INTRODUCTION

Indonesia is a wonderful country for any traveler, therefore also for travelers with disabilities. As this specific group requires a great attention to detail and elaborate planning, this information document aims at providing tour operators and interested parties realistic information related to traveling with disabilities in Indonesia. The document focusses on Bali, as in our opinion, this is the most suitable destination within Indonesia, that offers the most facilities, and least limitations for travelers. In the document, we will introduce the island, the reasons why it is suitable, suitable destinations on the islands, and various tours to enjoy! Furthermore, some example tours are presented, as inspiration. But, no worries! Our tailor- made department would be delighted to design a custom tour for you.

WHY BALI?

Bali, an island and province of Indonesia. The province includes the island of Bali and a few smaller neighboring islands, notably Nusa Penida (Nusa Gede), Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Sandy beaches, ancient temples, active volcanoes and spiritual retreats, this small island has it all. The Bali experience is something that can’t be explained, it’s a cultural and spiritual journey that needs to be experienced in order to be understood.

Bali’s name is a testament to its diverse and rich culture. From jungles to rice fields, to sandy beaches and roaring nightlife, to temples galore, everything you’re looking for when you travel, you can be sure you will find it here. And besides all this, Bali suits any budget! Good food has no end in Bali. Fresh seafood, fiery spices, organic vegetables and tropical fruits imported from all over the world.

Bali is a great choice for most of the people who decide to spend their vacation in an exotic place usually do that to relax and refill their energy supply and, undoubtedly.

In general, Indonesia is a challenging destination to provide suitable services for disabled people. However, in Indonesia, the island of Bali, next to being the most popular. Is also the most suitable in terms of these specialized services? There is a large variety of attractions, accommodations and transportation available which is (semi) suitable for disabled people. For example, the resort towns on Sanur and Nusa Dua offer paved beachside footpaths, ideal for a stroll. To clarify the pros and cons please see a brief overview below:

Cons - A completely independent trip, without helpers is not possible - Sometimes uneven footpaths

ACCOMODATION

To commence the more detailed section of this document, we commence with the identification of various accommodations in four of Bali’s most popular destinations: Sanur, Ubud, Nusa Dua and Lovina

Sanur

In Sanur there are different options to stay for disabled, Villa G at Ellora is a special villa (for 6 people) with the best facilities. Gardenia Boutique is a really nice Guest House, where also other people stay. There are really friendly staff and there is also a nice café/lunchroom with good prices. These two options are the best options for disabled.

Villa G at Ellora Sanur

Villa G at Ellora is perfect for disabled, there is enough space for the wheelchair and they have a lot of facilities. There is a chair available who brings you to the swimming pool. This villa is the best option for disabled.

 The villa includes 3 rooms with a double bed.  Available for 6 persons.

In high season, it is only possible to book the whole villa. In low season, it is also possible to book only a room. Villa G at Ellora is really nice for families or group friends.

Gardenia Boutique Guest House Sanur

With the white-washed buildings & meandering paths, Gardenia Boutique Guesthouse is truly a unique accommodation experience.

Gardenia is just 500 meters from beautiful Sanur Beach and a short stroll to all the wonderful shopping & restaurants the area has to offer. The room is big, the bathroom has grab rails and it is possible to use the pool. Everything is on one floor or there are ramps.

 2 rooms are modified for disabled.

Mercure Resort Sanur Located only 20 minutes away from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Mercure Resort Bali Sanur lies in the East of the city Denpasar – at the calm and relaxed environment of Sanur beach, where centuries of Balinese art and cultural history have been nurtured. Mercure Resort Sanur has 2 superior rooms which is adjusted for disabled, but no modification pool for disabled. However, as it is limited room, Hotel does not show the modification room in public nor website.

Inna Grand Bali Beach Located in 29 hectares at the seaside of every occasion, all accommodations are directly located and accessed to the sunrise beach where the traditional are within the reach 24-hours service and hospitality is provided for your stay. This hotel has 4 rooms with handrails in the bathroom which usually requested by older guest or disabled.

Ubud

Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. There are some options to stay in Ubud for disabled, such as Maya Ubud Resort and Spa , Ubud Inn , and Ubud Wana Resort.

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa A 5 star luxury resort sits between the Petanu River valley and the verdant rice fields of Ubud. Maya Ubud Resort & Spa is close to the famous streets of Ubud but it feels remote of the crowd. With views of the river valley and rice terraces, you are totally in the nature. There is a special paved path way, a room and villa for disabled. The villa has his own swimming pool, with stairs, but without grab rails. Maya Ubud Resort & Spa villa has outside shower.  One villa is possible for disabled people.

Ubud Inn Ubud Inn is a quiet garden hotel close to the crowded street Monkey forest. Ubud Inn is just 500 meters from Monkey Forest and a short stroll to all the wonderful shopping & restaurants the area has to offer. Everything is on one floor or there are ramps.

