Monkey on the run after storm

By CARL MCKINNEY [email protected]

A monkey is on the lam in a Lake City neighborhood, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Two snow macaques and two capuchin monkeys escaped from their enclosure at a home on Southwest Steedley Drive during a storm at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, said FWC spokesperson Karen Parker. FWC officers found three of the primates within a matter of hours, but a snow macaque still remains at large. “We’re working with the owner to address the situa- tion,” Parker said. The runaway macaque was last spotted 11:30 p.m. Monday in a backyard on Steedley Drive. A trap is in place to capture the monkey. Anyone who sees the macaque should avoid approaching it and call FWC’s wildlife alert number at 888-404-3922, Parker said. The owner has all necessary permits and passed an inspection in March with no violations, Parker said.

OUR OPINION Downtown renaissance owntown Lake City is on a tear. We have one craft brewery, with Danother on the way; the esteemed Marion Street Cafe; Sal’s, a nice Italian restaurant with, among other things, the best fudge in town; and, soon enough, a refur- bished Blanche Hotel. We didn’t support this project, but now that the papers have been signed, we obviously want it to work. Lake City’s financial well being depends on it. Now there’s a new player on the downtown stage: Vann Carpet One, which just pur- chased the old State Exchange Bank building on Madison Street. Bucking a national trend, retail is returning to downtown Lake City. This is a big one. We see Vann’s as a potential catalyst that will draw other major players downtown as well. It’s good to see. And it makes us especially glad that city officials backed away from their plan to house City Hall at the Blanche, opting for mixed-use retail instead.
