SANCTUARY CANDLE August Donor: Memorial: Saint Feast Days Last week the bulletin provided the Feast and Saints Days for the first seven days of August. Did you research on, prayed to, or learned about saints? Share with others the information about your saint or what worked for you in the research and prayer you did. By the way there may be more than one saint for the day. WEEK OF AUGUST 8 TO 14, 2016 AUGUST 8, 2016 - St. Dominic - (1170-1221). He was born at Calaruega, Spain, studied at the Univ. at Palencia, was probably ordained there while pursuing his studies and was appointed canon at Osma in 1199. After many failures he founded a new order, the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans). Canonized in 1234 by Gregory IX and patron of astronomers.

AUGUST 9, 2016 - St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross - (Edith Stein) (1891-1942) Born in Breslau, , was of a large Jewish family. Eventually she became interested in the Catholic , and in 1922, she was baptized at the Cathedral Church in Cologne, Germany. When the Nazis conquered Holland, Teresa was arrested, and, with her sister Rose, was sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Teresa died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz in 1942. Canonized in 1998 by Pope John Paul II.

AUGUST 10, 2016 - St. Lawrence – (225–258) -Was one of seven deacons who were in charge of giving help to the poor and the needy. When a persecution broke out, Pope St. Sixtus II (Aug 7) was condemned to death. Lawrence gave to the poor the rest of the money he had and even sold expensive vessels to have more to give away. In anger the Prefect of Rome condemned Lawrence to a slow, cruel death. He was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire that roasted his flesh little by little. He joked. "Turn me over. I'm done on this side!" Patron of deacons.

AUGUST 11, 2016 - St. Clare - (1194 – 1253), Borne Chiara Offreduccio and sometimes spelled Clair, Claire and is an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint . She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition, and wrote their Rule of Life, the first set of monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. Canonized in 1255 by Pope Alexander IV. Patroness of eye disease, goldsmiths, laundry, and television.

AUGUST 12, 2016 - St. Jane Frances de Chantel – (1572 – 1641) – was wife, mother, nun and founder of a religious community. Her mother died when Jane was 18 months old. At 21 she married Baron de Chantal, by whom she had six children, three of whom died in infancy. Husband was killed after seven years of marriage. When she was 32, she met St. . After three years Francis told her of his plan to found an institute of women which would be a haven for those whose health, age or other considerations barred them from entering the already established communities (Visitation nuns). Canonized in 1762 by Pope Clement XIII. Patroness of in-law problems; loss of parents; parents separated from children; and widows.

AUGUST 13, 2016 - St. Pontian – (200 – 235) – was a Roman who served as pope from 230 to 235. During his reign he held a synod which confirmed the excommunication of the great theologian in Alexandria. He was sent to the “unhealthy” island of Sardinia, where he died of harsh treatment. With him was Hippolytus (see below) with whom he was reconciled.

St. Hippolytus – (170 – 235) - He is a controversial figure who censured Pope St. Callistus I. Hippolytus was slain in Sardinia where he had been exiled for being elected as an , the first in the history of the Church. He was reconciled to the Church before his martyrdom.

AUGUST 14, 2016 - St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe – (1894 -1941) was a Polish Franciscan friar, who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the German death camp of Auschwitz, located in German-occupied Poland during World War II. He was active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, operating a radio station, and founding or running several other organizations and publications. Canonized in 1982 by

Pope John Paul II. Patron of drug addicts, prisoners, families, and the pro-life movement.

4th – 5th Grade Catechists Volunteer Needed

No prior experience needed and you do not need to have a family member in the program to be a catechist. Teens may also volunteer to help in classes as aides.

Classes Begin September 18 – April 30 th Sunday Mornings 9:30-10:45am

Top Ten Reasons You Should Become a Catechist

10. The best way to refresh and expand your own faith is to teach. 9. More than ever, children, teens, and adults need to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. 8. Children, teens, and adults need good role models in their life. It will also show your own family members that religious education is important to you! 7. You’ve got a lot to share! You don’t need a lot of book-learning. Your gift to the students will be sharing your own faith. 6. You’ll be provided with excellent resources and great support. You won’t be alone; catechists work in pairs and in addition, you have the Holy Spirit and all the teachings of the Church with you. 5. You’ll become an active part of one of the most active groups of the parish. You’ll get to know the other catechists as well as have the opportunity to get to know the members of our parish. 4. You’ll be practicing good stewardship by giving a precious resource—your time. It’s a great way to put your faith in action 3. You’ll be saving lives! Not to be too dramatic, but… 2. It is fun and it will leave you energized to bring your own faith alive. 1. it’s what we are called to do. Jesus said, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all

nations...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

This year children, young people, and adults, will sign up to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow in faith by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation. We are looking for teachers and assistants for Kindergarten and 4/5 Grade classes. We provide you with training, materials, and support. As you nurture the faith of our parish, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, “I receive much more than I give!” Please prayerfully consider this way to contribute to our parish! Contact the office for more information.
