Curious About Cryptocurrencies? Investors Need to Make Sure They Separate “Investing” from “Speculation” By Don McArthur, CFA® Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have received plenty of media coverage lately, and it is natural for investors to wonder about them. Even celebrities have become associated with Bitcoin publicity through social media. Interest has piqued to a point where there are even Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that invest in Bitcoin, giving investors the means to invest in the Futures market. After having performed in-depth research on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, our position at Commerce Trust Company is that they should not currently play a role in client portfolios. As part of that research, Commerce Senior Vice President and Investment Analyst Don McArthur, CFA, put together a primer on the topic of cryptocurrencies in general. In the following commentary, he explains why Bitcoin at this stage is more about speculating than investing in something with intrinsic value. Settle, Salisbury University, USA ABSTRACT Two ShopBots were used to determine high-to-low price dispersion for identical models of 25 consumer durables, in 2007 and again in 2011, revealing substantial but declining price dispersion ratios. A survey of 1,135 American online shoppers revealed their dependence on ShopBots and frequency of other online shopping actions. Typical respondent reported they "very often" used search sites to locate what they wanted. Nearly 30 percent used the most often named price comparison site, Yahoo! Shopping, in the past year, suggesting substantial potential for future price rationalization. Several customer relationship management tools online merchants might use to avoid the resulting direct price competition are discussed. Finally, the impact of m- commerce, tablets, and apps on online price comparison behavior is explored. Traffic engi- neering systems at the cloud edge must strike a fine balance between minimizing costs and maintaining the latency ex- pected by clients. The nature of this tradeoff is complex due to non-linear pricing schemes prevalent in the market for inter-domain bandwidth. We quantify this tradeoff and un- cover several key insights from the link-utilization between a large cloud provider and Internet service providers. As the Internet has become ubiquitous, many retailers have created websites and even entire divisions devoted to fulfilling online orders. Whatever the reason, retail e- commerce sales have skyrocketed and the Internet will undoubtedly continue to influence how consumers shop, underscoring the need for good data to track this increasingly important economic activity. In June 2017, the Census Bureau released a new supplemental data table on retail e-commerce by type of retailer. The Census Bureau developed these estimates by re-categorizing e-commerce sales data from its ESA Issue Brief existing “electronic shopping” sales data according to the primary #04-17 business type of the retailer, such as clothing stores, food stores, or electronics stores. This report examines how the new estimates enhance our understanding of where consumers are shopping online and also provides an overview of trends in retail and e-commerce sales. Findings from this report include: E-commerce sales accounted for 7.2 percent of all retail sales in 2015, up dramatically from 0.2 percent in 1998. July 26, 2017 E-commerce sales have been growing nine times faster than traditional in-store sales since 1998. -

Diffusion and Productivity of an Open Source Software: CakePHP Master’s Thesis Author: Anwari Ilman 881206-6473 Supervisor: Dr. Philippe Rouchy Written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for obtaining the degree of Master of Science in Industrial Economics and Management (120 credits) Specialization: Entrepreneurship and Innovation Department of Industrial Economics Blekinge Tekniska Högskola Karlskrona, Sweden January 2015 1 Abstract The purpose of this thesis was to establish an understanding on the productivity of Open Source Software (OSS) developer community through diffusion of innovation. It was empirically ascertained that network effect affects productivity of OSS community, which provide enough justification to view the matter of productivity through the lens of diffusion of innovation. To reach its purpose, this thesis tackled the issue in two ways: 1) It utilized a definition of IT productivity for new technologies that especially deals with Open Source Software (OSS) communities and 2) It proposed tools and methods to perform such studies. A mature OSS project called CakePHP was chosen as a case for this thesis. I compiled time-series data from the software’s source code that accounts for more than 8 years of development. The obtained raw data in a form of ‘commits’ was converted into network graph and time-series productivity data. Then, dynamic network visualization software was employed to analyze the evolution of its network structure. A quantitative regression analysis using Negative Binomial estimator was also employed to estimate the effects of individual work intensity, community work intensity and network effect on its production rate. Visual inspection on CakePHP’s adoption pattern shows that it does indeed follow S- shaped diffusion curve normally found in other innovation life cycle, though yet to complete its life cycle. -

