O sweet mother Mary, who knew the sadness of mourning those your heart loved most, Jesus, your Son, and Joseph, your devoted spouse, pray for us in our time of loss. Amen. BISHOP JOHN BARRES CELEBRATES MASS FOR DEANERY 4 A Personal Perspective from a Parishioner in Pew … On Friday, February 25 at 5:30PM priests and parishioners of the 10 parishes in Deanery 4 participated in a special Mass to welcome and meet Bishop John O. Barres, the fifth bishop of Diocese of Rockville Centre at Our Lady of Victory R.C. Church in Floral Park.
People were buzzing with anticipation of his arrival and possibly to greet him personally. Rev. Thomas Fusco, Pastor of Our Lady of Victory and Dean of the Fourth Deanery welcomed the faithful of Deanery 4— Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Boniface, Elmont; Saint Hedwig and Our Lady of Victory, Floral Park; Saint Catherine of Sienna, Franklin Square; Saint Anne, Garden City; Our Lady of Peace, Lynbrook; Our Lady of Lourdes, Malverne; Holy Name of Mary and Blessed Sacrament, Valley Stream. Two people from each parish were recruited for Offertory Procession. Fr. Fusco shared that the bishops and priests would be leaving immediately after Mass to have dinner together at Saint Hedwig’s; and most of us thought that was a signal there would not be any time to meet the Bishop … we thought! Many arrived very early and those that did had a special experience because shortly after 5pm Bishop Barres came out to say hello and welcomed everyone. Those present broke out in applause and suddenly he walked down the aisle stopping at every pew, shook hands with many and expressed his thanks to us for coming. It was a wonderful gesture and as a person in the pew it was very heartwarming. Bishop Barres greeted us with a smile; he is so very personable. Saint Catherine of Sienna Parish and Saint Vincent de Paul parishioners were well represented.
Also in attendance were our Associate Pastors, Fr. Johnny and Fr. Allan, who concelebrated the Mass along with many of our neighboring parish priests. In addition, Bishop Andrzej (Vicar of Western Vicariate which in- cludes Deanery 4) and Bishop Eusebius (Syro-Malankara Rite Bishop of N.A.) concelebrated, too. And to our surprise our own Louis Cona, currently studying for the priesthood, was on the altar too. The Cantor with choirs of Our Lady of Victory and Saint Anne and youngsters from OLV’s new Hand Bell Choir led us in song. Everyone raised their voices with joy throughout Mass. From the very beginning and during the entire Mass there was a true spirit of community.
Bishop Barres spoke eloquently in his homily. He focused on community and the many relationships one expe- riences, friendship and marriage; emphasizing the bonds created between people and the good that comes from sharing with one another. He asked us to reach out to those inactive Catholics who may not be attending Mass or spiritual events and invite them to join us at a Mass, a prayer service or something happening at our parish. He originally made the request at his installation with a deadline date of March 1st. However, in his travels within our diocese to meet everyone he now has extended the time period through Easter. Imagine how packed our churches would be if each family brought one person?
To see Seminarian Louis Cona serve with such grace and witness pa- rishioners bring the gifts up at the Offertory Procession was a special moment, too. The hymn One Bread, One Body meant more that evening than usual; one felt it within your heart.
After the Final Blessing, Fr. Thomas Fusco came forward on behalf of all the parishioners of Deanery 4, those present and those not, and wel- comed Bishop Barres. He also spoke on behalf of all the priests present and those not able to be there saying while some were nervous with anticipation of a new bishop, admitting he was one of them, the Lord has blessed us all with him! He then gave a commitment on behalf of all the priests in Deanery 4 of their obedience, support and continued good works of our Catholic Church. And finally he thanked Bishop Barres again for his visit to our Deanery and presiding at this celebration of the Eucharist.
The entire Church had voices raised together in joyful song for the Re- cessional hymn. And then my heart was touched as Bishop Barres, after waiting for all to proceed before him finally stepped down out of the sanctuary into the aisle, and without pause everyone broke into great applause as we welcomed Bishop Barres to our Church here on Long Island! However, in a certain sense, he does not have to say anything; his actions this week speak more loudly than any word he might have spoken.
