What is journalism? Journalism is a public good that provides citizens with information to make the best possible decisions about themselves, their communities, and their government. The major emphasizes both the theory and practice of journalism. Students receive a thorough grounding in the ethics and traditions of journalism as well as the nuts and bolts of reporting and writing.

I'm currently a breaking/trending news reporter at MassLive, a digital news outlet that covers all of Massachusetts, where I work out of the Springfield newsroom. I report on the entire state, but specialize my coverage on Easthampton, Northampton and the weather. I try to focus my reporting on issues relating to crime and law enforcement.

The fall semester of my senior year at UMass, I did a co-op at , where I reported for the ’s metro section. At the same time, I started working at WBUR, Boston’s NPR affiliate, where I worked as a digital producer on the station’s general news desk and for its national program Here & Now. I worked at WBUR through my last semester at UMass and then moved to Washington, D.C. for an internship at CNN’s political unit. While at UMass, I: • Was night editor and then news editor at the Massachusetts Daily Collegian. • Was news editor at UVC-TV19 • Was a mentor to local high school students in an afterschool multimedia journalism program

During my time at UMass, I completed my journalism degree while working as a communications assistant for the honors college. I was able to take what I learned in the classroom and apply it directly to telling the stories of the many different voices that make up the community. While taking electives I developed an interest in technology and media studies. During my senior year, I was able to participate in an independent study with journalism professor Joshua Braun, where I received invaluable experience researching, writing, and concentrating on media studies.

After graduating from UMass, I landed a job as a content specialist and SEO analyst with a focus on cyber security and technology. I research, write, and promote articles, eBooks, and other digital content as well as run marketing campaigns on our social media and professional platforms. My day to day job consists of reading, researching, writing, and creating digital content.
