ANTHEM NOTES from Stephen Smith: Where do I even begin when Lord, I’m Coming Home discussing today’s anthem, “Lord, I’m Coming Home”? While it sounds pretty Words by William J. Kirpatrick, 1892 basic, it’s a piece complied from many different sources. Let’s start with the text. Music Incorporating O Waly, Waly (traditional) The text was written in 1892 by William J. Kirkpatrick (1838-1921). A musician And Largo, by Antonin Dvorak, 1893 in the Methodist Episcopal Church, Kirkpatrick was schooled as both a carpenter Arranged by Anna Laura Page and Jean Anne Shafferman and a musician. He worked in both professions until the death of his first wife in 1855. After her death, he devoted himself to church music, composing over 100 I've wandered far away from God; the paths of sin too long I’ve trod. works. I’ve wasted many precious years. Now I repent with bitter tears.

As for the music, the anthem quotes two familiar melodies. The first is O Waly Coming home, coming home, never more to roam. Waly, an English folk tune dating back to the mid 1700’s. (The tune appears in Coming home, coming home, Lord, I’m coming home. our hymnal as #693, Though I May Speak.) The second is a portion of Dvorak’s I’m tired of sing and straying, Lord; I’ll trust Your love believe Your word. Largo from the New World Symphony. Many know this movement by the title My soul is sick, my heart is sore; my strength renew, my hope restore. “Goin’ Home.” My only hope, my only plea, is that my Savior died for me. That takes us to current-day arrangers Anna Laura Page (b. 1943) and Jean Anne Lord, wash me whiter than the snow; I need Your cleansing blood I know. Shafferman (b. 1953). They were able to adapt and arrange all of these elements Coming home, coming home, never more to roam. into an anthem that speaks of our need and desire to come home to God. Coming home, coming home, Lord, I’m coming home.

Lord, I’m coming home.
