Still and Silent Places Paintings by J. F. Goff

March 1 – June 1, 2014 Reception: Saturday, March 1, 5:00-7:00 pm

Jim Goff (1920-2007) was one of the area’s most beloved art instructors. Though he did not begin painting seriously until the 1960s, he quickly became one of the most respected and sought after artists in the region. Best known for his landscapes, Goff based most of his art on the environment in and around Sioux City, developing a style that represented perfectly the sense of quiet and solitude that is still found in rural Siouxland. The Art Center is working with many of the dozens of private collectors of his watercolors in the Siouxland area to bring together the best examples of these works.

Goff was born in Two Harbors, Minnesota, and moved with his family to Sioux City as a child. After graduating from East High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, remaining until the end of World War II. Then he returned to Sioux City, where he received a degree from Morningside College in 1950. He then received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Drake University in 1957. For 29 years he taught art at East High School, while also teaching classes at the Sioux City Art Center and Western Iowa Tech Community College.

This exhibition is underwritten in part by the Aalfs Family Foundation. CURRENT EXHIBITIONS An Impressive Collection A Half-Century of Prints

Quilt Art International Expressions

November 23, 2013 – February 16, 2014

This exhibition features a large variety of contemporary quilts by the members of Quilt Art, an international group of quilt-making artists. This exhibition includes the work of artists from eight different European countries and the United States. Many Quilt Art members formally trained in other fields, but found satisfaction and self-expression in the tactile process of patterning, sewing, layering, and joining fabric. Each member of the group approaches her work differently, resulting in a varied and thought-provoking collection of quilts. Some deal with modern social issues. Others draw inspiration from landscape and place. Of the more abstract quilts, some emphasize color and form while others attend to texture and stitching. A number of the quilts are hand-painted, dyed, or printed. Their materials range from fine silks to old linen found in the street. Whether pieced together abstractly by hand, or stitched carefully by machine, one thing these artists and their textiles have in common is their ability to enthusiastically introduce

audiences to the little-known yet captivating world of art quilts. Jette Clover (United States), Urban Symphony, 2006, cotton, cheesecloth, and linen Courtesy of the artist Quilt Art: International Expressions was organized by International Technique: Painting, discharge, screen printing, rusting process, collage, hand and machine quilting Arts & Artists, Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Quilt Art.

So I switched all my banking to Security.

I found out Security makes all its decisions locally. I thought it would be a big pain, but Security made it simple.

What are you waiting for?

I got tired of the lack of service my “big bank” was giving me. So I switched to Security.
