Development of Marine Corps Helicopter Assault Tactics BY SGT. WAYNE A. BUTTERBAUGH PHOTOS TAKEN BY M SGTS. JIM NORTHROP & M. SOFRANOFF

I was not certain whether I was observing a battle in Korea, having a nightmare, or on a Hollywood set watching the filming of a war movie.

In reality, I was at "Combat Town" observing Operation Pagoda, a simulated combat demonstration which was just about as close as it is possible to get to the "real thing" without the danger of being maimed. The purpose of the operation was to demonstrate the effective- ness of helicopter assaJt tactics-the Marine Corps' answer to taking and holding positions this age of atomic weapons and the H-Bomb. "Combat Town" is made up o' two distinct villages located well in the heart of the Marine Corps' 374 square mile base at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif. Divided by a drainage ditch, one is of Oriental atmosphere and the other more native to Europe Operation Pagoda took place or; the Oriental side. Organizations making up the task force were a helicopter assault platoon from the 2r-1 Marine Infantry Training Regiment and units from Aircraft, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. My place of observation was the second story of the pagoda located atop the hill at the North end of the village. From this vantage point, the entire village as well as the ridge and bilk to the South stretched before me. To my left was the village itself-narrow winding streets lined with closely packed adobe huts, some with red tiled roofs and others with thatch. A rickashaw lay deserted in the street-its owner had long taken cover with the rest of the villagers. In front of the pagoda was a hill covered with mounds of sun- hardened clay-this was Graveyard Hill. On top of the hill I could see the low silhouette of an enemy bunker, its machine gun facing South. Directly below the pagoda and to the left stood an enemy tank. It was camouflaged in a weird green and black pattern with an ominous Red Star on its turret. There was a suffocating stillness in the air and the only obvious sign of life was the enemy tankman whose head poked from the open hatch as he scanned the Southern horizon with his binoculars. As though the deadly silence could hold back its tension no longer, a voice on the loud-speaker began to set the stage for the mock assault against the village. "This is the village of Wonju," said the voice. If is a typical Oriental village and in spite of its size, it is an important sommunica- tion hub. The enemy knows this and will defend it to the last. It is the mission of our forces to capture the village and deny its use to the enemy. "For several days the village has been hit by high level strategic bombers. The rail line passing through the village has been cut by dive bombing. The enemy forces in the village and the local citizens have worked continually repairing roads and rails. It is the 'job of the helicopter assault troops to take the village by driving out or destroy- ing the enemy forces. 'The mission of taking the village has been assigned to the 2nd Helicopter Assault Platoon of 'How' Company. It will be reinforced with tanks, 3.5 rocket launchers, light machine gun- SO mm mortars, flame throwers, and air strikes will be on call . ." Suddenly the village came to life. An enemy tankman ran from a nearby house shouting orders to his comrade in the camouflaged tank. The air was filled with the familiar slapping sound of helicopter rotor blades as 14 of them passed overhead, circled and began set- ting down in the valley to the South. No sooner did the 'copters discharge their five-men assault teams than they were off making way for the next group of four to land. The teams were quick to assemble behind Gravyard Hill where they immediately began their advance on the bunker. Enemy artillery shells began to drop on the advancing riflemen but the first squad quickly secured the bunker with rifle grenades, three blasts from the flame thrower and a brief skirmish. The smoke and noise of battle were everywhere - the earth trembled as pre-set powder charges simulated artillery and mortar blasts Two tanks moved in from the South-one to the right of the vil- lage with the fourth squad and the other to the left with the second squad. The third squad moved through the center of the village in a house-to-house routing of enemy troops. Street fighting and hand-to-hand combat were prevalent but there was no wasted time or motion on the part of the Marines. The tank advancing on the left was knocked out, but not before it had marked finis to the enemy tank and its tankmen. One of the Marine tankmen was wounded and was carried to safety fc- evacua- tion by helicopter. From this point, the action moveJ fast with all four squads driving Friday, 41).-11 1, 1955 U. S. ON THE LOCAL CORPS-WIDE SCENE COVERAGE 77 14th ND CHAMPIONS!

For the Marine sports fan, this will be a busy weekend. Tomorrow afternoon, at one o'clock at Bloch Arena, the Kaneohe Marine wrestling team will attempt to grab its third team title in as many weeks. This team deserves your full support. Some, in fact most, of the men are from the Fourth Marines, with four or five from scattered MCAS outfits. These men are wrestlers, not actors. If you like the TV brand of the sport, with plenty of fake murder going on in the ring, then you will be disappointed at Block
