACK 28 Edition 11, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 29 Edition 11, 2019 and Mr Reliable, Oakesey we kept the opposition to only one goal. Killer Kilkenny had a day out on his wing and took multiple long runs with bounces and set up a number of forward entries. Awesome!! With Morcs playing well and creating space in the middle, Joel continually creating the run, our smaller guys really worked well together Tommy Rees, Seb, Zac, Fraser and Matty Parrott all made sure they were part of the game helping get that quick hand ball out when needed and stopping the opposition movements forward. On a great Sunday afternoon the boys travelled to Gordon Barnard Reserve to play Greythorn Kew who are bottom of the ladder. We wanted to make sure the boys were switched on as these are the ‘danger’ games that can quite easily slip past as a loss. With Tobias ‘Killer’ Kilkenny and Oscar ‘Polly’Pollock playing their 100th games each, our boys had plenty to play for!! The first qtr was away with a BANG as our General down forward Polly kicked the first goal of the game. What a start! A centre clearance down to Osc and we were away. The rest of the Oscar and Tobias 100 games and pre game chat first and second qtr we didn’t play our best. There were plenty of good signs although we just weren’t finishing the skills off. Dropped marks, kicks not hitting the targets & turn overs were giving the opposition the ball. With help again from Josh Smilie who kicked a goal as soon as he came on we were thank-full the opposition didn’t capitalise and we went into half time 1 pt down. With a small ‘rev’ up at half time we encouraged our boys to back their ability, our skill and just work harder and to the boys credit, they did! Demps took them on with 2 bounces through the middle, Sonders snagging a goal over his shoulder (great work as he was injured for most of the game, thanks Sonders). Osc kicked his second Davey Broadbent who again worked tirelessly across half forward got one as well. We swung JT onto the ball to add a little more toughness and drive, with Ace working really hard down back creating options with the handball

THE SHARK ATTACK 30 Edition 11, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 31 Edition 11, 2019 Final qtr. Big effort required. Blake who rucked tirelessly was so impressive. He rucked, marked, gathered ground balls & chased the ball forward for 80m at one point. By far his best SPONSOR game of the year. Beau O had a ripper game. He took contested marks & ran hard. Moved OPPORTUNITY FOR onto the ball in the final qtr, that didn’t change. Dan S continued to try hard making contests. Unfortunately injuries to Harry & Ben S robbed us of a bit of drive so we could make the THIS TEAM impression on the scoreboard needed. We had a great day for footy at the Shark Tank. Brodie won the toss as captain for the day & we implored the boys to take on the game right from the first bounce. And we did. Blake absolutely dominated the ruck contest, Harry crumbing the tap & sending it long into our forward line. In the first 5 minutes we had goals from Robbie & Mitch on the board. Balwyn hit back with 2 of their own but we maintained our rage, Mitch unlucky not to have a second but a magnificant snap from Robbie put us a goal up at qtr time. Special mention to the back line. Brodie & Jacob fearlessly attacking the ball. Bo B & Jack harassing their opponents. Beau O & Sam intercepting the ball brilliantly. The second qtr Balwyn managed to get on top & we couldn’t get it through the big sticks. Dan S was trying his guts out but with Dan W going down with a back injury, we lost our big focal point. Ben W was showing real dash & Lucas was getting his hands to the ball across his wing. Ben S came into the center and made a real difference. At half time we were 10 points down. We needed goals in the 3rd qtr. Remi was a threat in the forward line & Liam was great at exerting pressure in our forward line. Rhys has continued to play good footy & took the game on, just missing a goal close to 3 qtr time. But by the time the siren went we were 21 points down.

THE SHARK ATTACK 32 Edition 11, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 33 Edition 11, 2019 Zac started to look more dangerous up forward but we did not finish off well enough leaving the boys around 3 goals down at ¾ time. QTR 4 The last quarter was all Sharks with Cooper a brickwall down back, Tom and Ben Parrett playing our way with great pressure and chasing not allowing Kew to run. Lachie laid some great tackles up forward which was a highlight while Liam in his customary role across half back was as solid as always. Brodie moved down back which helped us steady. QTR 1 Playing the top side and the boys second on the ladder was proving to be a game very important coming into finals. Missing Dicko, Jake and Kane which is part of the midfield group was going to be a further challenge. We also missed Kevin who kicked 3 goals the week before! Having the aid of the breeze was a good start but that is where it finished with our boys outplayed most of the quarter and only starting to get some momentum late in the first quarter. Robbo was a presence up forward competing giving off a goal to Rhonan but other than that going into the break a couple of goals down was not ideal. QTR 2 This quarter was all about our lack of effort and pressure with too many bystanders and leaving it up to Corey, Shannon, Ghostie, Maca and Ben Duffy to take the game up to Kew. QTR 3 After half time we moved Tymmsy into the middle and he had an immediate impact with repeat efforts out of the middle, while James started to get on top in the ruck and around the ground. Buckets got one for his troubles, but not too many notable forward entries and the back six had to earn their keep as the entries were thick and fast all quarter, but persistent endeavours probably saved the day. 1/2 time and this time the coaching group administered the metaphorical kick in the arse and the third was a premiership quarter that saw the coaches requested answered in spades and

