THE MISSION OF TRINITY CATHEDR AL IS TO PROCLAIM IN WORD AND ACTION GOD’S JUSTICE, LOVE AND MERCY FOR ALL CREATION. TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Jeremiah 23:1-6

oe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered Wmy flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The LORD is our righteousness.”

Psalm 46 1 God is our refuge and strength, * a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved * and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;

3 Though its waters rage and foam, * and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.

4 The God of hosts is with us * The God of Jacob is our stronghold.

5 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, * the holy habitation of the Most High

6 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be overthrown; * God shall help it at the break of day.

7 The nations make much ado, and the realms are shaken; * God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away.

8 The God of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

9 Come now and look upon the works of the Most High, * who does awesome things on earth.

10 It is God who makes war to cease in all the world, * who breaks the bow and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire.

11 “Be still, then, and know that I am God; * I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.”

12 The God of hosts is with us; * The God of Jacob is our stronghold.

2 Colossians 1:11-20

ay you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to God, who has enabled you to share in the Minheritance of the saints in the light. God has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in Christ all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. Christ himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Christ is the head of the body, the church; Christ is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Christ God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Luke 23:33-43

hen they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “God, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And Wthey cast lots to divide his clothing. The people stood by, watching Jesus on the cross; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. 4 We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE CLOSING SONG Can’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore This world is not my home, I’m just passing through My treasures and my hopes are all beyond the blue Where many friends and kindred have gone on before And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Oh, lord, you know I have no friend like you If heaven’s not my home, then lord, what would I do The angels beckon me to heaven’s open door And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Just over in Glory land, there is no dying there The saints are shouting vic’try and singing everywhere I hear the voice of them that I have heard before And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Oh, lord, you know I have no friend like you If heaven’s not my home, then lord, what would I do The angels beckon me to heaven’s open door And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Heaven is expecting me, that’s one thing I know I fixed it up with Jesus a long time ago He will take me through, though I am weak and poor And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Oh, lord, you know I have no friend like you If heaven’s not my home, then lord, what would I do The angels beckon me to heaven’s open door And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

I have a loving mother over in Glory land I don’t expect to stop until I shake her hand She’s gone on before, just waiting at heaven’s door And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Oh, lord, you know I have no friend like you If heaven’s not my home, then lord, what would I do The angels beckon me to heaven’s open door And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore…. No I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Music led by the Poor Ornery Sinners: Reverend Amy Greene, Vocals; Larry Anderson, Fiddle and Guitar; Steve Roberts, Banjo and Mandolin; Bo Shiverick, Guitar; 10 MUSIC NOTES

The Poor Ornery Sinners would like to dedicate today’s music to the memory of our dear friend and bass player, David Bowman. After a couple of fiddle tunes and Amy Greene sings Brightest and Best, we will play Beautiful Star of Bethlehem. This Stanley Brothers song was one of Bishop Bowman’s favorites. We hope you will join the singing.

The Gradual song is another Stanley Brothers song, “The Darkest Hour is Just Before the Dawn.” For the Offertory, we will do one of our favorite Tom Waits tunes, “Come on Up to the House.” At the Eucharist we will sing the song In the “Palm of Your Hand,” followed by the old hymn “Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown.” The music for “Stars in My Crown” was written by John R. Sweney who was an active 19th- century choir leader and composer. Apparently it was a common saying among church leaders that, “Sweeny knows how to make a congregation sing.” We hope this hymn will make you want to sing too.

And we will end today’s service with “I Can’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore.” The Carter family recorded this old Baptist hymn on May 26, 1931 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

And finally, we would like to bid a very fond farewell and wish good luck to our guitar player Bo Shiverick. Bo is moving south to join his wife the Reverend Martha Shiverick, who was called to the Riviera Presbyterian Church in Miami. We will miss Bo’s great playing and singing, as well as his willingness to play any song in any key. Thank you, Bo!

MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY King of Glory, King of Peace Music: Harold Friedell, Text: George Herbert King of glory, King of peace, I will love thee; and that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me; thou didst note my working breast, thou hast spared me.

Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me; and alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me.

Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enroll thee: e’en eternity’s too short to extol thee.

15 Presider It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us and make us heirs of eternal life; that when he comes again we may, without shame or fear, rejoice to behold his appearing. Presider Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Creator of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in Love to the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of our faith: # 4 Œ œ w œ œ œ œ ˙™ & 4 œ œ ˙ ˙ œ ˙ ˙ w Christ has died. Christ is ri - sen. Christ will come a - gain.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. b4 ˙ & 4 ˙ ˙ ˙ œ œ ˙ w
