STEVE MAGNESS ASSISTANT COACH First Season at Houston COAC H IN G STAFF Houston, 2008

Steve Magness joined the University of Houston cross country and track and field programs as an assistant coach with his hiring in August 2012.

Magness joins the Cougars after spending a year and a half at the Nike Oregon Project. In his role, he served as a coach to several athletes and was in charge of implementing scientific testing and monitoring prac- tices for the team, including Lactate Testing, VO2/Running Economy, and Biomechanics testing.

Prior to working at the Project, Magness was the volunteer assistant cross country and track and field coach (2005-10) at his alma mater, Klein Oak High School, in Spring, Texas. There, he coached multiple state, regional, and national qualifiers.

Magness competed his freshman through junior years at Rice Univer- sity, where he was the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2003. As a senior in 2007-08, Magness ran for the Cougars and finished in the Top 10 at the Conference USA Championships and was 11th at the NCAA South Central Regionals. For those efforts, he was named to the C-USA Academic All-Conference and the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic teams.

As a prep, Magness ran under Gerald Stewart, where he won the State Championship in the 1600M and set a state record (4:01.02) in the event. He also ran the fastest high school mile time in the nation in 2003.

Magness holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Houston in 2008 and a master’s in exercise, fitness, and health promotions from George Mason University in 2010.
