NOVEMBER 2020 FFalalll NNeewwsslleettteerr FEEDING THE NEED SINCE 1980

After 40 years of wandering, Loaves & Fishes has found a home!

Since 1980, Loaves & Fishes has been providing nutritious meals to hungry and homeless families, children, seniors, veterans and the disabled community throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. But for the past 40 years, we have been doing this without a permanent place to call home. Thanks to the incredible generosity John A. and Sue Sobrato, we were able to break bread in our new 12,000 sq. ft. home located at 1500 Berger Drive in San Jose! On October 9th, 2020, we held a private, safe and socially-distanced ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration of John and Sue with local community leaders and partners in attendance. Before recognizing John and Sue Sobrato for their longtime, generous support that made our purchase possible, Mayor Sam Liccardo shared his experiences volunteering with Loaves & Fishes as a teenager! And we couldn't be more grateful! Thank you, John, Sue, and Sam for your support and commitment to help our hungry and homeless neighbors in need!

At A Glance… In FY2020, we provided 1,054,000 meals to families, children, seniors, veterans and disabled persons throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties – double the number of meals in FY2019!

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, 2020, requests for our services have tripled! 1 in 3 of those we serve are children.

Nearly 800,000 of our neighbors go to bed at night hungry, and not knowing from where their next meal will come.

We have seen our greatest increase in need among families with children and seniors.

For the majority of those were serve, our hot, prepared nutritious meal will be their only meal that day. John A. and Sue Sobrato - October 9th, 2020 Your support helps us move our guests from Hunger to Hope – Thank You! Message from the CEO What a year! Our 40th year of service has certainly seen its fair share of changes! We began 2020 preparing for our Anniversary celebration, and then COVID-19 struck. Shelter in Place led to our cancelling our celebration, and saw the complete redesigning of our services in order to ensure that we continued to serve our neighbors in need in the safest manner possible. We moved from communal dining and service to individual “to go” meals, and increased our partnership locations by 25% (and, for the first time in our history, created a waiting list of meal delivery sites). Since March, the number of meals we are providing has grown nearly 300% - from 2,500 meals to 7,000 meals a day! And in the midst of it all – with the incredible generosity and support of John and Sue Sobrato, Loaves & Fishes – after 40 years of wandering - has a permanent home in San Jose! Our new building at 1500 Berger Drive in San Jose will enable us to centralize our services, and serve even more of our hungry and homeless neighbors in need. Because the pandemic has shown no signs of slowing or stopping (indeed we are starting yet another surge), we know these increased levels of service delivery will be with us for the foreseeable future. So what does this mean for Loaves & Fishes? It means more meals, more partnerships, and more ways for us to deliver our nutritious meals throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Quite simply, we can’t do it alone! Your generosity and support means the world to us and our work, now more than ever in the wake of this damnable pandemic. YOU are what will enable us to “feed the need” at these unprecedented levels. Together, with your support, we will continue to help families, children, seniors and veterans move from hunger to hope, guided, as always, by the heart of our mission - that all are welcome, no questions asked. - Gisela B. Bushey, CEO, Loaves & Fishes

And Now…A Word From Our Board Chair, Dan Barsanti

In 1980, we began with a simple meal of fish and bread for 11 adults and 15 children. By the end of our fiscal year this past June 30th, with a staff of 18 and a $2 million cash budget, we provided over 1 million meals to our hungry and homeless neighbors throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Considering the challenges produced by the COVID-19 pandemic, this was quite an accomplishment! As the months go by and people remain out of work, the need continues to grow. Kudos to our hard-working and dedicated staff for meeting the need! This year Loaves & Fishes is celebrating its 40th Anniversary. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our donors. Your financial support is the life blood of Loaves & Fishes. Thank you to our volunteers for the gift of your time. You enable us to keep our labor costs down. Thank you to our current Board and Advisory Board members for your commitment and vision in charting a path for the future of our organization to meet the ever-increasing needs of our community. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to our past Board members. Collectively, over four decades, you created a solid foundation for us to build upon. As you can see, Loaves & Fishes has been incredibly blessed during these trying and unpredictable times with tremendous community and volunteer support. Please know how much we appreciate you! To our corporate, foundation and individual partners supporting us throughout the COVID-19 pandemic

We are so blessed to have the support of our corporate, foundation and individual partners, who are committed to our mission and have generously increased their giving since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support to provide healthy and safe meals for our community. You are helping make a difference in the lives of so many! In the past 8 months, your generosity has provided OVER ONE MIILION MEALS! Thank you!!!

The "Ripple" Effect Feeds 500,000!

The COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for people and businesses around the world. It has also highlighted amazing acts of kindness and incredible generosity from companies and partners to support our communities. If you’re not into cryptocurre n c y , you may have never heard of Ripple. But the -based block chain firm made a big splash this past April with its generosity during the coronavirus pandemic. Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen has received a $1 million donation from Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen to continue providing nutritious meals and supporting families, children, seniors, veterans, and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the Bay Area. Gisela Bushey, Loaves & Fishes’ Chief Executive Officer, said, “Ripple and Chris’ generosity and support will provide 500,000 meals that are so desperately needed throughout the Bay Area.” “In a ‘normal month,’ we provide over 100,000 hot and prepared, nutritious meals to families in need. We are now living and working in a ‘new normal’ of considerably greater need. This current crisis is shining a light on how incredibly precarious people’s food and living situations are in the Bay Area." Ripple agrees, noting that despite the Bay Area’s vibrant economy and abundance of wealth, one in five people have less than $400 in their bank accounts for necessities such as meals. “The rise in food insecurity during COVID-19 threatens our most vulnerable communities. Bay Area organizations, such as Loaves & Fishes, are mounting special efforts to help provide meals and combat hunger to those who will be most heavily impacted by the pandemic,” said Chris Larsen, co-founder and Executive Chairman of Ripple. https://www.loavesfishes.org/other-ways-to-donate BOARD OF DIRECTORS
