Leigh Dunker Winner At Hansford, Minnesota South Dakota's Leigh Dunker won the fifth annual Hanaford, Minnesota tournament recently in a play-off game with Gus Magnuson of Canby, 50-39. Defending champ Frank Stinson of Minneapolis, Minnesota shot a 65.4% ringer average and finished third. Magnuson was runner-up. Dunker has won the South Dakota championship 21 times. Stinson lost to Dunker and Magnu- son. Murray Arndt took third in Class B,

Woolery And Bailey Take Group Titles In Mosswood Class D (Northern California) Ken Woolery won the championship trophy chalking up a perfect 5-0 record, while fellow Sonoma County club member Bud Bailey was forced into overtime in Group II to reign supreme in a 4-way playoff at the Mosswood Park courts in Oakland, California. Jim Cooper of Sacramento won a playoff game over Lee Bain of Santa Clara County to pace the Group III pitchers, and George Kinkel, Bain's team-mate was perfect in 5 games in Group IV to heist the first place cup. Newcomer John Howell of Sacramento pitched the high percentage game of the tournament, a fine 47.7% effort. Ohio State Championship, Greenville, Ohio-Sept. 1-2-3-4 The Darke County Horseshoe Club and the City of Greenville have again invited the Ohio Buckeye State Association to hold the 1972 Ohio State Cham- pionship tournament at City Park, Greenville, Ohio over Labor Day week-end. (For the 16th consecutive year). All entrants must be Ohio residents (1 year or more) and, except for the Junior, hold a 1972 NHPA (Ohio) membership card. (As usual, cards will be made available at the courts). ENTRY FEE AND QUALIFYING: Entry fee $5.00; qualifying 100 shoes begins Friday afternoon, September 1st from 2 to 9 p. m., and continues on Saturday morning, September 2nd until 12 noon, the deadline for entry in Men's division. (See below for Ladies and Juniors). CONVENTION: The annual meeting of the Ohio Buckeye State Association will be held Saturday afternoon, September 2nd, as soon as possible after all entrants to the tournament have been qualified. Gonzales Takes Third Straight No. California Tourney; Maintains All-Winning Formula Diminutive Jesse Gonzales continued his undefeated string started at the Western States Open at Eureka in January by larruping seven opponents at the Ole Hansen Open in Seaside, California. Gonzales, pitching for the Santa Clara County Club, averaged 73.7% for the tourney. Fred Lavett of Seaside lost only to Jesse and pitched a fine 63.5% for the tourney. The day was sad- dened, as Ole Hansen, in whose honor the tourney is held, passed away a few days previous to his Open. Ole, a past president of the Northern California Association, and organizer of the Seaside Club, will be sorely missed by all enthusiasts of the game he loved so much. Ellis Griggs Wins Spring Warm-up Open At Sterling - Rock Falls, Illinois Ellis Griggs regained the title over Melvin Utley in the Spring Warm-up Open at Sterling-Rock Falls, Illinois on Memorial Day. Ralph Maylahn defeated Glenn Henton for third place in Class A. Woodrow Martin defeated Ernie Danielson 50-38 for the Class B championship. Bill Martin defeated Don Grove 50 to 24 for the Class C championship. Bob Sproston defeated Art Norris 50 to 35 for the Class D championship. Reedy Undefeated In Gilbo Open - Tacoma, Washington John Reedy of Edmonds, Washington, who set such a hot pace in the recent Winetrout Winter Classic, continued his winning ways by going undefeated in the Henry Gilbo Open held at Tacoma, Washington. In the first game in the ladies class between Sarah Giacomini and Millie Kuhne, Sarah had 60.6% and Millie had 66.6% for a total of 63.6%! Best percentage game for Women ever pitched in the State of Washington. Kansas - Aug. 26 The Marion County Fair Open tournament will be held on August 26th with Class B starting at 9 a. m. and Class A starting at approximately 2 p.m. at the Marion County fairgrounds, Hillsboro, Kansas. A Dream Come True Lance Astor, Tribal Chairman of the Reno - Sparks Indian Colony, Reno, Nevada and President of the Indian Colony Horseshoe League, has finally had a dream come true. An enthusiastic horseshoe player, he had dreamed about having clay courts in the Anderson Indian Park in Reno one day. He drew up the plans and with the help of Boyce Miller, cement contractor of Reno, who is also a top horseshoe pitcher, work was begun the last week of May to install eight clay courts at the parks. These are the only permanent clay courts in the Reno Sparks area. With finishing touches being done by volunteers from the Reno Indian Colony, the courts were dedicated on June 24 and 25, when Lance hosted his first tournament. Congratulations are in order to Lance, his wife, Jessie, and children, who are horseshoe players, and all the Indians for a wonderful job. New England Director Reports .... By Peter shepard Your director had