OVERVIEW

We invite you to join the Peru Expedition which follows the AAAS & SIGMA XI GALAPAGOS EXPEDITION. Seeing Machu Picchu and exploring the extraordinary cultural and archaeological wonders of Peru is certainly a lifetime experience. We hope you will be able to join us! The Peru Expedition will include: • Leadership by Dr. Douglas Sharon, a Peru expert, and former director of the Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC-Berkeley and San Diego Museum of Man. • A city tour and visit to the outstanding Huaca Pucclana archaeological site. • Visits to extraordinary archaeological sites north from Lima, including Caral, now recognized as one of the most important sites in the , and sites near Trujillo and Chiclayo. • Visiting the heart of the at Cuzco and spectacular landscapes in the . • The crown jewel of in the Americas, Machu Picchu, plus the sites of Ollantaitambo, Sacsayhuaman, and others around Cuzco. Dr. Sharon will provide insightful commentary and lectures about Peru’s anthropological and archaeological heritage. Joining him will be excellent local guides. DAILY ITINERARY

DAY 1 USA TO LIMA, PERU Sun June 7 Depart USA gateway cities for Lima. Arrive Lima. Transfer to the Jose Antonio Hotel(1 night). DAY 2 LIMA TO BARRANCA Mon June 8 8:00 am Breakfast at our hotel and luggage out. 8:45 Trip orientation and introductions. 9:30 Have an introduction to Lima with a city tour including the Plaza de Armas and archaeological site. 12:30 pm Lunch at Huaca Puccllana. 2:00 Afternoon drive up the coast two hours to the town of Barranca, closely situated to the extraordinary site of Caral. 4:30 Arrive Hotel Chavin (1 night). 6:00 Slide lecture. 7:30 Dinner. DAY 3 CARAL & TRUJILLO Tues June 9 8:00 am Breakfast at the hotel. 9:00 Depart for the archaeological complex of Caral which archaeologists have recently discovered is part of the oldest in all of . This civilization arose in the Supe valley 4,500 to 5,000 years ago, making it one of the earliest city-states in the world, along with Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China. 12 Noon Return to our hotel at Barranca for lunch. 2:00 pm Depart up the North Coast of Peru to Trujillo. At Sechin see the stone walls covered with 500 carved monoliths. A major battle is portrayed with soldiers depicted in many different positions and conditions. 4:00 Continue to Trujillo. 6:30 Arrive Trujillo. Hotel Los Conquistadores, Trujillo (2 nights). Dinner. (B,L,D) DAY 4 TRUJILLO Wed June 10 7:30 am Breakfast at the hotel. 8:30 Visit the Moche of the Moon. Lunch. Afternoon visit to see , the largest adobe city in the world, and the reed boats of the Huanchaco fisherman. 6:30 pm Slide lecture by Dr. Sharon Dinner. (B,L,D) DAY 5 CHICLAYO Thurs June 11 730 am Breakfast at hotel and luggage out. 8:30 Depart for Chiclayo. Arrive and have a city tour and visit to the Witches Market. Lunch in Chiclayo. 2:30 Visit to the Museum which houses the Lord of Sipan collection, one of the finest gold collections in the world. Check in at El Gran Chiclayo Hotel (1 night). 6:30 Slide lecture by Dr. Sharon Dinner at hotel. (B,L,D) DAY 6 LIMA TO CUZCO - - OLLANTAITAMBO Fri June 12 6:00 am Breakfast and luggage out. Transfer to the Chiclayo Airport. Check in for Lan Peru flight for Lima. LanPeru flight departs. Arrive Lima. Take a connecting flight to Cuzco. Arrive in Cuzco. Drive through the Andes to the Sacred Valley. Lunch. Visit the Ollantaitambo archaeological site. Overnight at Hotel La Casona de Yucay (1 night) in Urubamba. Dinner on your own. (B,L) DAY 7 MACHU PICCHU Sat June 13 6:00 am Breakfast buffet at the hotel and luggage out. Take your carryon as an overnight bag with you. (Main luggage will return to Cuzco by bus and be checked at hotel). 6:30 Depart for the train station. 7:00 Arrive at station. 8:00 Train departs to Machu Picchu. 9:20 Arrive Machu Picchu Station. Check in at Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel (1 night). Transfer to top and take a guided tour of Machu Picchu. 1:30 Lunch at Machu Picchu Ruinas (Sanctuary) Hotel. 2:30 Afternoon return visit to Machu Picchu. 5:30 Return to MP Pueblo Hotel. 7:30 Dinner. (B,L,D) DAY 8 MACHU PICCHU TO CUZCO Sun June 14 American breakfast at hotel. Visit the new Museum or at leisure for personal interests. Lunch at Totos House. 2:15 pm Depart hotel for train station. 3:55 Return train journey to Ollanta Station. 5:21 Board motorcoach to continue to Cuzco 7:00 Arrive Cuzco and check into Casa Andina Classic -- Cathedral Hotel (2 nights). Dinner on your own. (B,L) DAY 9 CUZCO - CHINCHERO Mon June 15 Breakfast at hotel. This morning, we will drive through spectacular Andean scenery to Chinchero. See the weaving demonstration. Return to Cuzco. Lunch on your own. Afternoon for more exploration in Cuzco and personal interests. 7:30 Buffet dinner at Tunupa Restaurant with folkloric show. (B,D) DAY 10 CUZCO & LIMA Tues June 16 Breakfast buffet at hotel and luggage out. Morning for continued exploration in Cuzco including Sacsayhuaman and Koricancha temple. Early snack lunch on your own. 11:30 Transfer to Cuzco airport. Check in for Lan flight. 1:20 pm Flight departs. 2:40 Arrive Lima. Transfer to Miraflores for time at leisure for personal interests. Return transfer to the airport. Check in for your return flight to the USA. Flights depart in the late evening. (B) DAY 11 ARRIVE USA. Wed June 17 Flights arrive in the USA. COSTS & CONDITIONS