Round 11 led us to our last home game at Domeney Reserve for the season. Glen Iris have been playing some good football in the lead up and were ahead of us on the ladder, as jostling for top four positions became critical for any team with finals aspirations. eW knew this was going to be a difficult game but one that we went into with confidence having knocked fof Ivanhoe the week prior. The weather was good for football, slight breeze, cool but sunny with a relatively dry firm ground. We were missing three more players this week with Jaide still on leave, Sienna S unavailable and Grace B out injured. This left us with one rotation, with players getting good playing time. Our captains for the week were Mia Spencer Jones and Charlotte Peterson who were rewarded for not only their playing efforts but also their training standards and leadership skills. Their pre-game speeches in the rooms were terrific and taken on board by all players as we headed out to tackle Glen Iris. The girls were asked to switch on from the start and that they did. We jumped out of the blocks winning early possessions in the midfield through the likes of Mia SJ, Scarlett, Charlotte P and Allie. All four girls in the middle were fierce at the contest and relentless at pushing the ball

THE SHARK ATTACK 40 Edition 11, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 41 Edition 11, 2019 forward to give our forwards an opportunity to score. Scoring wasn’t an issue in the first half. We kicked five goals with two of them coming from Charlotte K who was on fire. Allie, Mia SJ & Tia all chipped in to contribute to our scoring. They were well supported by our other forwards in Zara, Sienna P, Charlise, Bonnie and Bianca. Our backline continued to dominate holding Glen Iris scoreless to half time. Tia, Indi, Mia B, Willow and Grace Dawson all combined well to repel the opposition at every opportunity. After half time some of our backline moved forward and vice versa. Ella Saunders moved into the ruck and Mia Bosna moved into the midfield, with both girls performing their roles well. The performance of Ava was a highlight as she racked up the possessions with her strong attack at the footy, she ran and chased, winning numerous hard ball gets. Ava went on to win the opposition medal in a great display. Well done Ava on this performance and the progress you are making with your football. The second half was an even contest with Glen Iris scoring an early goal in the third quarter then not scoring another goal for the rest of the game. We lost momentum in the last half but fortunately all the hard work was done in the first half. It was really pleasing to see an even team effort. We have plenty to work on in the remaining three home and away games. Having won six of our last seven games is testament to the girls attitudes and hunger to win. There is nothing better than getting the chance to sing our song again arm in arm in in our own clubrooms. We now are on the road, away for our last three games and face some teams who will be desperate to play finals football. eW now need to step up and finish off the season well. Again, well done on another win and on your continued efforts.

Yes another tough day at the office! I didn’t think it was possible for a team to out score us by 50 points to 0 in a half of footy but it happened today. A lesser team may have dropped their heads & let that continue but to our girls credit we were much more competitive in the second half walked away beaten but not defeated ! THE SHARK ATTACK 44 Edition 11, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 45 Edition 11, 2019 Seriously, training drills don’t get as good as this!!! St Marys moved the ball forward in the next play, but 2 consecutive highlights from the backline followed with Courtney’s deceptive violin handball to Taliah who took off that fast with the ball and did some kind of ‘hot shoe shuffle’ that had everyone beat! With the defensive pressure by the Sharks as good as we’ve seen and tackling in groups of 2 onto 1, the momentum was building for us to kick another goal. With the ball in the forward line, the opportunistic Sophie released a great handball to Zoe who passed to Lauren for our 2nd goal. By the time Heath said, “the girls are on fire”, we were off again. The next passage of play involved Taliah, Petra winning the contest against 2 players, great passing by Jorja to GIRLS UNDER 16 RED: Coached by: Tim Livingstone Sophie and amazing tackle by Kristen. Nat took off with the ball in the forward flank, driving her legs weaving through traffic for a long kick at goal. Unfortunately, the kick was off line, but miraculously bounced backwards in front of the point post, snatched out of air by the Jumper Name Jumper Name running Sophie to slot through our 3rd goal. The backline held their own attacking the ball and 2 Kristen Bertoldi 14 Jade Hutchinson opposition, setting up the midfield and forward line. Sophie was on fire this quarter and after winning the ball in the contest, snapped the ball over her shoulder to Zoe D who took a brilliant 18 Courtney Murray 16 Natalie Broadbent 1 on 1 overhead mark in front of goal and converted for our 4th goal. Lana attacked the ball 4 Jorja Livingstone 20 Chelsea Dunoon with ferocity smothering another kick (No#2) Mia was incredibly unlucky hitting the inside of the post from two acute boundary line shots. Chelsea was back to her best, taking a great mark in 5 Chloe Lee 22 Lauren Knowles the middle and as for Kristen, you could have sworn their were 2 of her on the ground as she 6 Alannah Boell 23 Jasmine Taylor was everywhere! The unrelentless defensive pressure from the Sharks was incredible. And with 9 Mia McAuliffe 17 Taliah Cameron one of the best passages of never die football, involved Dakota winning the contest and kicking the ball into the forward line, Mia won the contested ball on the ground, released it to Sophie, 10 Matilda Rae 32 Petra Edwards then to Tilly for a sneaky little toe poke kick to Zoe who kicked her 2nd goal and our 5th for the 11 Sophie Harvie 12 Flynn Peters Quarter. Without doubt, the best 1st Quarter of football so far Reds and better still we held St 15 Zoe Douglas 26 Dakota Hoen Mary’s scoreless! Sharks 5.3.33 to St Marys 0.0.0

