FIRE DANGER: BEWARE OF HAZARDOUS WASTE A reminder that batteries, gas bottles and electrical items do not belong in your domestic waste bins or regular clean up collection. Disposing of these items in this way is unsafe and could cause harm to garbage truck operators, as well as members of the public. Sutherland Shire has recently experienced an increase in incorrect disposal of batteries, items containing batteries, electronic items and gas bottles, which have caused serious and threatening incidents, including garbage truck fires. Make sure to take ‘problem waste’ items to one of Council’s waste collections events, such as our chemical cleanouts and e-Waste collection events. Other goods, such as batteries, can be disposed of at a number of Council facilities including with us to check about other safe waste disposal battery collection boxes at Council’s libraries and alternatives by calling our Customer Services on Administration Building. This initiative is part of Sutherland Shire Council’s commitment to diverting waste from landfill and supporting residents to reuse and reduce waste at home. WOODCHIPPING – UPCOMING DATES Council offers a domestic woodchipping service for Sutherland Shire residents during daylight saving months each year. This service turns bulky tree cuttings (larger than one metre in length and no larger than 200 mm in diameter) into woodchips. You must be a resident and produce proof of identification on the day. This service is not available for use by commercial operators or commercial vehicles; only cars, cars with trailers and utilities will be admitted to the site. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS In celebration of International Day of Older Persons, Sutherland Shire Council treated local senior residents to a free film viewing of the newly released ‘Love Sarah’, at Event Cinemas Miranda on 1 October 2020. Attendees were greeted with complimentary popcorn and refreshments and invited to sit back, relax and enjoy the film. The occasion provided a chance to celebrate and recognise our local seniors for the many wonderful contributions they make to the community. Sutherland Shire Council hosts a number of events and programs each year that are dedicated to our caring and supportive senior community and continues to identify new ways to reach seniors and enhance their wellbeing.