Peru Expedition Fee: $3,695 per person (twin share) + Peru in-tour flights $455 per person. International flights are approx. $695 + tax per person, Miami/Lima/Miami. Galapagos participants fly Miami/Guayaquil with a return Lima/Miami (for approx. the same $695 + tax per person price) + one additional flight Guayaquil/Lima for approx. $350. Air Fares Are Subject to Change. Singles: We encourage singles to register twin share. If you do not have a roommate, you must pay the $595 additional cost for single accommodations.

Peru Trip Fee Includes: Land transport; group airport transfers; accommodations twin share in first class and country-style hotels which reflect the heritage of Peru; breakfasts, 7 lunches, 6 dinners; group entrance fees; tips to local guides and drivers; baggage handling; leadership, administration. Peru Trip Fee Does Not Include: Air fare (quoted separately); independent in-transfers; some meals; personal items such as alcoholic beverages, laundry, phone calls, bottled water or soda, snacks; passport, personal insurance; gratuity to tour leader; or foreign airport departure tax ($30). What to Expect: This expedition is for the travel enthusiast who would enjoy exploring and learning about the fascinating cultural heritage of Peru, with a special look at Machu Picchu and the extraordinary archaeological sites of northern Peru. Have an introduction in Lima, then travel up the coast to Caral, Trujillo, and Chiclayo. Also explore Cuzco, heart of the Inca empire, plus nearby villages, and archaeological sites in the spectacular Andean highlands of Peru. Travel is by motorcoach, train to Machu Picchu, and scheduled flights with daily outings on foot. Archaeological sites may include some stairs. Temperatures will be in the 60’s to 80’s during the day, and may drop into the low 50’s in the Andes at night. We will spend a few of days at elevations from 7,500 to 11,000 feet.