Park Orchards 9.8.62 def St Marys 2.3.15

On the 19th July at 6.52pm, Katrina delivered a fantastic email advising our game had been moved to Binnak Park. By all accounts this ground seemed to be double the size which would suit the Reds running game and with fingers crossed the weather gods would look after us as we anticipated an exceptional football game against our arch rivals. After a cracking warmup session ( although the grass was a little too long for some players (Note- Heath to bring lawnmower next time), Tim sat with the girls in the change rooms in what looked like the ‘Circle of Trust’ and captivated the girls with a D&M of why we play the game and a review by each player of their teammates strengths. It was overwhelming to hear the players thoughts of what their teammates bring to the Reds Team and whilst it didn’t have the normal coach gusto to get the Reds going prior to the game, the process was a master stroke as the Reds opened the game playing their best 1st Quarter of football this season! WARNING- This quarter was full of highlights, so a little longer than most Match reports...sorry, but dam it was exciting! OK, back to the report; Thank god for Video footage, because the 1st goal only took 40 seconds from the first ball up! Although Lana just lost the ruck contest to a player much taller than her, her 2nd effort to smother (No#1) the ball and kick it to Kristen who took a brilliant 1 on 1 mark was sensational. Jorja speared the ball to Tilly, who marked and went back to kick our 1st goal for the game! Tilly fires off the handball

THE SHARK ATTACK 46 Edition 11, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 47 Edition 11, 2019 Phew… now the 2nd Quarter Zoe won the ruck and Lana smothered another kick (No#3, but who’s counting?) Jazzy continued to get in the thick of it and ripped a cracking violin handball to Lana, then onto to Kristen who took on 2 players and delivered a lovely 4m handball on her opposite hand to Tilly, to Taliah and then back to Kristen to set up Mia for our 1st goal of the 2nd Quarter- what a start! Courtney continued to impose her physicality with another bone crunching tackle and when Chloe Lee ran backwards at full pelt to take a super courageous mark, we knew the Sharks confidence was up. The remainder of the quarter was tough and we managed only another 3 points in this 2nd Quarter, whilst St Mary’s managed 1 behind. The 2nd Quarter ended, Sharks, 6.6.42 to St Marys, 0.1.01.

All smiles from the coaches

The game ended Sharks 9.8.62 defeating St Marys 2.3 15

Another great delivery from Paris Taliah dashes out of defence We knew St Marys would come out firing with some elite players in their team not liking the scoreboard. Fortunately, the 3rd Quarter started with Petra dominating across centre half back, taking 2 brilliant overhead marks, running and kicking long into the forward line. Lana smothered another kick that would have landed in their forward line (No#4 for the game- but who’s counting?) and Mia followed suit with a great smother. Lauren kicked another great goal thanks to some great play by Sophie and Mia. St Marys certainly upped their offensive pressure with long accurate kicks and great marking. The Sharks defence led by Flynn, Chloe, Chelsea and Nat did an incredible job stopping many forward plays from a very persistent St Marys. Unfortunately, they kicked 2 goals in this quarter, but it could have been many more!

The 3rd Quarter ended Sharks 7.749 to St Marys 2.3.15. The Final Quarter was going to be a ripper with St Marys sniffing a possible comeback Congratulations Reds - outstanding game! following on from their 2 consecutive goals at the end of the last quarter. The Sharks knew they had to come out prepared. St Marys got off to what they thought was their 3rd consecutive Captain: Jorja goal, with admittedly a brilliant long kick at goal from just inside 50m. The premature Vice Captain- Lana celebrations by the coaching staff of St Marys was cut short with Lana taking a great mark right on the goal line. Our defensive pressure, teamwork, run and carry and 2nd efforts contributed Deputy Vice Captain- Jasmine to Tilly and Lauren kicking 2 more goals for the Sharks to finish the game. Although we kicked Goals: Lauren 3, Zoe 2, Tilly 2, Sophie, Mia, many goals, the defenders in Flynn, Chelsea, Dakota, Courtney, Taliah and Petra were sensational, holding St Marys scoreless in the last quarter. Best players: Dakota, Lana, Taliah, Jorja, Mia, Jazz, Petra, Chloe, Flynn, Courtney, Zoe, Kristen, Tilly