Legal Chal- lenges and European Perspective on Contracts through Elec- tronic Means in Video Games and Decentralized Applications Olena Demchenko PhD student, University of Pécs, Faculty of Law The present paper explains the need in the application of electronic commerce regulations to the so-called in-game purchasing activity in video games, particularly, purchase of intangible items, where such game is commoditized, focusing on the legislation of the European Union. It examines in detail the various applications of European regulations to the issues connected to the gaming industry in the European Union - gambling regulations, geo-blocking, data protection, smart con- tracts validity and enforcement, virtual currencies regulation in the scope of contractual law, and shows a possible way to adapt the national legislation of the Member States and European legis- lation in order to secure electronic commerce in the gaming industry. The present paper analyses gaps in existing legal procedures, stresses the necessity of new legal models in order to regulate the purchase of intangible items in video games and decentralized applications and underlines the importance of amendments to current European legislation with particular focus on new devel- opments of Create, Retrieve, Append, Burn technology and commoditized video games in order to protect consumer rights and the free movement of digital goods and to accomplish the Digital Single Market Strategy of the European Union. Brannon Legislative Attorney June 6, 2019 Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1934, enacted as part of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA), broadly protects online service providers like social media companies from being held liable for transmitting or taking down user-generated content. In part because of this broad immunity, social media platforms and other online content hosts have largely operated without outside regulation, resulting in a mostly self-policing industry. However, while the immunity created by Section 230 is significant, it is not absolute. For example, courts have said that if a service provider “passively displays content that is created entirely by third parties,” Section 230 immunity will apply; but if the service provider helps to develop the problematic content, it may be subject to liability. Commentators and regulators have questioned in recent years whether Section 230 goes too far in immunizing service providers. In 2018, Congress created a new exception to Section 230 in the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017, commonly known as FOSTA. Post-FOSTA, Section 230 immunity will not apply to bar claims alleging violations of certain sex trafficking laws. Some have argued that Congress should further narrow Section 230 immunity—or even repeal it entirely. This Sidebar provides background information on Section 230, reviewing its history, text, and interpretation in the courts. The motivations for purchasing a business are as varied as the number of buyers: to expand the buyer’s existing business with a similar operation or to create new opportunities through a complimentary business. Perhaps the buyer seeks to change careers or add income to an existing one. And there is always the notion that buying an existing business avoids some of the risk associated with opening a new business. Business purchases are typically structured in one of two ways: a stock transfer or an asset purchase. A stock purchase involves buying the stock (or membership interest) of the company that owns the business. Typically, liabilities are assumed as well. An asset purchase involves just the assets of a company. In either format, determining what is being acquired is critical. This article focuses on some of the important categories of assets to consider in a business purchase: real estate, personal property, and intellectual property. Real Estate For many businesses (especially retail and restaurants) the real estate may be the most substantial asset. The seller either owns or leases the property, and there are different considerations for each alternative. If real estate is part of the sale, it will likely represent the bulk of the purchase price. If the business operates in leased premises, the seller would assign the lease to the buyer, and it is very likely that the landlord will need to consent to the assignment. -

During the industrial era the half-life of a business model has been measured in generations. Business models have al- ways lasted a long time. Business models rarely changed and were handed down from generation to generation. Most business leaders have never had to change their business model. Most CEOs have led a single business model throughout their entire career. They never learned how to change a business model in business school or from their peers, who also have never had to change their business models. During the industrial era once the basic rules for how a company creates, delivers, and captures value were established they became etched in stone, fortified by functional silos, and sustained by reinforcing company cultures. All of a company’s DNA, energy, and resources were focused on scaling the business model and beating back competition attempting to do a better job executing the same business model. Companies with nearly identical business models slugged it out for market share within well-defined industry sectors.