the pleasure to see for the first time the State of Con- necticut form a class for the Ladies and also for the Juniors.Mr. Van Dine and Mr. Wagner are to be commended for the great progress their state has made and to be encouraged as they have so much more yet to accomplish. To all tournament directors, please do not forget the final results of tournaments in your states must be forwarded to Mr. Roger Bolduc, to each state secretary, the News Digest and also to me. We all did a great job in this direction last year, so let's not fall behind. Let us continue in the same way. From the Connecticut warm up I went to the New Hampshire warm up and it was really great to be back to Keene, New Hampshire. This is where I first became interested in horseshoes thanks to Carl Steinfelt and the St. Pierre Manufacturing corporation. From there I travelled on to Springfield, Vermont. As it was, the weather had slowed their tournament down a little, but they were able to finish on schedule. From there I returned to Sutton and the Hertage Recreation Center. An exhibition was held at Leicester, Massachusetts in honor of the 250th Anniversary. We had top NHPA players on hand and your director was really pleased when he was presented a beautiful trophy on this occasion. I accepted on behalf of all the members of the NHPA because we all work together for the betterment of the sport. It was wonderful to see so many people amassed for such a celebration and to find so many enjoying our sport of pitching horseshoes. Our sincere thanks to St. Pierre Manufacturing Corporation for donating several sets of pitching horseshoes to the Recreation Department of the Town of Leicester, Massachusetts to be used in their Parks Department summer program.

Local Clubs

Glendive, Montana now has a horseshoe club affiliated with Montana NHPA East. Their organizational meeting was held at their old courts on May 30, 1972. They are in the process of constructing eight new courts near the tennis courts just east of Buttrey Foods on the west bank of the Yellowstone river. Plans are to add four more courts later if needed. The leaders in the organization of the club are Don Burgess, 220 W. Cle- ment, Glendive, and Matt Aspenlieder, 517 N. Merrill, Glendive, Montana. Tournaments already played in Eastern Montana were at Fairview, Mon- tana on June 18, and at Sidney, Montana on July 30. The Eastern Divisional championships will be played at Glendive, Montana on August 20. It is urged that all Montana horseshoe pitchers encourage more members for the NHPA, especially those entering tournaments for the first time.

Wisconsin State Meet — Green Bay — Sept. 1-2-3-4 The Green Bay, Wisconsin club will host the Wisconsin State Horseshoe tournament on September 1, 2, 3, 4 in Green Bay, Wisconsin This is the first time Green Bay has held a tournament. The city was a- warded the tourney at last fall's meeting. This will be an NHPA sanctioned tournament. There will be eight (8) Men's classes and two (2) Ladies classes. Green Bay has eight (8) new clay courts built by the Green Bay Horseshoe Club which has a membership of eighty (80) people. DeWitt, Nebraska Centennial Tournament Title Won By Don McCance Don McCance of Lexington, Nebraska, came in with a 7-0 record to win the Centennial Open Tournament held at DeWitt, Nebraska June 11 as part of its Centennial Celebration. Sixty-nine players participated on the 18 clay courts that were erected especially for the tournament. Over 200 spectators, many in centennial attire, watched from the sidelines. The oldest player, Melvin Hoyt, and the player from the greatest distance, Ralph Fleharty, were presented with Vise-Grip wrenches. Other prizes were won in the drawing by Bob Johnsen, Mike Crook, and Norman Hagemeier. Four trophies were presented in Classes A and B and three in each of the other classes. Fontaine Filches Los Gatos Class C (No. Calif.) Lou Fontaine of the Santa Clara County Club made the crucial points when he needed to and edged out Don Muenchow, Jim Adams and Pete Quintana to finish with 4 wins in 5 games pitched at beautiful Oak Meadow Park, Los Gatos. Lou, 1971 Northern California champion, grew stronger as the tightly bunched 6-man group ran out the string of games, and clinched victory in the final game. Don Muenchow of the Mosswood club compiled the high tourney percentage, and the high game of 53.6% to place second in this the 18th North- ern California tourney of the '72 season. Arnold Coleman of Stockton grabbed Group II honors and Paul Jensen of Seaside topped the Group III gladiators with a perfect 5-0 record. Manitoba Provincial Open - Brandon, Manitoba Aug. 12 The Manitoba Provincial Open tournament will be held at the Exhibition grounds, Brandon, Manitoba on Saturday, August 12. 