In order to prevent or mitigate exposures, a consultation may lead to specific actions, such as restricting use of or replacing water supplies; intensifying environmental sampling; restricting site access; or removing the contaminated material. In addition, consultations may recommend additional public health actions, such as conducting health surveillance activities to evaluate exposure or trends in adverse health outcomes; conducting biological indicators of exposure studies to assess exposure; and providing health education for health care providers and community members. Peak Bagging: (complete award size: 8" x 6") Program and Awards Offered by the HIGH ADVENTURE TEAM Greater Los Angeles Area Council Boy Scouts of America The High Adventure Team of the Greater Los Angeles Area Council-Boy Scouts of America is a volunteer group of Scouters which operates under the direction of GLAAC-Camping Services. Its mission is to develop and promote outdoor activities within the Council and by its many Units. It conducts training programs, sponsors High Adventure awards, publishes specialized literature such as Hike Aids and The Trail Head and promotes participation in summer camp, in High Adventure activities such as backpacking, peak climbing, and conservation, and in other Council programs. Anyone who is interested in the GLAAC-HAT and its many activities is encouraged to direct an inquiry to the GLAAC-Camping Services or visit our web site at http://www.glaac-hat.org/. NCCS III, F5 or F6. MICHAEL HELMS Washington-Cascade Mountains Witches Tower, Northeast Face. In August, 1976, Bob Gundrum, Paul McKnight, Dave Fox and I completed a new route on this face, starting in the lower left of the face. We had several hundred feet of easier climbing until we crossed the central depression to the right. Higher we recrossed the depression to the left (F8) and followed up a dihedral (FS). From there the climbing eased to the summit. NCCS II, F8. DUANE CONSTANTINO Three O’clock Rock, Darrington Area. In April Tom Saunders and I completed a new four-pitch route on this formation, “Tidbits.” Some- what left of the Big Tree 1 route, we climbed a dike on an apron below several large roofs. Near the top of the slab, we moved right to belay. We followed the slab to just below a roof (FlO), crossed the roof to a horizontal crack, proceeded up and left on a crescent-shaped ledge (F9) and moved right to belay. We climbed left on a ledge for 20 feet, diag- onaled back right to a small tree and ascended left of the tree to a belay (FlO). We climbed to a roof, which we crossed on the left, diagonaled back right to a small tree and ascended left of the tree to a belay (FlO). -

Rumors of marine reptiles, trilobite mass death assemblages, and even dinosaurs in Yellowstone have lured a team of paleontologists in the same way that the legends of "Colter's Hell" and Jim Bridger's "Tall Tales" have attracted many before. Compared to other natural resources at Yellowstone National Park, fossils have received little attention. Except for the research conducted on the petrified forests, Yellowstone's fossils have remained a relative "paleo-incognita" more than 125 years after the park's establishment. As this survey demonstrates, the lack of paleontological research is not due to a lack of significant fossils. Perhaps historian Aubrey Haines provided the best explanation in his comment, "Past administrations preferred that resources not in the public's eye be left alone" (pers. -

Copyright 1997 Uinta National Forest Forward We have no way of knowing who first named the area called the Uinta National Forest. We do know that the word “Uinta” comes from a Native American word meaning “pine tree” or “pine forest.” The forested areas, wonderful streams, meadows, striking mountains and rock formations, along with the native wildlife, fish and plants make this National Forest one of the finest lands that we have in our entire country! We expect the early inhabitants relied very heavily on the natural resources that were produced on the Uinta. Their lives depended on the wild animals, fish, plants, and clean water that came from the Uinta. Products from the Forest were undoubtedly used for clothing, shelter, and heat for warmth and cooking. While little is known about the early people’s use of the Forest, much more is known about the settlers that moved here from the East. These people were very dependent on forest resources to carve out a settlement suitable for their needs. -

Center for Accelerated Studies (CAS) What is CAS? The Center for Accelerated Studies is a full-time gifted magnet program for students in grades 4-6 from across the district, which was created to address the unique instructional needs of students with high academic ability and/or potential. It serves about 180 students who have demonstrated high proficiency in mathematics, science, and language arts. CAS provides the opportunity for students to move beyond the core curriculum, as they have demonstrated mastery of grade-level curriculum. Unique enrichment activities are provided that are particularly appropriate for students who learn at a more rapid pace, desire to delve deeply into curricular topics, and work as practitioners in Provo Peaks various fields of study. The flexible and more rapid pacing Elementary in the CAS classrooms meets the needs of accelerated students. The CAS students become a close-knit group, as 665 East Center Street, Provo they have opportunities for many friendships with intellectual and social peers. The students learn to respect the differences, gifts, and achievements of peers. The vision of Provo Peaks is to perform on a metacognitive level. The mission of Provo Peaks is to foster a Who benefits from CAS? culture of pride in ourselves and our school. By understanding our strengths and weaknesses, we are accountable for our own growth and we Students who enjoy being challenged and learning at can achieve and surpass high expectations. Whitaker Department of Plant and Animal Sciences Master of Science We determined the diet contributions of grasses, forbs and shrubs for three herds of bighorn sheep along the Wasatch Front, Utah using stable isotope techniques and determined the electivity values for different forage species for four herds. Forbs were generally the most common forage eaten across all herds while shrubs were the least used forage resource. The Provo Peak and Mount Nebo herds used grasses, forbs and shrubs at proportions similar to other bighorn sheep populations across the west, while the Antelope Island herd used forbs at higher levels than any other local herd. -

As I have traveled around Utah for work and pleasure, many times I have observed vehicles parked alongside the road with many people climbing around an outcrop or walking up a trail in a canyon.