Ubud Wana Resort Ubud Wana Resort is a hidden resort for peace conscious travelers to unwind and relax in serenity of Nyuh Kuning. There is 1 room modified for disabled, it is located in the ground floor with direct access to swimming pool. There are stairs in Lobby, but another access to go to the rooms is also available for wheel chair.

 1 room is modified for disabled.

Nusa Dua Nusa Dua, was designed to be an ‘all-inclusive’ type of tourist destination. The Indonesian Tourism Development Centre or ITDC (formerly Bali Tourism Development Centre / BTDC) is a main enclave of world-class hotels, complete with an upmarket shopping complex with well- maintained facilities, and with a luxurious 18-hole golf course, white-golden sandy beaches and many other nearby highlights. It offers some hotels that can accommodate disabled to stay.

Nusa Dua Beach Hotel Nusa Dua Beach hotel is the oldest in Nusa Dua. They have a Balinese style set in lush tropical gardens, where you can walk along the whole hotel. They have a walk-in swimming pool, but no grab rails. The Hotel has all the facilities you need. You can enjoy the whole day without leaving the hotel.  9 hectares  382 rooms  2 rooms modified for disabled

Lovina Lovina is a quiet coastal town on the North Bali coastline west of the city of Singaraja which has black sand beaches. Dolphin watching, snorkeling, and fishing are the main activities, but perhaps above all else, this is an area in which to relax and take in a very slow, traditional pace of life. Lovina is ideal for family groups with young children or older adventurers who want to kick back and quickly become part of the community. Activities

Day activities We have selected a variety of activities we believe to be suitable for travelers with disabilities. Please do note, that not all places have ramps, but staff is there to assist when necessary

Bali Bird Park Devoted not only to birds The Bali Bird Park is also a botanical oasis and a paradise for anyone who loves gardens. The Bird Park has a feeling of a tropical forest with windy paths, fringed with bright exotic blossoms weave around lakes and ponds to form endless vitas. Most of the Park is accessible to wheelchairs. Be sure to ask any of the staff for help if you need assistance. You can walk in the park, but there are also shows/events: Every event can be visit for the disabled tour. Bali Bird Park has a restaurant witch view over the park. The first activity begins at 9:30 and the program is the whole day. The last activity is at 17:00. The Bali Bird Park will take half day, you can go in the morning or in the afternoon. Limitations: there are no ramps yet with the 4D cinema, you need help to come downstairs. Travel Time: Approximately 1.5 hours driving from Sanur

Ubud

Monkey Forest Monkey Forest is a nature reserve and Hindu temple complex in Ubud. Via Jalan Hanoman is a wheelchair possible entrance. Limitations: not everything is possible with a wheelchair, but enough to enjoy of the impression. Day Tour : Approximately half day

Bedugul Lakes To reach the mountain range and Bedugul, you drive west from Denpasar through Mengwi. As you leave the southern plains, the landscape changes from flowing tiers of rice to motley patches of onion, cabbage and papaya grown in the cool climate of the highlands. Ulundanu Is a Balinese Hindu Temple located at Candi Kuning countryside. It is situated in the plateau area with cool atmosphere surround it and hills as a backdrop.

Day Tour : approximately 8 hours

Tegalalang Rice Terraces & Kintamani Volcano An accessible day tour to Lake Batur & Kintamani volcano (still active!) After visiting Tegagalang Rice Terraces on the way there we take lunch in an accessible restaurant with panoramic views of Mount Kintamani. We take a leisurely drive back visiting Blantih village, a traditional coffee making area and Tampaksiring. If you would like to see something special – why not visit the Senang Hati Foundation and meet the local disabled community. Limitations: you can only enjoy the view, not walking between the fields.

Day Tour : approximately 8 hours

Jatiluwih Discover Breathtaking Panorama of Jatiluwih, it is a breathtaking panorama of fertile rice terrace’s that stretch from the foothills of Batukaru volcano to the south coast. It is located at the western district of Tabanan at a height of height of 800 meters above sea level. Limitations: you can only enjoy the view, not walking between the fields.

Tanah Lot Visit Tanah Lot Temple the most popular tourist destinations in Bali with famous breathtaking view of sunset view with Tanah Lot Temple as a background. It is the famous half day Tanah Lot tour to explore the beauty tourist destination in Bali islands with breathtaking nature panorama view and spectacular temple.

Munduk Wilderness Buggy ride This self-drive buggy ride is via mostly in the dirt roads through hill terrains, local plantations and villages. The drive also includes fun driving at our special buggy circuit. Limitations: there are non-adjusted car. So people should help lift the disabled in the car. The car makes rough movements up and down, so it's not easy to sit in the car.

Dolphin spotting Lovina Enjoy a trip on a traditional outrigger boat on the Bali Sea. Watch pods of dolphins frolic and if you are lucky you might even see whales or a turtle.

Limitations: there are non-adjusted boats. So people should help lift the disabled in the boat.

