WThe King, Carson, Pavese, Langford and Funck families were only a few who lived on the block in the mid- 19-teens. Kentucky natives Col. William M. and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Caswell were among the residents. Their house, pictured circa 1915, was located on the east side of Jackson where today’s Main Street ends. It has an inviting look, despite the lack of foliage: a pretty white fence, big porch with a rocking chair and pot plant, and fluttering curtains in the upstairs window. Note the newspaper lying on the porch bench as if a reader will return momentarily. The Caswell’s apparently first boarded in that house with widow Bessie (Mrs. LG) Thorp and her two children before buying it in December 1910 for $650. It was one of many properties and land tracts they would buy and sell in the county. Thorp, who originally owned much of the land in the neighborhood, then began operating her Thorp House boardinghouse on Lee Street. Little is known about the Caswells, who seem to have left by around 1920. However, William Caswell was an early member of the Fort Myers Board of Trade, formed in 1903, and that indicates a strong interest in the community Today, the Foxworthy Building occupies the former Caswell site photo by Gerri Reaves and the city’s development. That booster organization formed with the main As the 1920s approached, family homes like the Caswell’s gradually yielded to purpose of bringing the railroad to Fort Myers. commercial enterprises on that block. The commercialization had begun in the early 19-teens, with the establishment of the highly successful Ben King’s Garage, which stood just north of today’s inter- section of Jackson and Main. But the most momentous change came late in 1920, when Peter Tonnelier extended Main, then called Oak Street, through to Jackson. He then commenced the construction of the Central Hotel, complete with individual storefronts on the ground floor. Today, a city parking garage stands where the hotel once did. Circa 1940, Boyd Clifton “BC” Foxworthy built Foxworthy Furniture on part of the footprint of the Caswell house. The Foxworthy Building, as it is now called, is an office building. Today, only the Pavese house – just south of where the Caswell’s lived – reminds us of the block’s residential history. That historic home is now a law firm. Walk down to the Jackson Street and imagine a quieter era before commerce (aka progress) displaced family homes. If you want to know more about local history, you have places to visit. Let’s be honest, I enjoyed the entire show. It pays tribute to Elvis, Janis, The Beattles, Woodstock and every other important performer of the Lane At Broadway Palm day. Much to my delight, Jayar Garcia stepped in to sing La Bamba. I remember when he had the lead in the musical of the same name years ago. Jayar, you still have it. Over 50 songs are performed either as solos or musical medleys. The show was created, directed and choreographed by Victor Legarreta, a Southwest Florida favorite and definitely one of mine. These young kids captured the enthusiasm and joy of the Rockin’ ‘50s and the Groovin’ ‘60s. At the start of the show, one performer asked how many of us in the audience remembered the music from these eras and most hands went up. He then said, “None of us do.” Ah, to be so young again. There was some audience participation during the show, which always adds a fun touch. Keep your eye on the slide panels on both sides of the stage. They also add some nostalgia and humor to the evening. The main cast is Ilana Gabrielle, Rachael Haber, Keith McCoy, Jesse Michels, Housso Semon and Scott James Smith. The night I saw the show, Christopher Violett stepped in for Jesse Michels. Whether with an understudy or not, the cast sings and dances their hearts out, giving everyone an evening to remember. One local car dealer will be pleased with the bit where Smith comes on stage as Elvis and asks the way to a certain dealership. Let’s just say, it was huge and left the audience chuckling. SoCo Second Saturday and the SoCo Cultural District is the brainchild of visual artist and gallery owner David Acevedo, who also co-founded the Fort Myers Art Walk. With support from other leaders in the community, such as Lydia Black from the Alliance for the Arts, Chip and Anna Withrow from Yoga Bird, David Gittleman from Gittleman Studios, Jeffrey Scott Lewis from the Union Artist Studios, Melissa Vogt and Will Prather from the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and massage therapist Frank Jean, a committee was founded and plans were put in place for the establishment of the event. “The potential for this area (of the SoCo Cultural District) to grow into the new arts and culture district of Fort Myers is evident to me,” said Acevedo, who opened DAAS Co-op Art Gallery & Gifts earlier this year. “Having the Alliance, the Broadway Palm and so many other important artistic venues nearby, it was only logical to come up with a way to unite and conquer.” Parking is available in the Royal Palm Square and at the Alliance for the Arts campus. The plant lacks true leaves and roots, but scale-like appendages and bead-like sporangia are visible on the stems Appendages that are scale- or thorn-like rudimentary leaves called microphylls occur in the stem angles. The three-lobed sporangia, which superficially resemble tiny berries or beads, turn yellow when mature, and then split open to release spores. The unassuming whisk-fern is not parasitic and is environmentally beneficial. Specimens growing in soil aid in preventing erosion, and epiphytic ones collect debris that transforms into soil.
