SPEAKER BIOS | IN SPEAKING ORDER David Leslie Country Head of Global Trade & Receivables Finance, Mexico HSBC David Leslie is an International Manager with HSBC who has worked over 10 years in Senior Positions in Asia, Europe and North America. He is originally from Vancouver Canada and holds Masters of Business Administration Degrees from INSEAD (France) & Tsinghua Universities (Beijing, China). David has recently been appointed Country Head of Global Trade and Receivables Finance in HSBC Mexico where he will look to invest significantly in the business to meet the growing Trade, Supply Chain, Factoring and Guarantees needs of HSBC´s diverse client base. David brings to the role his international experience in Wholesale banking including Trade & Receivables Finance, Product Management, Development of Academic Trade Finance programs, Operations, Risk Management, and Big Data Technology in Financial Crime Risk Management for International Trade. Prior to HSBC, David worked 10 years in Sales & Marketing in consumer goods as well as in the manufacturing sector in the Canadian forest industry. Now established in Mexico, David will join the International Chamber of Commerce as a Vice-President of the Banking Commission. Arnoldo López Marmolejo Chief Economist, Macroeconomic Analysis BBVA Arnoldo López is Principal Economist responsible for the macroeconomic analysis unit at BBVA Bancomer. Before joining BBVA Bancomer, Arnoldo was Financial Specialist at the Financial Stability Department in the Central Bank of México (Banxico), and visiting economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He has been professor at Autonomous University of Barcelona, and has given lectures in academic conferences and central banks such as the Bank of England, Bank of France, Bank of Italy, Bank of Mexico, University of Barcelona, and University of Minnesota, among others. He obtained a bachelor degree in Economics at ITESM-Monterrey, a bachelor degree in Law at ITESM- TecMilenio, and a Master and PhD in Economics at Autonomous University of Barcelona. He has also been visiting researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, and Minnesota. He is author of several economic and financial papers published by the Bank of Italy, the IMF, Review of International Economics, El Trimestre Económico, among others. He has cursed postgraduate studies in Darden Business School (UVa) and the School of Accounting and Administration, UNAM. He has vast experience in different industries and has focused on Strategic Planning and Business Development. From 2000, he has worked for important Groups as Telmex, Controladora Comercial Mexicana and HSBC. In April 2014, he joined BBVA Bancomer as Head of the Energy Sector. Jeremy Martin Director, Energy Institute of Americas Jeremy Martin is the director of the Energy Program at the Institute of the Americas, an inter-American public policy think tank located at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The Institute of the Americas Energy Program works to foster a deeper understanding of the most critical energy issues facing the Western Hemisphere. Jeremy spends his time delving into the geopolitics of energy and closely following energy industry trends and policy issues across the Americas, and is a frequent commentator and writer on Latin American and energy issues. Jeremy has testified before the US Congress on energy issues in Latin America and also serves as Curator of the energy section of the US-Mexico Network, an online forum hosted by the University of Southern California (USC). Thanks to his upbringing, he is a diehard Red Sox fan, Civil War buff, and news junkie. Jeremy graduated with honors in History from The Citadel in Charleston, SC and a Masters in International Affairs/International Development from the American University in Washington, DC. John led IPD’s expansion into Mexico in 2001. He has since played a vital role in the development of lobbying efforts to encourage a healthy, more vigorous Mexican energy sector. With 15 years of direct consulting experience in Mexico, John is one of the premier experts on the politics and policy of that country’s energy industry. In 2011, he relocated to Bogota in order to participate more directly in the resurgence of Colombia’s oil and gas sectors. John co-heads IPD’s business throughout Latin America, contributing a strong, pragmatic, and tactical angle to aid clients in their risk and opportunity assessment. He has devised comprehensive government relations, key stakeholder management, and non-technical risk assessments to enhance clients’ ability to navigate Latin America’s complex business environments. He also spearheads the company’s due diligence and valuation efforts, as well as its opportunity and partner identification efforts. John is regularly quoted in the U.S. and international press, and speaks regularly at industry conferences and events. Prior to joining IPD, John held positions within Dresdner Kleinwort Benson’s Energy, Utility and Infrastructure Group, focusing on large domestic and international projects in Latin America and Asia. He also held positions with the project finance group at Banque Paribas and the transportation group at Manufacturers Hanover (now JP Morgan Chase). Melodie Michel Deputy Editor Global Trade Review (GTR) Melodie Michel is the deputy editor of GTR magazine, the world's leading international trade finance magazine. She has extensive business journalism experience, covering GTR conferences as well as events organised by other industry bodies around the world. In her role, she regularly organises and chairs roundtables attended by senior trade finance representatives. Having graduated in France, her home country, Melodie joined GTR in 2012 as a reporter, and returned to the company in 2014 after a year spent freelancing. Luis de la Calle Director General & Founding Partner de la Calle, de la Calle, Madrazo, Mancera, S. C (CMM) Luis de la Calle is managing director and founding partner of De la Calle, Madrazo, Mancera, S.C. (CMM), a consulting firm specialized in economy, regulatory processes, and matters related to international trade. He also serves as President of Latin America for Hill + Knowlton Strategies. He served as Undersecretary of International Business Negotiations at the Ministry of Economy in Mexico. During his administration he headed Mexico’s negotiations for bilateral trade agreements and regional multilateral negotiations in the World Trade Organization. Luis de la Calle also served as Minister of Trade Issues at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., a position from which he participated actively in the design, promotion, and implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA. De la Calle worked at the World Bank as a country economist for the Czech and Slovak Republics, Poland, and the former Zaire. De la calle obtained his degree in Economy from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de México, ITAM, Luis de la Calle completed his master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Virginia. Doctor de la Calle has extensive teaching experience and is constantly present in the media through his biweekly column “Que mas?” published in El Universal newspaper, in addition to various collaborations and interviews. He is the co-author, along with Luis Rubio, of Clasemediero pobre no más, desarrollado aun no, a book that describes the middleclass in Mexico and its consolidation as an engine of development and political stability in the country. John Raines Deputy Head of Political Risk IHS John Raines currently serves as the Deputy Head of Political Risk with IHS, a global intelligence firm based in London. Prior to coming to IHS, he served as Deputy Manager of Political Risk with Exclusive Analysis for three years and conducted ongoing analysis of US and Canadian foreign and domestic policy. He has previous work experience with the US Department of State, where he held jobs responsible for conducting economic policy for the US Embassy in Panama and overseeing the American Citizen Services Unit in Hong Kong. He also worked at the World Bank, where he managed several projects in the production of the World Development Indicators (WDI). Other employment includes stints as a Presidential Management Fellowship with the US Treasury Department. John has master's degrees in international relations and political science from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and Ohio State University respectively, where he has taught courses and given lectures on US foreign policy.
