Great Championship Start For Senior Hurlers Na Fianna 3-20 Setanta 0-08

In Parnell Park on Thursday night Na Fianna cruised to an impressive win against Setanta in their Championship opener. AJ Murphy was the scorer-in-chief as he tallied 1-8. A seventh minute penalty converted by Jonathan Treacy put Na Fianna on their way and further goals from AJ Murphy and Seamie O'Sullivan had their side effectively out of sight when leading 3-12 to 0-5 at half-time. Great start for the lads well done to all.

Senior Footballers Deliver In Local Derby

Na Fianna 1-15 Kickhams 2-07

In a hotly contested local derby last Saturday in Mobhi Road, Na Fianna emerged five point winners over Ballymun Kickhams in a match that had it all. With the game’s three goals scored in the first half, Na Fianna’s goal scored by Neil Flannery, our lads went in a point to the good at half time. Early Ballymun second half scores kept the sides level. However the dismissal of Davey Byrne half way through the first half allowed Na Fianna to finish the game strongly, kicking five unanswered points shared between Conor McHugh, Adam Caffrey and Eoghan Neville. Well done to our lads on a great win.

Féile Hurling Success

The Hurling Feile was held last weekend and again it was a demonstration of how the club and community pulls together and puts on a fantastic show. We hosted the Division 2 Feile in Collinstown and a lot of time, effort and hard work went into organising this event. A massive thanks is due to the organising Committee including Pairic, Ruth and her team, Andy, Philip, TJ, Shay, Shane, Mel, Mary Begley, Mark, Dara, Dermot, Billy and Jim for their trojan efforts in pulling it all together on the day. Thanks to all the mentors and parents from the hurling and football sides for their massive support in this effort also and not forgetting all the club officials who have provided fantastic assistance as usual. It was a special effort and very much appreciated.

Na Fianna B Féile Hurlers

When the piper lead the four teams out in Collinstown for the parade of the four teams, Naomh Barrrog, Naomh Olaf’s, Commercials and of course our own Na Fianna lads, there were a few hardened hurlers with something in their eyes! It made it all worthwhile. The visiting clubs were fulsome in their praise for the welcome they received on the day.

Unfortunately our A team were a little slow out of the blocks and lost narrowly to Naomh Barrog in their first game, 2-4 to 0-5. They recovered to beat Commercials, 3-5 to 1-5. In the final game, they performed excellently and drew with Naomh Olafs, 1-4 to 0-7 and so exited from the competition. Naomh Barrog went on to lose narrowly in the semi-finals and

Naomh Olafs got to the final so there are very small margins between winning and losing. The team will learn from this and move on to a bigger and brighter future especially with the high calibre of coaching they are receiving from Declan Brennan, Paul O’Dea, Shane Barrett and Eoin Skelly.

The B team travelled to Vincent’s more in hope than expectation as we have been struggling in the league. After a slow start against Liffey Gaels, the team really pulled together and won 1-11 to -0-2. Next up were Pine Forrest Gaels and another great performance in the second half saw us win 2-6 to 0-2. Momentum was building and in our final group game we beat the hosts St Vincent’s 4-3 to 1-6. Now one game away from the final. St Pat’s of Palmerstown were semi-final opponents and after a tough game we came out on top on a score line of 3-9 to 1-2. We travelled to Blakestown Road on Sunday morning for the final in

glorious sunshine. There was a brilliant Na Fianna support headed by the A hurlers and the footballers in a great show of solidarity with their club mates.

Pine Forest Gaels were our opponents again. They really put it up to us in the first half but we hung on to a narrow lead, 0-4 to 0-3. The lads regrouped at half time and put their stamp on the game after getting a fortuitous goal. We ended up winning 3-8 to 0-4 with goals from Ben Jesson, Jack Guinan and Martin Purtill-Kalk. This sparked great celebrations culminating in a lap of honour after captain fantastic Ben Jesson received the cup. A great feile for the boys and a memory they’ll treasure for a long time.

An added bonus was that all 22 on the panel played in every game. The captaincy fell to Gary Conroy and Eoin Cragg in the earlier rounds. Overall, it was an all-round team effort with great grit, determination and positivity shown. The Féile weekend ended in Mobhi Road with a celebratory pizza! Like the sunshine on the day, a glorious weekend! They hurled like men, they played the game!

Saturday morning then sees Meadhbh Ni Dhalaigh team up with Lisa Mc Kenna in the Ladies Junior Doubles Final V Roscommon, The Roscommon girls are a class pair who earlier in the year won the world C Doubles title. Meadhbh will be hoping to make up for her Semi Final loss in the Singles.

Directly after the Girls’ game Meadhbh’s brother Cian teams up with one of very experienced handballers Michael Carrie. This pair have won out in Leinster with 20 pairs in that section. They have beaten very strong opponents from Limerick in the semi final and face a very strong pair from Monaghan in the Final. One of the Monaghan pair has already won the singles title in style and also won the All Ireland Colleges Singles Final so they have their work cut out.
