The top step can be opened by removing the four screws in the top. These screws are not “screwed” down, and can be lifted up by hand. The wooden step can then be taken off. The dipstick is located on the port side of the engine. The coolant reservoir on Black Pearl is located to port, near the front of the motor. The header tank pressure cap can be seen midway back on the port side.
