FOUR YEAR OLD ANDREW OBERLE ­observed his mommy, Caroline, having one of those days when everything seemed to go wrong. It was July 16, 2014 and as she came down the stairs in the morning to Fmake breakfast, she broke her little toe. Later on, the car wouldn’t start. But Andrew’s parents­ had noticed a few slight changes that didn’t quite make sense. On a trip to the beach two weeks earlier he had some difficulty­ when walking across the sand to the ­shoreline. The first night they got home he woke up itching with no apparent rash.