Cooking class in Ubud Beginning with a visit the farm fields and spice garden accompanied by our restaurant staff explaining the main ingredients used in the Balinese cuisine, then joining the fun and ritual of preparing a typical Balinese meal in our traditional Balinese kitchen style, learn various techniques and get to know traditional cooking equipment. The myriad of exotic scents and flavors will prepare your taste buds for a truly sumptuous experience: a traditional Balinese meal, prepared by yourself in an enchanting Balinese setting followed by Lunch.

Arts and Crafts classes in Ubud Silver Jewellery Class Silver is a valuable earth mineral. It can be manipulated using heat and jeweler’s tools. You will create your own piece of jewelry for your own individual use or to present as a gift to a loved one. Included in this 3 hour workshop is 5 grams of silver, which is normally enough to craft a pendant or ring.

Bamboo Carving Class Spend a few hours with our master carvers crafting wonderful bamboo objects- like dragonflies that float on a pinpoint. The carved forms are simple Take a half day and challenge yourself to carve your own bamboo art work. You can give it a final touch when you return home, as painting or gloss.

Fruit Carving & Decoration Class Fruit carving is a delightful way to make food into art, or to make fun art that tastes good. It’s all about letting go of your inhibitions and using fruit as your medium for artistic expression. Children and adults can enjoy two hours of discovery while our teacher guides the students through the process of crafting foods like melons and carrots into flowers and insects. This class gives new meaning to the phrase “making dessert”

Lontar Weaving Class Weaving natural fibers into usable forms is one of mankind's oldest skills. On Bali, the availability of bamboo and palm has enabled the island's Hindu culture to create daily offerings to their deities and ancestors. Weaving natural fibers into offering baskets, food containers, purses, and art is the Balinese daily activity. You will learn to make a small basket from lontar palm or bamboo on this 2-hour class.

Walk past Sanur/ Nusa Dua beach Take a walk along the beach of Sanur or Nusa Dua, both have a paved pathway between the beach and the resorts.

Devdan show 4 days a week there is a nice Theatre show in Bali, showing the treasure of the Indonesian Archipelago. The show is named DEVDAN, derived from the Sanskrit words 'Deva' and 'Dhana', meaning "God's Grace". The show takes 1,5 hour. It is a lively show with dance, acrobatic acts and magician combined. The diversity of the cultures on the main Indonesian islands is shown by dance performances from Bali, Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Papua. It is an attractive show for children as well. A couple of scenes in the 90-minute performance even involve the audience, and especially the children, to interact with some of the stage characters and dance along. The show is held at an air-conditioned theatre. The seating has a choice of prime view where you sit mid front close to the stage / good view which is mid front further away from the stage or Wing view which is seated on left or right wing. Limitations: the Devdan show is performing only 4 days a week.

Bali Safari and Marine Park

Bali Safari and Marine Park, or Taman Safari III is a branch of Taman Safari located in Gianyar, Bali. Other than the name suggests, it is not a real Safari, but an open Zoo with imported animals from different Continental. A whole day to Bali Safari and Marine Park, includes: Animal Education & Elephant Educational Show Safari Journey 1 Time Fun Zone Star Ride 1 Time Fun Zone Fun Ride 1 Time Water Park 1 Time Bali Agung Performance Silver Seat

Limitations: No possibility in the waterslide. Need help to get in the Fun Zone car.

Stops along the way A great way to see Bali is to visit highlights when moving from one destination to another, here we will discuss some highlights which we believe suitable for travelers with disabilities. For example tours, see further on in this document.

On the way to Lovina Ulundanu Temple

Ulun Is a Balinese Hindu Temple located at Candi Kuning countryside. The distance from Denpasar town is about 50 km north side the way from Denpasar to Singaraja. It is set at lakeside of Beratan with beautiful lake view and hills surround it. It is situated in the plateau area with cool atmosphere surround it and hills as a backdrop

Jatiluwih rice terrace

Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is a name of country side located in the plateau area with the mountain as a backdrop. Jatiluwih owns very beautiful panorama of rice terrace unfolding from the foot of mountain to the sea. The cool atmospheres surround the area of Jatiluwih with the good water irrigation that makes this countryside as ideal for agriculture development. The local paddies are planted in this place look typically of the high relative size plant if it is compared with other pre-eminent paddy planted by most farmers in Bali Limitations: you can only enjoy the view, not walking between the fields.

Kintamani

Kintamani is a name of countryside located in the hill and the beautiful panorama surround it. We can see beautiful panorama from Kintamani to overview the active volcano of Mt. Batur and wide Lake of Batur in a valley. It is situated in the plateau area with cool weather surround it Limitations: you can only enjoy the view, not walking to the top.

Botanical Garden

Bali Botanic Gardens provides a great escape to enjoy the cool central Bali upland, popular among locals and visitors who love the highlands and scenery, together with the rare tropical flowering plants and specimens in its vast collection.

Accessible transport with hydraulic lift can comfortably seat 4 persons with any combination of wheelchairs & seats - max 5 depending on wheelchair sizes. Complete with Driver / Assistant / Wheelchair Seatbelts & Tie Downs / Portable Ramps.
