California Elections Update

Last night, Republicans maintained their majorities in both chambers of the U.S. Congress and Republican Donald Trump won the presidency.

While many precincts have fully reported this morning, county election officials across California won’t know exactly how many vote-by-mail ballots have been cast until Monday. State law dictates that a mail-in ballot postmarked by election day and received within three days, must be counted. With Friday being Veteran’s Day (a federal holiday with no mail delivery) the extra day spells more waiting time in tight races. Ultimately, county elections officials have approximately one month to complete their certification work. This means that many of these races are still undecided.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris handily won the open U.S. Senate Seat, which now begs the question of who Governor Jerry Brown will appoint to fill her place.

On the federal level, Congressional incumbent Republicans Jeff Denham, Darrell Issa, Steve Knight and David Valadao are all hanging on in what were identified as vulnerable seats. On the Democratic front, Ro Khanna outpaced incumbent Mike Honda in the South Bay. Also, in the open Compton area seat, Attorney Nanette Barragan is currently leading over state Sen. Isadore Hall. Other open seats were filled by Lou Correa (D) in the Anaheim area and Jimmy Panetta (D) in Monterey.

In the Assembly, three Democrats are reclaiming their seats: in Manhattan Beach, former Asm. (D) leads over Asm. David Hadley (R), in Fullerton former Asm. Sharon Quirk- Silva (D) leads over Asm. (R) and in northeast San Fernando Valley former Asm. and a founding board member of Pacoima Development FCU Raul Bocanegra (D) regained his seat from Asm. Patty Lopez (D).

And on the Republican side, incumbent Asm. (R) trails district director Sabrina Cervantez (D) in the Riverside county district.

Additionally, California passed Proposition 64 approving recreational marijuana use.
