NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Aquatic Vascular Plant Species Distribution Maps
Appendix 11.5.1: Aquatic Vascular Plant Species Distribution Maps These distribution maps are for 116 aquatic vascular macrophyte species (Table 1). Aquatic designation follows habitat descriptions in Haines and Vining (1998), and includes submergent, floating and some emergent species. See Appendix 11.4 for list of species. Also included in Appendix 11.4 is the number of HUC-10 watersheds from which each taxon has been recorded, and the county-level distributions. Data are from nine sources, as compiled in the MABP database (plus a few additional records derived from ancilliary information contained in reports from two fisheries surveys in the Upper St. John basin organized by The Nature Conservancy). With the exception of the University of Maine herbarium records, most locations represent point samples (coordinates were provided in data sources or derived by MABP from site descriptions in data sources). The herbarium data are identified only to township. In the species distribution maps, town-level records are indicated by center-points (centroids). Figure 1 on this page shows as polygons the towns where taxon records are identified only at the town level. Whorled Water-Milfoil, Myriophyllum Verticillatum
Natural Heritage Whorled Water-milfoil & Endangered Species Myriophyllum verticillatum L. Program www.mass.gov/nhesp State Status: Endangered Federal Status: None Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: The Whorled Water-milfoil (Myriophyllum verticillatum) is an aquatic herb of the Haloragaceae family. The plant grows submersed in water, except for the terminal inflorescence, which emerges above the surface. Small, sessile flowers are oppositely arranged along the uppermost portion of the spike. The stems are elongate and narrow, often branched, and bear whorled leaves that are pinnately dissected into fine segments. AIDS TO IDENTIFICATION: Distinguishing the various species of water-milfoils is difficult, especially in the vegetative condition, and a technical manual and an expert should always be consulted. This is one of a few water-milfoils that produce turions, which are small, bulb-like propagules that allow the plant to spread vegetatively. In this species, the turions are club-shaped (wider at the tips than at the base). Another diagnostic character is the presence of consistently deeply lobed floral bracts that greatly exceed (are more than twice as long as) the length of the female flowers. The combination of these characters, plus the presence of whorled leaves, serves to distinguish this species from the other water-milfoils in Massachusetts. Crow, Garrett, and C. SIMILAR SPECIES: Common water-milfoils could easily be confused with the Whorled Water-milfoil. For example, the native Lowly Water-milfoil (Myriophyllum humile) differs in having leaves that are strictly alternate, rather than whorled as in the Whorled Water-milfoil. -

AQUATIC INVASIVE PLANTS INFORMATION AND IDENTIFICATION TIPS Alberta Lake Management Society PO Box 4283, Edmonton AB T6E 4T3 www.alms.ca INTRODUCTION This document is intended to provide an identification resource for aquatic invasive plants and encourage Alberta lake-users to watch for these species. The importance and issues associated with all aquatic plants are outlined and the implications of infestations of invasive species are discussed. We highlight four invasive aquatic plant species of concern for Alberta lakes: • Hydrilla • Curly-leafed Pondweed • Eurasian Water milfoil • Flowering Rush Detailed information on the plant is included for each species as well as a comparison between the invasive species and a similar species native to Alberta. AQUATIC VEGETATION: BENEFITS AND ISSUES What do aquatic plants do for the lake? Aquatic vegetation has many important functions within an aquatic ecosystem. Many aquatic plants provide food for fish or aquatic invertebrates, and are a key member in the food chain for these ecosystems. Many small aquatic invertebrates feed from and lay their eggs on macrophytes. In addition to food sources, aquatic plants provide shelter for young and small fish from larger predators. They are also used as spawning areas for fish and amphibians. Emergent aquatic plant such as cattails, sedges and rushes improve shoreline stability and reduce shoreline erosion. The presence of these emergent plants as well as submerged varieties, aid improving water clarity due to the binding of roots with the lake’s substrate. -

GLENBOGAL AQUATIC PLANT LIST Plant Name Common Name Description Variety Variegated green and creamy iris blade-like foliage. Sweet flag tolerates Acorus Calamus shade and is frost hardy. Compact growing habit. Height: 60 to 90cms. Sweet flag Variegatus Prefers moist soil but will tolerate up to 15cms of water above the crown. Stunning purple/blue iris-like flowers early in the season. Marginal Sea This green version of the Acorus family has deep green foliage. It tolerates shade and is evergreen in many climates. Fantastic for Green Japanese Acorus Gramineus Green keeping colour all winter. Height: up to 30cms Plant spread: Restricted Rush by basket size Depth: moist soil to approx. 10cms (will grow in deeper water but may not do as well) Marginal A Ogon has light green foliage accented with bright yellow stripes. It tolerates shade and is evergreen in many climates. Height: up to 30cms Acorus Gramineus Ogon Gold Japanese Rush Plant spread: Restricted by basket size Depth: moist soil to approx. 20cms (can grow in deeper water if required) Great plant to remove excess nutrient. Marginal A A low growing plant with dainty purple frilly leaves and deep blue spikes that flower in spring and early summer. Prefers semi shade.