50-shoe pitching to obtain the classifications will begin at 10 a. m. Tourna- ment begins at 12 o'clock. Contestants will be divided into as many groups of eight as allowable depending on the number of entries. Wetherbee Sweeps Colorado Springs Open Tournament Dick Wetherbee handily defended his Class A title in the annual Colorado Springs Open tournament held June 24 and 25. Class B, play ended in a three- way tie between Abrams, Holmes and Bustus with Bustus emerging victorious from the play-off. Otterbach won Class C and Rader in Class D. Damarin Winner Of Tremont, Illinois Turkey Festival Open Meet The final results of the Annual Tremont Turkey Festival Open tournament held on the City Park courts in Tremont, Illinois, June 10, revealed Elden Da- marin of Peoria, Illinois and current Illinois State champion, to be the winner with a 7-0 record. Class B was won by Henry Franke, veteran ringer master from Centralia, Illinois with 6 wins and 1 loss. Lloyd Ingersoll of Mason City, Illinois and son of the late Paul Ingersoll, former Illinois titleholder, presided over Class C with 7 straight victories. Down in Class D it was Chauncey Tisdale of Manito, Illinois who edged out William Rebbec of Peoria, Illinois by 1 point for honors. 32 men took part in this tournament played under clear skies with cool weather prevailing. Bill Cessna Wins Baldwin Park, Calif. $600.00 Handicap In a 22-man round-robin tournament which included pitchers of varied ability from 35% to 73% ratings, Bill Cessna, with 56% emerged the victor and earned $250.00. It required only 656 shoes for Cessna to attain victory, four shoes less than the 660 required by Chuck Tucker, winner of the Handi- cap last year. Clarence Cummins with 62% picked up $125.00 for second place. Lew Mahlstedt with 44% came in third and earned $75.00. Jerry Schneider with 73% and Hank Drogemuller with 52% tied for fourth place and agreed to split the $50.00 fourth place and the $30.00 fifth place monies. Walter Krowel with 58% and John Balzer with 63% tied for sixth place and $20.00 plus one $10.00 consolation prize. Eston Brown with 68%, Jim Lowes with 43%, Mike Velarde with 50%, and Wally Shipley with 42%, received consolation prizes of $10.00 each. Eston Brown gave the best single game performance with a 93.7%, fol- lowed by Bill Cessna with 88.8%, John Balzer with 87.5%, Mike Velarde with 87.5%, Chuck Bailey with 86.3%. Boudreau Play-Off Victor Over Traquar For Annual New Hampshire Spring Warm-Up Championship The Annual New Hampshire State Spring Warm-Up Horseshoe Pitching Tournament was held June 6, 1972 at Wheelock Park in Keene, N. H. and sponsored by the Keene Horseshoe Club. It was a good tournament with 44 entrants. "Al" Boudreau, the New Hamp- shire flip artist from Rindge, was the winner of the Men's "A" Division for the second year in a row by virtue of a play-off victory over Bob Traquar of Surry, N. H. Darrel Flagg of Keene was winner of "B" Division, Albert Chickering of Keene was winner of "C" Division, Frank Bruso of Raymond was winner of "D" Division and Bruce Debondville of Jaffrey was winner of "E" Division. Debbie Pickering of Keene was the winner of the Ladies' Class "A" Division. Skip Traquair of Surry was the winner of the Junior Boy's Division by winning two out of three games from K. Maison, Michigan Champ Cops Water Wonderland Meet When the smoke of fireworks slowly lifted from the battle field, "Doc" Mai- son, Warren, Michigan, was the tired but triumphant victor. Meet was played at Burr Oak, Michigan, June 17-18. Not unlike last year, when the Water Wonderland National Open classic finished in a 3-way tie, the same situation nearly developed again. Maison, Smith and Harold Anthony, of Ohio, were all tied with 9 wins and a loss going into the final round. Smith edged Anthony in a very close contest, while Maison staved off a strong challenge from Clarence Bellman of Indiana. Mai- son, not to be denied, defeated Smith 51 to 35, or a similar margin for championship title. Ties seemed to dominate the tournament. Howard Johnson, Nashville, having a fine season, eliminated Don Drake of Colon, Michigan in another playoff of a tie situation in Class A. The canny old veteran, Lee Jacobs of Belleville, Michigan, sailed through 11 games, undefeated, to win Class B honors, while John Hess of Port Huron, Michigan performed the same feat in the Class C. Casey Moubray of Lansing, Michigan, in his first year of competition, south- pawed his way to an exciting playoff win over Paul Hackman, Burr Oak to take the Class D crown. Irene Ostrander of Lansing, Michigan, ruled the women's division, winning all 5 games in the handicap competition. Steve staley of Piqua, Ohio, won the junior boys title in undefeated fashion. Henton Repeats In Eau Claire, Wise. Open Tournament Glen Henton of Iowa won the Annual Eau Claire, Wisconsin Open tournament for the second time, losing only to Frank Stinson of Minnesota 51-25. Bill Glass, Wisconsin champion was runner-up. He also had the high single game, hitting 63 ringers out of 72 shoes against Stinson for a ringer percentage of 87.5. The weather was ideal. In Memoriam The Northern California Association lost one of their most ardent boosters when Capt. Ole Hansen passed away at the age of 64. Ole loved the sport of horseshoe pitching, and although he never excelled, he was instrumental in establishing the NCHPA constitution and by-laws and successfully organized a large club at Seaside, California. He also served as President of the NCHPA. Three years ago, the Seaside Club honored Ole by naming their annual Sea- side Open after him. He is survived by his wife Emily of Monterey, California. Ole's enthusiasm for horseshoes will be sorely missed by us all. 5fC Sfc Word has been received of the passing of Russ Melton in Iowa. Russ was a member of the Northern California Association for several years in the 60's and his many friends here were shocked to hear of his untimely passing. Gonzales Grabs Golden Gate Classic Championship Jesse Gonzales, flip flop artist extraordinaire, won his 4th straight Northern California title and continued his unbeaten string by chalking up 5 straight wins to reach 32 straight victories. Jesse was challenged only by fast im- proving Marty Santos, who managed 3 wins on the new clay in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Jesse pitched the high percentage game of 83.3% in this the grand-daddy of all Northern California tourneys. Bill McNally had a flawless day to grab still another Class A trophy. Jack Loomis took Class B honors in a playoff over Ed Brazzi. Jim Saunders was tough in the playoff game with John Saxby to cop the Class C-l title, and Carl Halunen won his first championship insignia in Class C-2. Jim Cooper of Sacramento won the Class D laurels. Westbrook "Vunderful Vunderful" In Los Gatos Class D (Northern California) Frank Westbrook had the savvy (and the ringers) to come through in the closing innings of his games to edge out Paul Jensen of Seaside on the newly clayed Oak Meadow Park courts in Los Gatos. Jensen pitched the best tournament percentage of the day but lost a crucial game and had to settle for second spot. John Morehouse won 5 straight contests in Group II competition and Lester Cagle and Bob Chaffin of the new Stockton Club reigned supreme in Groups III and IV. This was the 22nd tourney of the new season in Northern California using the no-qualifying method of play. Courts have been fully utilized in almost every tourney, all tourneys start at 10:00 a.m., and afternoon groups are usually needed to accommodate the large entry list. Our large Class C and Class D contingents have been able to compete in many more tournaments, and rarely have we had to turn anyone away because of lack of facilities. Gonzales Pressed, But Wins Arroyo Viejo Open (Northern California) After two years of frustration, the Northern California Class AA pitchers almost caught up with Jesse Gonzales, but after losing an unheard of two games in one tourney (his first losses this year), Jesse came through in a playoff game to edge out Marty Santos after Marty had disposed of Jack Seymour in a three-way logjam for first. Marty forced the overtime session with a pulsating 50-47 victory in the final game of the closely matched 6-man group on the excellent clay at Arroyo Viejo Park in Oakland. Jesse lost his first game this year to Rueben Lee when Lee tossed a 71.4% game at him in winning 51-42. In the Santos-Gonzales setto, Marty scorched the stake with 13 straight doubles to grab a sizable lead, but had to hang on to thwart Jesse's finishing kick. Marty recorded a sizzling 77.5% effort to Jesse's fine 74.5%. To attest to the quality of the competition, Mel Ristau wound up with a 69.8% for the tourney but won only two games as did Verdan Zelmar averaging 67.2%. There were only 4 games under 60% in the 32 games played. Bill Mc- Nally continued his mastery of Class A by registering 5 straight on his home courts, however, Ray Nelson finished strong to wind up with only one loss. Curt Day Wins Wingate Open In Easy Manner World champ, Curt Day of Frankfort, Indiana, won the championship with seven wins and no losses, while averaging 86.6 percent. Dahlene Of Kansas Interviewed On Cablevision Program Alvin Dahlene of Lawrence, Kansas appeared on SUNFLOWER CABLE- VISION at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 27. Sunflower Cablevision is a new facility in Lawrence, Kansas and just about six months old. He appeared for about five or six minutes and then it was on tape in the evening of June 25. That makes him the first horseshoe pitcher in that area to appear on Cablevision. The interview covered his many years as a pitcher (now in his 53rd season), also his many records and art of pitching horseshoes.
